Description

R. NEWTON.
GRASS-LEVELERS. v
No.175,141. v Patented March 21,1876.
WITNESSES 06 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
REUBEN NEWTON, OF SPARTA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRASS-LEVELERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,14 1, dated March 21, 1876; application filed December 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN NEWTON, of Sparta, in the county of White and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Grass-Levelers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my grass-levcler, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in rollers for leveling grass, sod, stalks, and the like in advance of the plow, so that they will be turned under; and it consists in certain novel means whereby the roller is attached to the plow-beam, so that it may be readily removed and as readily applied again; also, in means, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby the roller is made laterally adjustable with reference to the beam, and is thus adapted for use inconnection with a right or left hand plow, as will be fully understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the beam of a plow, in connection with which I shall illustrate my invention. This beam is provided with a clevis, to which the draft-animals are attached, and in rear of the clevis with one or more spaced perforations, a, the object of which will hereinafter appear. B represents a cylindrical metallic or wooden roller of suitable dimensions and weight, which is provided with a bail, G, by means of which it is connected to the plowbeam. Bail 0 consists of two sections, b b, which are attached, in theusual manner, to the ends of the roller, and which, extending to the front, are connected to aflat i '|shaped metallic plate, D, in the following manner: The free ends of the sections b b are passed from opposite directions through flanges c of plate D, which flanges are at right angles to the body of the plate, and are provided with perforations for the reception of the bail-sections, and they are prevented from casual detachment therefrom by means of nuts n, which are applied upon the projecting screw-threaded ends of the same outside of flanges c, as shown in Fig. 1. E represents a metallic sleeve, which is passed over the end of beam A, and is of corresponding shape therewith, upon the under side of which is a broad flat hook, c. This sleeve is secured to the beam by means of a pin, f, of metal, which passes through registering perforations in the beam and sleeve, and which also extends through a perforation, i, in plate D, and one in hook 0, when the plate is engaged in the hook, as shown in Fig. 2, by which means the roller is permanently, but removably, attached tothe beam. Plate D is provided with spaced perforations i, by means of which the leveling-roller is made laterally adjustable with reference to the beam, thus adapting the said roller for use in connection with a right or a left handed plow. The effect of the roller is to beat down and press into the ground all stalks, weeds, clods, and the like, immediately in advance of the plow-point, so that they will be effectually turned under and placed out of the way of subsequent cultivation.
In practice the leveling-roller will be slightly longer than the distance between the furrows.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the plow-beam A and transverse roller B, the bail 0, plate D, having spaced perforations 2', perforated hooked sleeve E, and pinf, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the laterally-adjustable and removable leveling-roller B with the beam A of a plow, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN NEWTON. Witnesses:
