Application filed August 17, 192 s." seriainaaoa 29o, 1
This invention relates to motor vehicle radiators of that type wherein'wat'er from the Cylinder jacket is ."circulated through a plurality of tubes or coresfor'co'olin'g the 5 Water before it 'return'eclto the cylinder jacket. v
The primary objectof the'invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a: radiator, of the above mentioned type v wherein; the water is ciroulatedthrough a series of such tubes brco'res' arranged in a manner whereby a maximum surface of the tubes or cores is exposed to the atmosphere is'simple in construction, positive in operation, efficient in use, and which may be manufactured atsufliciently small co'stto make the same practical for installation on motor vehicles of the inexpensive type.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invent-ion consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein'for the purpose of illustration is shown an embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understoodthat changes,
, variations and modifications may be resorted c to without departing from the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I In the drawings in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a radiator constructed in accordance with this invention showing a portion thereof broken away.
Figure 2 is a central, vertical section through my improved radiator as indicated at line 22 of Figure 1..
Figure-8 is a transverse section through my improved radiator as indicated at line 3-3 of Figure 1. j l i Referring in detail to the drawing the numeral 1 indicates generally a radiator shell rearward sub-compartment 11;
formed with fa] central portion 2fhaving .a pair of side members 3' and having an open front and back; The shell 1 is further formed with an upper water compartment/1':
and a lower wa'ter compartment '5. The bottom wall 6 of the upper compartmentfi. from front to back is formed with-an .oifs'et;portion 7, and from theofi'set portion 7 an a ree;
ate partition 8oexte'nds'to the rear wall 9 thereby dividing" the upper compartment 4 into a forward su'b-compartment lOl and a The lower compartment 5 is rovided a vertical partition 12 which-extends from theupper wall 13 of the compartment 5'to the. lower wall 14' thereof, whereby the lower compartment 5 is divided into a forward sub compartment 15 and ajrearward ua om; partment 16. The s11b-compartments 15 ,and
16 are provided with drain cocks'y17 van'd 18 respectively which open throughthe bottom wall 14 of the compartment 5. j
The central portion2 of the shell 1 provided withia plurality of spaced'plates 19 which extend horizontally and'terminate in the side walls 3. Adjacent the forward edge 20'thereof, each ofthe plates 19 is provided. with a row of perforations 21 through which 1' extend a plurality oftubes o'r cores 22. The tubes 22 extend through the walls 13 and G with-the lower ends 23 of thetubes projecting into the sub compartment and with the upper ends 24 of the tubes projecting into the si'ib-compartment' 10. Spaced froin the: ew of perforation's21 is a similar row of perfo-.
rations 25 through which QeXten d a plurality' of tubes or cores 26 which extend through the walls .13 and 6 with the lower ends'27 of the: tubes projecting into the sub-compartment 1 5 and with the upper ends 28 ofthe tubes Zprojecting into the sub-compartment 11.. 'Adja cent the rearward edge 29', each of the plates 19 is formed with arow of perforations'30. through which extend a plurality-oftubes31 which extend throughthe walls13and 6 with the lower ends 32-ofthefftubes 31 projecting, into the sub-compartment 16 and with the upper ends 33 ofthe tubes 31 the sub-compartment'lla The sub-compartment 10 is p r i cting tq;
ave-ed with p PA EN F a filler neck 34 having a suitable'cap for supplying the radiator with-water. -Having its upper end disposed within the neck 34: is
an overflow pipe 36 which extends vertically throughout'the height of the radiator with its lower end 37 extending therebelow. Disosed beneath the filler neck 34: is an arcuate afile plateBSwhich extends fro'm the front wall 39 of the compartment 4' to the rear wall -9'thereof. Extending through the partition 8 and baffle plate SS'isa steam escape pipeee,
one end of which is disposed within the subcompartment 11 and the other end of which is disposed within the filler neck 34 adjacent the inner end of the overflow pipe 36; i
Leading from the sub-compartment 16 is an' outlet pipe 41 fOICOIIClUClJlHgt-ll water from theradiator tothe cylinder'rj acket of thelwaterfiowsfrom thesub-compartment 10 through the tubesjor cores 22 to the lower sub-compartmentslfi." Due to the forced circul'atiom'the waterrises fromthe lower sub- 3 compartment l5throug.hthe tubes orcores- Qdtothnpper sub-compartment- 11 from which it passes through the tubes or cores 31' r to the lower sub compar'tment 16 to be re turned toith'e cylinder'j acket through the outletipi'pe'l; 'Itfwilljbe readily seen that the Water from the cylinder jacket must traverse the height of the central portion Qofthe radiator three times before it is returned to thecylinder'jacket and throughout the passage of the water through'the tubes 22, -26
andf3l the heat from the water is driven ofi' through the walls of the tubes to. the atmos-f sub-compartment, a vertical partition within the lower compartment to divide the same into a forward sub-compartment and a rearward sub-compartment, a plurality of tubes connectingsaid upper forward sub-compartment with said lower forward sub-compartment, a plurality of tubes ctmnecting each of said lower subs-compartments with said upper rear sub-compartment;said lower rearward'sub-compartment being provided with an outlet and said upper forward sub-compartlnent being provided with an inlet, an
overflow pipe for said upper forward 'subcompartment, and a steam escape pipe connesting said upper rearsub-compartment and having oneend adjacent the inner end of said overflow pipe: A radiator comprising a shell formed with an upper compartn'lcnt and a lower-compartment a partition within the upper compartment to divide the same into a'pair of sub-compartrnents a partition within the lower compartment to divide the same into a pair-of .sub-compart-ments5om of'sa'i'd upper sub co1npartments having an overflow pipe and further having f a plurality of tubes connecting it with one of; said lower sub-compartments, the other of said'upper' sub-compartments having a steam' escape. pipe and further having a plurality of tubes connecting it" with each of said lower subcompartments, said upper compartment being provided with an inlet and said lower] compartment being provided with'anc out- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto. V c
' WILLIAM COLLINS phere with which the outer surfaces of the 7 tubes are in contact thereby cooling the water than advanced degree before'the same is returned to the out-let pipe" 41. Any steamthat might be 'generated'in the upper su-b-compar-t- V mentIO. may pass directly through the overflow pipe36 and any steam which may be generated within the upper sub compartment 11l .miay pass-through'thel steam escape pipe 40;.thence through the overflow pipe 36. c
It is tobe understood that the 'formof the invention'herewith shown and described is to V hetaken as the: preferred exampleofthe same 1 a'n'dL-that various changes i'n'the size, shape and arrangement of parts maybe resorted to wit-houtdepartingfroni" the spirit of the invention or the scopeof the appended claims.
What I claimis I r 1". A radiator comprising a shell formed with lpper compartment and alower com-V partment, an 'arcuatepartition within I the upper compartment to divide the same into a forward sub-compartment and a rearward
