This invention relates to electrical wiring systems and particularly to the manufacture of leads or conductors 'comprising a length of insulated exible wiring having its ends provided with terminal clips to facilitate the connecting of the wire with terminal posts of different parts of electrical equipment. Heretofore it has been the practice to cut the desired length of insulated cable from a supply reel, then remove a portion of the insulation near the ends of the cable and then secure a terminal clip to the bared end of the cable.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a machine for severing a piece of cable from a supply length, and for simultaneously cutting the insulation near the adjacent end portions of the cable parts which have been severed. y
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred form of embodiment of the present invention is clearly shown.
In the drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 are side and end views, respectively, of the apparatus for severing the cable and cutting the insulation, the-apparatus being shown in its final operating position.
Fig. 3 is a fra mentary side View of certain parts shown in ig. 1 and showing the apparatus in position for receiving a length of cable to be severed,and the insulation to be cut.

Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the nav ture of the operation produced by the machine upon the work.
The machine comprises a base plate 20 which may be secured to the bed of a punch press. The base vplate 2O supports pilot posts 22 for guiding a movable plate 23 which is adapted to be attached to the plunger or crosshead of the punch press. The blocks 20 and 23 support blocks 24 and 25, respectively. Block 24 has a rectangular opening 26 having a length represented by the dimension A in Fig. 1 and a width re resented by the dimension inFig. 2. ithin the recess 26 is ward the left-hand wall of the recess, as y shown in Fig. 1, by a clamping screw 33 which is secured in clamping position by nut 34. The parts 28 to 32 inclusive are retained within the recess by a pin 35 which passes through suitably-formed, round openings and a halfround groove in the block 24 and half-round grooves in each of the members 28 to 32 inclusive. This construction will be apparent from Fig. 2.
As shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the knife 28 is provided with a semi-circular blade 38; the support 29 is provided with a semi-cylindrical recess 39.; the knife 30 is provided with a V-shaped blade 40; the support 31 is provided with a semi-cylindrical recess 41; and the knife 32 is provided with a semi-circular blade, like the blade of the knife 28. The knife 28 cooperates with a knife 42 having a semi-circular blade 43. The support 29 cooperates with a splitting knife 44 having a wedge-shaped blade 45. The knife 30 cooperates with a knife 46 having a V-shaped blade 47. The support 31 cooperates with a splitting knife 48 having a wedge-shaped blade 49. The knife 32 cooperates with a knife 50 having a blade similar to that o f knife 43.
The parts 42, 44, 46, 48 and 50 are of substantially the same width as the parts 28 to 32, and are received within a recess 51 provided in the block 25. The length of this 'recess is represented by the dimension C in Fig. 1, and the width by dimension D in Fig. 2. A spacingblock 52 is located between the upper ends of the parts 42, 44, 46, 48 and 50,
`and these parts are clamped against the lefthand end of the recess 51 by a bolt 53 which is secured in clamping position by nut 54. A rod 55 similar to the rod -35 .passes through round holes and a half-round groove in the block 25 and half-round grooves formed in one side edge of each of the parts 42, 44, 46, 48 and 50.
The base 20 and block 24 support a pair of headed rods 60 and\\a pair of headed rods 61. Each pair of rods supports and guides a cable-supporting block 62 which is normally urged against the heads of the rods 60 and 61 by springs 63. Each block 62 is provided with an opening 64 for receiving, as shown in Fig. 3, a portion of an insulated conductor 65. The movement of the upper knives 42, 44, 46, 48 and 50 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 1 causes the cable to be severed entirely along the plane of contact of the knives 30 and 46. The knives 28 and 42 and the knives 32 and 50 cooperate to cut the insulation of each end of the cable adjacent the ends thereof but not to cut through the conducting portion of the cable. The cut produced by these pairs of knives is represented in Fig. 7 by the narrow annular groove 70. The support 29 cooperates with the knife 44 and the support 31 with the knife 48 to split the insulation from the groove 70 opposite the ends of the cable portions. The cut produced by either of the knives 44 is represented by the narrow longitudinal groove 71 in Fig. 7. The severed end of the cable is indicated by numeral 72. Numerals *l and 65" in Fig. 3 refer to the ends of the portions of wire 65 which have been severed, have had the insulation cut and from which the insulation has been stripped by a manual operation.
By cutting the cable into desired lengths and simultaneously cutting the cable insulation to facilitate stripping the ends thereof, much time is saved and, therefore, the conducting leads may be manufactured more economically than heretofore.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a referred form, it is to be understood that otlier forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
lVhat is claimed is as follows:
l. Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated wire, comprising in combination, yieldingly mounted spaced blocks for supporting the insulated wire therebetween; means for moving the wire and blocks and adapted to sever the wire between the supporting blocks; and means for piercing the insulation adjacent the point of severance to facilitate removal of the insulation.
2. Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated wire, comprising in combination, means for supporting a strip of insulated wire therebetween; and means comprising a plurality of cutting members simultaneously operable to sever said strip of wire between the supporting means and to cut the insulation circumferentially and lengthwise Aad]acent both ends of the severed pieces.
3. Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated wire, comprising in combination, spaced yieldably mounted blocks supporting the insulated wire means including knives adapted concurrently to sever the -wire between the supporting blocks, to circuniferentially pierce the insulation near the ends of the severed wire portions, and to pierce one side of the insulation, longitudinally of the wire, from the line of severance to the line of circumferential cuts; and means for operating said severing and piercing means.

Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated wire, 'comprising in combination, means for severing the Wire comprising oppositely disposed knife members; a pair of oppositely disposed piercing members on cach side of the severing means and in spaced relation thereto, said pair of members each being so constructed and arranged as to pierce the insulation of the wire, circumferentially near the severed ends thereof; a longitudinal piercing member interposed between one knife member of the severing means and each of the corres onding adjacent members of the oppositely isposed piercing members respectively so as to lie longitudinally of the wire to be pierced, said longitudinal piercing members cutting through the insulation from the point of severence to the circumferential cuts therein.
5. Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated Wire, comprising in combination, a base; spaced supporting blocks yieldingly mounted on said base and between which the wire is supported; a plurality of spaced, stationary knives supported on said base so as to lie directly beneath the wire when supported by the blocks; a plurality of movable knives directly opposite the stationary knives and adapted to cooperate with them concurrently to sever the wire and pierce the insulation circumferentially and longitudinally of the Wire adjacent the point of severance; and means for operating said movable knives.

Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated wire, comprising in combination, a. base; spaced supporting blocks yieldingly mounted on said base and between which the wire is supported; a plurality of spaced, stationary knives supported on said base so as to lie directly beneath the wire when supported by the blocks; a plurality of movable knives directly opposite the stationary knives and adapted to engage the wire and move it, with the supporting blocks, toward the base whereby the wire will be moved into engagement with the said stationary knives which will cooperate with the movable knives to sever the wire and pierce the insulation circumferentially and longitudinally of the wire adjacent the point leo of severance; and means for operating said movable knives.
7. Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated wire comprising, in combination, a base; s aced stationary knives supported on said ase; means yieldingly mounted on the base for supporting the wire in alignment with said stationary knives aplurality of knives movably 1g supported in operative alignment with the stationary knives, with which said movable knives are adapted to'cooperate concurrently to sever the wire and to pierce the insulation thereof circumferentially and longitudinally adjacent to and on each side of the point of severance and means for moving the movable knives toward the stationary knives. l

Apparatus for making electrical conductory leads from a length of insulated wire 2o comprising, in combination, a base; spaced stationary knives carried by said base; blocks slidably supported on upright posts mounted on the base, said blocks having provisions for supporting the wire therebetween in alignment with the stationary knives; springs 1nterposed between the base and blocks normally holding said blocks so that the wire is suspended above the stationary knives; knives movably supported in spaced, operative a1ignment with the stationary knives with which they are adapted to cooperate concurrently to sever the Wire and to pierce the insulation thereof circumferentially and longitudinally of said wire adjacent to and on each side of the point of severance and means for moving the movable knives toward the stationary knives whereby said movable knives will en` gage the wire and move it and its supporting blocks toward the base. 40 In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature. i
