This invention relates to sealing means for coke oven doors, and has for its primary object and purpose to provide means of a simple and inexpensive character for effectively sealing the joint between the oven door and its frame tothereby render the same substantially air tight and prevent the escape of hot air and gases from the oven chamber.
It is one of the important objects of the 10 invention to provide a presser frame carried by or mounted upon the oven door and adapted to cooperate with a continuouspack ing strip to force the same tightly into the joint, my present improvements being particularly. characterized by the fact that the said presser frame may be easily and quickly adjusted both horizontally and vertically relative to the door so as to properly position the same whereby said frame will most effectively compress the packing strip.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved sealing means for coke oven doors, and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawing, wherein I have illustrated one simple and practical embodiment of the invention, and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

' As herein shown, the joint or space inclicated at a between the coke oven door I) and its frame a, is adapted to be sealed and rendered air and gas tight by means of a continuous packing strip d which may-be of any preferred compressible material and of any desired cross sectional shape. This packing strip surrounds the marginal wall of the door and is adapted to be forced into the joint a by a presser frame e which is of angle iron and preferably consists of a plulgalit l of sections connected by the cross ars To the door 5 at vertically spaced points the pairs of angular stirrups g are securely fixed which receive and support the cross bars 7 carrying the frame 6.- As shown in Fig. 4, each of these supporting stirrups q is preferably provided with a vertical slot 72 to receive a suitable clamping screw threaded intothe door 6, thus permitting of the adj ustment of said supporting stirrups whereby the normal position of the frame 6 may be adjusted vertically with respect to the door.
'As seen in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the sec-' tions of the frame 6 are adjustably connected with the ends 0 of the bars 7, said ends of the bars being engaged upon one side of the outwardly projecting flanges i of the frame sections and having spaced elongated openings 7.5 m to receive threaded studs or bolts n fixed in the flanges, said bolts having clamping nuts o'engaged thereon. In this manner, it will be readily seen that the opposed ends of the frame sections can bereadily adjusted as desired upon the ends of the barsf.
In the cross bars 7?, connecting stay irons on opposite sides of the door opening of the oven the vadjustable screws& are threaded and are. adapted to bear at their inner ends against the bars f, whereby said bars togetherwith the frame 6 may be forced inwardly. The laterally projecting flange of said frame bearing against the outer side of the packing'strip cl forces said strip into the joint a and tightlycompresses the same between the converging surfaces of the door 7) and its frame 0. c I
From theforegoingdescription, it will be seen that'the cross bars 7 of the presser frame are freely movable on the angular stirrups g which support said frame so that the frame with the packing strip d may be applied with the door asthelatter is inserted to'itsclosed position. Thereafter, the framele may leeboth horizontally and vertically adjusted independently of the door so as to dispose the laterally projecting flange of said frame in the best position for compressing the packing strip (5. Ihe screws 8 are then adjusted so as to force the frame a inwardly under pressure and thereby compress the packing strip into the joint between the door and its frame. In this manner, it will be apparent that an air and gas tight seal of the oven door may be very quickly produced so as to prevent the possibility of the ingress of cold air into the oven chamber or the egress of hot air or gases therefrom.
lVhile I have herein disclosed one simple and practical embodiment of my present improvements, it will nevertheless, be apparent that the essential features of the invention are susceptible of various structural changes, and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of resorting to all such alterations in the form,

2. The combination with a door frame, of a door fitted therein to provide a circumferential space therearound between the door and the door frame, supports mounted on the door, a pressure frame mounted on said supports for adjustment independently of the door, said space tapering away from said pressure frame, a packing strip adapted to be pressed into the space between the door and the frame tosupport the door out of contact with the frame and prevent the escape of gases through the space, means for adjusting the supports on the door to position the pressure frame'relative to the packing strip, and means for adjusting said pres sure frame horizontally and vertically with respect to the door. 3. The. combination with the walls of a door frame and a door inserted therein, the edges of the door being separated from the "walls of the door frame, stirrup-like vertically adjustable supports seated on the door; cross bars seated in the said stirrup-like supports, with "arms on the cross bars extending into the. space between the door and doorframe; a pressure frame consisting of several sections supported at the ends of the arms;
said space tapering away from the pressure frame; a packing strip disposed in the space between the door and doorframe, said strip being engaged by the pressure frame and adapted to becompressed thereby into the space between the door and doorframe to seal the door therein; and means at the ends of the cross bars for adjusting the sections of the pressure frame relative to each other and to the cross bars. l. The combination with door frame, of a doorloosely tted therein to provide a circumferential space therearound between the door and the door frame, stirrup-like vertically adjustable supports on the door, cross bars in the supports, the ends of said bars projecting into the space between the door and door frame, a plurality of pressure frame sections at the ends of the cross bars, a pack ing strip engaged by said frame sections and adapted to be pressed thereby, into the circumferential space between the door and the frame, and means at the ends of the cross bars for holding the pressure frame sections in adjusted position thereon. 7
5. In coke oven door structures having a door frame and a door having a space, the combination of a door frame, the door having a space between it and the frame, a pressure frame and packing strip in the space between the. door and frame and surrounding the door, said space tapering away from said pressure frame, means connected to the frame and extending across the door, stirrups on the door and holders on the stirrups, carrying the pressure frame and engaging said means.
i 6. The combination as in claim 5, wherein the stirrups are adjustably secured to the door body.

In cokeovendoor structures and in combination, a door frame and a door arranged with a seat therebetween and entirely surrounding the door, sealing means within said seat, stirrups and holding devices, the's'tirsaid pressure frame comprising a'sectional' frame composed of parts connected together for adjustment relatively to each other so thatthey can adapt themselves to different pressures exerted'thereon; 7
9. In coke oven door structuresof-the kind having a door frame and a door-having a space, a door frame, a door therein having a seat in the space between it and the door frame extending entirely around the door, a pressure frame and sealing means in the seat, and entirely surrounding the door, the walls of the seat being tapered and tapering away from the pressure frame, stirrups on the door, and means engaged by the stirrups connected to the pressure frame and extending across the door, said means being arranged to exert pressure upon the pressure frame and cause the surrounding sealing means'in cooperation with the tapering Walls to wedge and thereby support the door out of contact with the frame and to seal the space between the door and the frame.
