Description

June 10, 1930. c. c. HARRIS GAME AND lGAME PIECE Original Filed Oct. l2, 1927 ik NW fw# s' 3 I Il, I
Patented June 10, 1930 PATENT oFFlcE CARL c. HARRIS, on ORANGE, MASSACHUSETTS GAME AND GAME Risen Rele of application Serial No.` 225,801,
This is asubstitute for an application `filed A by me Cctober 12, 1927,Serial No. 225,801,
` which was allowed, `renewed and allowed to provide a simple and convenient game board with routes along which the game i` piece or pieces can be moved bodily and a j chart to cooperate witha spinner to control the motions of the game piece or pieces and especially to provide agame piece adapted to beheld to a slot in a board andhaving Cf directly upon it a spinner and scale to designate its movements, and means for holding 1t 1n position on `the board.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan of a game board constructed in accordance with this invention with a pair `of game pieces thereon adaptedto move in their respective slots; Q
F ig. 2 is a sectional view across the game `3a board on the line 2-`-"-2 of Fig; l; A ,l
p providedwith twowings 18 and a tail 19 Fig. 3 is a plan of one ofthe game pieces shown in its slot and without the spinner; p i p Fig. l is an edge view of the same; i A Fig. 5 is a sectionalvew on the line 5-5 of Fig.` 3;
structed in accordance with this invention, and y. i
Fig. 7 is a side'view of the same.
and game piece are illustrative of the invention and show a preferred embodiment there- `ofaiid that` the same principle can be carried out in other ways as expressed in the claims. The gameyas illustrated is designed` to beplayed for the `purpose `of, representing y.
Fig. 6 is a plan of another gamepiececon-f It will `be `understood that both the board iatboar'd 10 provided with p filed October 12, 1927. p This application `filedr April 12, 1929.
Serial No. 354,676.
two slots 11 which are shown as curved for an obvious purpose. JAlong each slot on one side, or both, is a series of spaces 12 which are dis-` tinguished from each other, as by different colors, andin this instance the names of the colors appear, although this is not necessary. The course from the starting point to the finish is divided into a series of spaces which may be equalor not, as desired, but where two slots are used they are the same on the two courses preferably. The slots of course eX- tend through the top board orl plate which maybe formed of any desired material.`
Each game piece y is adapted to be sup-` ported in one of theabove mentioned slots and y intended to be irrelnovable Each oneconsists of a body 15 having in this case a stud 16` perpendicular to it and having a head 17`g0n the bottom; Two `resilient cross bars 14j of celluloid or the like are placedonthegame piece, one to bear on the bottom of the board undertheslot and the other to bear on the top. `They are separated by a rigid` plate `13. To-
gether these parts furnish enough" friction to holdthe game pieceanywhere along the slot andprevent much side play of the game piece. This is desirable to `keep the game piece in place, if it is accidentally struck when spinning the spinner.
'In the present instance thegame piece is projecting `over the board on either side and assisting in supporting the ga1ne"`piece and keeping it in'position. At the front end the gaine piece` is shownas providedwith a cir-` cular scale 20 which is divided into spaces in p which there are numerals or other characters l for a purpose to be described.` In this instance the circle is fiat and horizontal. Mounted at the front `is a vertical pin 22 on which is mounted tofreely rotate a spinner 23 .representing an aeroplaneQpropeller.
, This has` an arm 24 forspinning it and is substantially flat and is,also provided withal pointer 251 which extends radially into one i ofthe spacesinthe `scale when the spinner comes torest. l v `The board is also` provided with a chart which is soldesignated on the drawing. This chart is divided by vertical linesinto vertical icc merals are designated generally intwo waysf.
one t-o show whether the game piece is to move forward or back or to remain stationary and.
the other to designate the number of spaces it is to move. These are shown in part by initial letters or abbreviations and they are explained in words at the bottom of the vbaard Oil Milli@ drawing.
In'playingfthe game, twov aeroplane's, as represented by the game pieces, start at the extreme endY of their lrespective slots and the Spinners. are, operatod by the Contestants, or players in alternation. The actions ofthe game 4pieces, are interpreted by the chart'. For example, that one game piece, as, show1i., 'ha,s mevedaway from the start and is on 'the'red space 12,. Its spinner is ro tatedfand stops, for. eiiarnple, at the counter or Sohle dividen 2 Rieforrils tvo tho. Chart tho numeral 2 in :tho left hand columnis yin the saine horizontal lineas the red space designated F1. vThis showsfthat the gamevpiece is to move forward one, sep.. o ,o
It is te be.y Qbserved thateach player has his1 ownV spinner on his own game piece and that thsspionl itself 'addsfol ,the imitation. of anaeroplane which this particular game piece is designed to The spinners dreamt 'Separate and Ilotoapablo. of beine lost, therefore,y The, game pieces are perma-y nently located in ,theiry slotsand cannot be removed vrithouttakngf there, t0 pisses The chart which dosis` ,aros the motions iS a port.
of the game board itself.,V n
Itwill be seen therefore that this is an entirely self cOllta-rled game. andfor thaty rea, son. is apt to last mulch. longer than most gamesin which. parts are removable or detahilble and likelyl'to be lost.l It is made in theform shown to indicate an aeroplane trip. or, ,aeroplane moo. Pr-molnally but of Course' thov'same principle we orrly tao. any other.: the. pamela which @minnen @ones to.

self-propelled device or even one, not self,- propelled.k The same principle can be .used
toerepresent anautomobile or boat race orv even different kinds of animals.
One modification which can be used is shown in Figslff and 7 in lwhich all theprinciplesy above mentionedrare'shown, but the kgamevpiece, instead of being substantially, a fiat body, is solid. The counter 31 is mounted on the end of a substantially. coni-N cal form while thespinner or propeller 33 is mounted on a horizontal axis. This makes `the game piece more nearly resemble an aeroplane. This has its pointer 32 bent out of its own plane a little to keep it near the counter or scale 31. l
It is to be understod that both the board and the game pieces can be modified in numerous ways by any person skilled in the art to represent other articles or otherk contests or gaines or trips without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. rIllerefore I 'doA not wish to limit myself to the exact representation shown in the dra-wings but what I do claim is 1.
