M. SPIRO WATCHCASE Filed May 9, 1925 INVENTOR v ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 9 19271 UNITED STATES MAX SPIRO, 01 SEA GATE,'NEW YORK.
'wAToncAsE.
Application filed May 9, 1925. Serial no. 28,996.
The main object of this invention is to provide an ornamental and eflicient wrist watch having several novel characteristics, The wrist watch is composed of amovement which is retained in a carrier, the carrier being removably mounted in a casing. The invention concerns itself with the movement carrier and casing, and means for retaining a dial in position over the movement carrier so that no shifting of the dial is possible when the watch is shaken. The outer casing of the watch is composed of a pair of members which are releasably locked to each other and when openor dislocated from each other, expose either the bottom of the movement or the dial. The casing has means thereon which cooperates with additional means on the movement carrier for retaining said movement carrier in place in one unit of the casing when the casing has been dislocated or spread apart.
' The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure leis a front elevational view of the watch as worn. a i i Figure 2 is a sectional elevational view taken longitudinally thru the center of one type of'watch in which the movement carrier is retained in the upper half of the outer casing.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing the modified type of device in which the movement carrier is retained in the lower half of the outer casing.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the dial used in the watch. I
Figure 5 is a perspective view, showing the lower half of the casing unit of the modified type of catch with a portion of the movement carrier mounted in place therein.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the movement carrier per se.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the upper half of the preferred type of watch casing. This casing is formed hollow of a unit of material and provides a shell substantially square in outline which has arms 11 extending therefrom from the corners parallel to each other. These hollow arms in the preferred type of device have openings 12 therein on the mutually adjacent mutually walls and into these holes, the ends of telescopic push pins 13 are inserted. The face 14 of the rectangular portion of the casing serves as a frame for the watch crystal which is fitted into place in the frame and 1s ornamented around its rim, as illustrated, or in any other fashion desired. The casmg which completely encloses the watch is comprised of two members, an upper unit described as member 10, and a lower unit 15 which is of the sameoutline as the casing unitlO, but has no opening, as is the case with the upper frame 10. This casing unit 1s also provided with arms 16 which align with the arms 11 of the upper frame and form a compact casing in the chamber of which the watch movement is mounted. The side walls 17 of the upper frame unit 10 between the arms 11, thereof have semicircularly curved tongues 18 extending thruout the greater portion of the length thereof. These tongues are adapted to cooperate with converging side walls 19 formed between the arms 16 of the lower casing 15, when the casing members 10 and 15 are mutually interlocked. 'In the modified type of watch casing illustrated in Figure 3, the tongues 20 form projections which extend upwardly from the walls 19 of the casing 15 and are adapted to engage converging walls 21 of the upper casmg member 10, that is, the relation of the tongue toits opposite member is directly reversed in the modified type of easing. These tongues, as previously stated, are bent semicircularly and project inwardly in the compartment formed by the interlocked casing frame 10 and 15. The semi-circular portions ofthese tongues serve additionally as a means for locking the-movement carrier in'place in the frame of which the tongues form a part. In the modified type of casing, the tongues form a part of the lower casing frame 15, consequently, the movement carrier is releasably fixed by the tongues within this lower casing frame 15, and in the preferred form, the reverse is true. The movement carrier comprises a flat plate 22 having side walls 23 and end walls 24. The end walls 24 are provided with deformed portions which present channels 25 in which the semi-circular portions of the tongues 20 of the cooperating casing frame 15 or 10 is adapted to be received in securing the movement carrier in the particular casing frame. This member forming the movement carrier is ada ted to house the entire watch movement t erein and the plate 22 is provided with the relatively large opening 26 thru which access may be had to the face portion of the movement. Near each one of the corners of the movement carrier plate 22, cars 27 are provided by slitting the material forming the plate 22 on three sides of .1 rectangle and bending the enclosed ortion angularly upward, as indicated in ig-' ures 5 and 6. These ears serve as a position member for a'dial plate 28 which has its face provided with the usual watch numbers 29, and at its corners,- has cut-out portions 30 which are adapted to receive the car portions 27 of the movementcarrier when the dial plate isflaid upon theface of the plate 22. An additional member, detachable from the movement carrier, is adapted to cooperate therewith in retaining the movement in place in the carrier; This additional member comprises a rectangular plate 31 which isof the same size as the plate 22 and is also provided with adopening 32 which exposes the greater portion of the contained movement in the movement carrier so that the same may-be repaired or observed, as desired. This retainer plate 31, has ateach of its corners, an extension which forms an integral part of the plate 31 and are bent at right angles thereto to provide flexible legs which are inserted into thc'carrier frame and lie in contact with the walls 24.-
The main features of this watch case are that a watch movement may be mounted in a movement carrier, the movement carrier mounted within an outer casing consisting of two units which interlock without the aid o'tany tools, or as is commonly used, solder. The watch movement is mounted within the movement carrier which serves as a housing for the movcmentand then the plate 22 of the movement carrier is covered by the dial plate 28 which is positioned by inserting the angular-1y upsturned cars 27 into the cut-out portions 30 formed on the dial plate. By having these cars 27 on the movement carrier cooperate with the cut-out portions 30 on the dial plate, shifting of the dial plate is, as is so common, eliminated. In the preferred type of device, the movement carrier is mounted in the upper unit 10 of the casin as this unit is provided with semi-circii arly curved tongues 18. The curved portions of the tongues are adapted to enter into the channels 25 providedby deforming the walls 24 of the movement carrier and in .type of watch, in the lower casing unit 15,
the tongues 21 are adapted to cooperate by engagingthe opposite casing unit to lock the units 10 and 15 to each other, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3. Thus a complete watch casing, including the outer casing, a movementcarrier, and a dial, is being shown as completely assembled without the aid of any tools, as is the purpose of the invention.
I claim In a watch having a casing consisting of two interlocking members, one of said mem-* bers having oppositely disposed inwardly curved tongues, a movement carrier engaging the casing having said tongues comprising a flat plate square in outline, side walls on all four sides of said ')late, fiat-bottomed recesses formed in the wa ls of two opposing sides, said tongues registering in said recesses to retain the movement carrier ihplace inonc of the casing members, said recesses being depressed inwardly and toward each other forming channels open on the outer surfaces of the walls, said movementcarrier being open on one side, the casing members when interlocked engaging and releasably retaining thev movement carrier in position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MAX SPIRO.
