THOMAS J. MAXEY, OF MIAMI SHORES, FLORIDA.
COMBINATION GIGARETTE AND MATCH-BOX CONTAINER.
Application filed October 28, 1922, Serial No. 597,578. Renewed January 10, 1927.
riding means for holding a standard pack of cigarettes and a box of safety matches, means are provided whereby the matches may be brought into contact with a match scratching material exposed through one side of the container.
And a still further object of my invention is to provide a smoking appliance of the above indicated character, which is simple in construction, durable, efficient for the purpose intended, and one that can be manufactured and placed on sale at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this speoication,
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the interior portion of my cigarette case and match container.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through a container constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure L is a fragmentary end view of my container, showing means for providing a match scratching material therein.
Figure 5 is afront elevation of a modified form of container.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view through a modified form.
Figure 7 is a horizontal section through a modified form.
Figure 8 is a horizontal section through a further modified form.
Figure 9 is a vertical section through the modified form shown in Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a plan view of the modified form shown in Figure 8 with the cover removed.
form shown in Figure 11.
' the matches, and
Figure is a vertical section'through the modified form shown in Figure 14.
Referring to 'the accompanying drawings in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the different views. In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a casing which can be constructed ofany suitable material, and is provided with end flaps 2 and 3, a front flap 4- and a cover 5,
which has -a snap fastener 6. for engagement with a snap button 7 carried by the front of, the containerl. In this preferred form of my invention, the container is constructed to receive a standard size'pack ofcigarettes as-indicated by the numeral 8. Before the package of cigarettes is placed -within the container, the cover of same is removed. A box which is preferably constructed of metal as indicated by the numeral 9 is also positioned within the container 1 and is adapted to receive therein a package of safetymatchesas shown by the numeral 10. The front and side walls of this preferred form of container are provided with openings for exposing there through strips of match scratching material 11. The material 11 is inserted between the metal box 9 and the walls of the con tainer.
In Figure 5 I have shown a modified form of my invention, wherein the container 1 is divided into two compartments by means of a partition 12 which is formed integral with the bottom and side walls of the container. In this form of invention, a space 13 is provided to receive the cigarettes, while the matches are placed in the space 14 between the rear wall of the container and the partition 12." Guide strips 15 are secured to the front of the container in any suitable manner for receiving therein match scratching material 11.
In Figure 8, I have shown a still further modified form, wherein the container 1 is provided with a removable cover 16, and the i t ic of e contai er s d v e into three f, with a hinged cover19, and the cover 19 is provided with a pocket receiving chamber 20, for receiving safety matches therein. A strip of match scratching material 11 is also secured to the underside of the cover 19. One of the end walls of the container 1 is provided with an extension 21, which forms a closure for the match receiving chamber when the lid 19 is in a closed position as indicated in Figure 11.
In Figures 14L and 15, I have shown a slight attachment to my container as indicated in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4. This attachment comprises a false bottom 22, having an operating knob 23 attached thereto and projecting outwardly through an opening 24E formed in one wall of the metal box 9 and end wall of the container 1, so that by moving the knob 23 upwardly in the slot 2a, the false bottom 22 is also raised upwardly, thus elevating the matches above the top of the container, so that same may be easily grasped.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that any further explanation as to the construction, operation, and objects of my invention is unnecessary.
Nhile I have shown and described the preferred forms of my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, and there fore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangement of parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A container comprising a casing open at its upper edge and provided at the upper edges .of opposite side walls with flaps, one of which is adapted to completely bridge the space between the opposite side walls and the other flap being of such transverse breadth as to partially bridge said space, a
partition located interiorly of the casing and dividing the same into a cigarettecompartment and a match retaining compartment, said flaps adapted to fold over both compartments and means for projecting the end portion of a match beyond the end of the match compartment when the broad flap is opened and the narrower flap is closed with relation to the open side of the casing.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature.
THOMAS J. MAXEY.
