My invention relates to improvements in railway pads, and has for its purposes to provide a wear resisting protection pad and cushion intended for use between railway ties and rails, or railway ties and tie plates, switches, frogs or the like; lto provide a pad capable of furnishing protection to the t-ie from moisture and weather conditions, eliminating the cutting and rupture; to insure a minimum wear of railway ties in use; to minimize the noise and rattle of ties, tieplates and railway tracks; to increase the normal life of railway tracks and rolling stock used upon the same; and'to provide the various other advantages and results made eviden from the following s eciication.
I accomplish the o jects of my invention 'by coating'that side (hereinafter called the under side) of a suitable elastic padl (preferably of asbestos) intended for use against the railroad tie, with a solution of adhesive waterproofing material (preferably creosote and pitch).
In use, the coating on the pad seals the pores or other openings in that portion of the tie beneath the pad, rendering it moisture proof and causing it to adhere to the pad, thus causing the ad to act as an effective roof `and protection t ereto. In wear, as the tie becomes compressed by the weight of the rail, and passing rollin stock thereon, so as to cause a settlin o the surface, the pad, or roof so called, ecomes increasingly effective in excluding moisture from the tie and avoidinv resultant deterioration. - r'I'he variousfeatures of novelty embodied in my invention are hereinafter characterized and indicated, and particularly soin the appended claims, but fora full understanding 40 of the invention, its objects and'advantages, reference is made to the following detailed Y description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the various views.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows an end view of my improved' pad mounted between a railway tie and a railway plate with an end view of the rail surmounting same. Figure 2 shows a perspective view lof the pad.
Referring against to Figure l, A shows the railway tie, B shows the pad, B2 shows the waterproof coating on the pad, C shows the tie plate. D shows the rail. E shows the spikes which hold lthe assembled parts in their relative position.

While I have illustrated and described a preferred construction for carrying my invention into efect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
It is, ofcourse, evident that the use of the railway plate shown is merely optional.
Having thus Idescribed my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America 1. A pad for a rail of a railroad, or other Vpart of a track, composed of` asbestos and having its under side coated with a waterproof adhesive material.
2. A pad of asbestos, having-.its under side coated with a waterproof adhesive material, betw'een a-rail of a railroad or other part of a track and the supporting tie therefor.
3. A pad for a rail of a railroad, or other part of a track, composed of a durable cushion substance, having its under side coated with a waterproof adhesive material, betweensaid part and a support therefor.
'4. The combination with a railroad rail and ,its tie,of an intervening'pad, having its under side coated with a waterproof adheeoA iivde materiaL as and for the purposes specie l `v 5. As an improved article of manufacture, a pad for railway rails, comprising an elastic block with a flat undersurface coated with a Waterproof adhesive material, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
6. The combination With a railroad' rail, tie plate and tie, of an intervening pad, having its underside coated with a Waterproof adhesive material, as and for the purposes stated.
