UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. HAMMOND, OF BATAVIA, NE\V YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,676, dated June 30, 1857.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. HAMMOND, of Batavia, in thecounty of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a top view of harvester. Fig. 2 isasideelevation of the same. Fig. 3 is afront elevation. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the mechanism for lifting the cutters and the side X of the machine. Fig. 5 is a view showing the attachment of wheel W.
Similar characters of reference denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar combination of devices for the simultaneous turning up of the teeth of the harvester and the elevation of the side of the machine toward the standing grain, the details of construction and operation being as follows:
In the drawings, F is the frame ofv the harvester, suppoited upon wheels W W, the former of which communicates motion to the reciprocating cutters a through cog-wheels b, crank-shaft c, connecting-rod d, and lever e. The wheel W is attached to a journal upon a bar, B, movable about its attachment fto the side X of frame F, this bar having aflange,g, passing under the aforesaid side of the frame.
The fixed cutters h and the guard-teeth t' are secured to a bar, 1, whose extremities are provided with journals held in boxes k k, secured to the front bar, A, of the frame, so that said bar may turn freely and thus regulate-the elevation of the points of the cutters. Upon this bar l is a standard, m, connected by a rod, 42, with the arm 0 of a shaft, 19, hung in rear of the aforesaid front piece of frame, so that the movement of said shaft 19 will regulate the position of the cutter-points.
The shaft 1) is turned by power applied to the arm q, held in position by a pin passing through'said arm into the support 1" of the main wheel W. The opposite extremity of this shaft is provided with an arm, 8, resting upon the flange g of the bar B, mentioned above, so that the turning of shaftp will, by depressing arm a, cause the elevation of the sideX of the frame. The arms 0 and s of the shaft 1) are so situated with relation to each other that the same movement of the said shaft which lifts the front of the cutting apparatus will at the same time elevate the side X of the frame.
The bar a, to which the reciprocating cutters are attached, is connected with the lever e by a pin and slot, so that the machine will operate when the cutters are turned up.
The operation olthe machine is obvious from the above description. For the passage of an obstacle, the turning of shaft 1) by power applied to arm q efieets the simultaneous elevation of the frame and the points of the cutters.
It will be seen from my arrangement that an obstacle may be avoided much easier than by the usual devices for that purpose with much less expenditure of physical exertion on the part of the operator. This is due to the fact that at the same time the front of the frame is raised the points of the fingers and cutters are revolved in an upward and backward direction, thus obviating the necessity for so great an elevation of the frame as would otherwise be required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shaft p, with arms 0,8, and q, relatively attached thereto, as described, in combination with the swinging flanged supporting-bar B, and the journaled cutter and finger-bar 1, connected with arm 0 when said parts are arranged for joint operation, in the manner and for the purposes above described.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY D. HAMMOND.
Witnesses GEO. PATTEN, JOHN S. HOLLINGSHEAD.
