To prevent any possible injury to the spring which would result from rotation of the piston by the piston rod, the latter is attached to the former by a swivel Connection, herein conveniently made by providing the boss 2O with a cylindrical'bore 27, which loosely receives a head 28 presented by the lower end of the piston rod. Afterthe head has been inserted, the upper end of the boss is flanged inwardly, asat 29, about aneck 30 presented by the piston rod. If, now, the user should rotate the piston-rod, the piston is not thereby rotated, and no injury to the spring can result.

In Fig. 2, there is s hown a portion of an engine comprising a cylinder 3l, having' a piston 32 working therein, and connected to a crank-pin 33 by a connecting rod 34 anda wrist-pin 35. To test the engine for possible Y looseness, the suction deviceis appliedtothe upper face of the engine piston in the described manner, andthe cylinder 5 of the suction deviceis then firmly grasped bythe hand or hands of the user.v Byattemptingto jerk the piston up and down, any undue looseness in. the bearings can be felt.instantly,and the necessaryY adjustment ca-nbe made, by. removal orthe lower part of theenglne crank-case.
