The present invention relates to improvements in jar closures, and particularly to that pype embodying a screw threaded attaching In appl ing closures of the above character to jars or like receptacles, the closure is given a twisting movement which, just prior to iinal seating of the closure, often causes mutilation of the paper or cardboard liner which is interposed between the button or top portion of the closure and the sealing or finish end of the jar. Such mutilation of the liner is frequently caused by imperfect or rough surface formations on the sealing end of the jar which becom'e embedded inthe liner and tear or otherwise mutilate such liner as it creeps during application of the closure to the An object of the present invention is to provide novel means to overcome the above objection without materially adding to the cost of production of the closures or complieating the application of the closures to containers. To this end, the invention, in its preferred embodiment, consists in interposing a relativel thin disk, of metal or other suitable material, between the button or top portion of the closure and the paperliner, said disk being of less diameter than that of the closure and adapted to provide a smooth hard bearing surface upon which. the button of the closure rotates during the latter part of its application to a container. ' While other forms of liners may well be used,
I have shown for the purpose of the present application, a relatively heavy cardboard disk 16 which is snugly fitted into the closure and faced with a thin wax coated paper disk 17 or the like, the lat-ter adapted to rest upon the sealing end or finish 18 of the jar.
According to the present invention, there vis interposed between the cardboard disk 16 and the button 15 ofthe closure, a relatively light disk 19 of metal or other suitable m'af terial, which provides la bearing surface for said button and'spaces the latter out of contact with the usual liners. This metal disk 19 is perfectly iat and of less area than that of the inner face o f the closure button so that it has free movement in the space between the button 15 and the cardboard lining disk 16. Thus, during the latter portion of the application of the closure to a j ar or the like, there will be effected a relative movement between the contacting faces of the button 15 and metal liner 19, rather than between the usual lining disks and the sealing end or finish .18 of the jar 10. Accordingly, the liner is forced downwardly, without rotation, intov snug sealing contact with the upper end of the jar and there is no distortion of the liner.
In addition to providing means minimizing or entirely eliminating distortion or mutilation of the liner and consequent im erfect sealing of the ar, the placing of the isk 19 as described greatly facilitates loosening and removal of the closure.
Modifications may be resorted to within the spirit and scope ofthe appended claim.
What I claim is:
