Patented Apr. 22, 1930 PATENT FFECE GEORGE UI-ILIG, OF PORTLAND, OREGON Divine APPARATUS Application filed August 3, 1928.
This invention relates to improvements in diving apparatus, and has particular reference to an appliance adapted to be used by a person under Water in order that the person may inhale a fresh supply of air.
The present invention comprises a simply constructed, easily transportable apparatus that will assure to the user the faculty of being able to readily go below the water in an emergency, such as to rescue a drowned person.
Another object of the invention is to provide a uniquely constructed apparatus that is strong, durable and highly efficient in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a schematic view illustrating the use of the device by a submerged person, and Figurefi is a perspective view of a nose clamp forming part of my invention. In the accompanying drawing wherein for 39 the purpose of illustration is shown a perterred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 4 designates a substantially rectangular buoyant member preferably consisting of cork to which is secured by fastening elements 5 and (3 the lower end of a receptacle 7 having a funnel-shaped conformation. This elementis preferably made oi aluminum and is equipped with a perforated top 8, on which there is secured a socket 9 in which rests an indicating flag 10.
To the lower end of the funnel-shal'red element there is d tachably secured one end of a flexible hose 11, while on the opposite end of the hose there is secured a breathing element designated as a whole by the numeral 12, which includes in its construction two flatdiscs 13 and 14, connected as by a portion 15.
This disc 13 is adapted to be placed in the mouth, while the teeth of the user rest on the Serial No. 297,313.
portion 15. A clamp 16 is employed on the nose of the user.
With the device in use as illustrated to advantage in Figure 2, the user is enabled to obtain "fresh air through the perforated plate, which air will pass through the funnel-shaped element and thence through the hose to the breathing element 12. By means oi this appliance, in an emergency case of a drowning person in a small body of water, the apparatus can be quickly brought into use. The float being on the surface of the water, it will be obvious that the user can readily draw air through the apparatus and accordingly, can stay submerged for a considerable length of time.
T he purpose of the indicating device 10 will also be evident, namely, that it will at all times indicate the location of the submerged person, so that if he is enabled to locate a drowning person a pull on the flexible tubing will actuate the float and give a signal to those ZIlJOXO that the party has been located.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a device which will accomplish all of the objects herein set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes relative to the shape, size, material and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without do iarting from the spirit oi the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A device of the character described comprising a floating air receiving means embodying in I its construction a substantially rectangular buoyant base, a funnel-shaped receptacle centrally positioned on the top of said base, a perforated top plate connected to said receptacle and equipped with a socket for receiving therein an indicating flag, and a flexible tube connected to the bottom of said buoyant base to convey air drawn through the receptacle to a person under water.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
GEORGE UHLIG.
