A pair of pins 38 and 39, diametrically pposed to each other, project upwardly from the face of the spur gear 15. The pin 38 is slidable in a slot 40 which extends horizontally across part of the width of a looking bar 41. The lower end of the locking bar 42 is adapted to be extended thru a channel 43 out of the lock and in a clownward direction. The remaining pin 39, mounted on the opposite side of the face of the spur gear operates slidably in a widthwise extending slot 44 formed in a locking bar 45, whose end 46 extends out of a channel 47 situated near one corner of the casing. The locking bar is slidable longitudinally into a chamber 190i the casing and its retractive movement is limited by a stop pin 48. Two of the corners of the casing walls are provided with bosses 49 in which threaded holes 50 are provided which are engaged by screws passingthru suitable openings formed in the cover 29.
This mechanism 'is adapted to extend the ends 46 and 42 of the locking bars 41 and 45 in'opposite directions out of the casing of the mechanism. The barsmay be of a length suitable to extend from the center of the upper and lower ends of the door so that the ends 42 and 46 of said bars may be projected into the customary recesses of suitable keepers, said keepers not being shown on the drawing. When a key is inserted into the barrel located in the cylinder 23, the plungers in the housing 24 are normally aligned with the periphery of the barrel as is well known, after which said barrel may then be readily rotated in either direction. As the barrel is rotated, the plate 22 is rotated a corresponding degree, carrying with it the round shaft 21 and the square end 30. As the square end 30 normally carries the sleeve 33, which latter is square in cross section and slidable in the square opening 20 of the pinion gear, the latter is rotated also to a corresponding degree as the barrel in the key cylinder. Rotation of this pinion 18 transmits movement to the spur gear 15 and the pins 38 and 39 describe an arcuate movement and cross from one side of the sleeves 40 and 44 to the opposite ends. As these pins 38 and 39 move longitudinally in either direction, the locking bars 41 and 45 are moved in the same direction as their corresponding pins and are either retracted or extended accordingly as the spur gear is rotated. In this'manner, the locking bars 45 and 41 may be retract-ed or extended thru the means ofa key inserted into the barrel of the locking cylinder. In order to extend or retract these locking bars from the opposite side of'the door, the wing plate 34 is depressed or pushed in wardly toward the look so that the additional sleeve 32 comes in contact with the round portion of the shaft 21. This permits the sleeve 33 to be rotated independently of the shaft 21 and as the sleeve 33 is square in cross section and slidably fits into the square opening 20 of the pinion, the latter and spur gear may be rotated accordingly as the wing plate 34 is rotated. When 30 so that the locking mechanism is normally in a position which permits the locking bars to be either extended or retracted by means of the key.
It is to be noted that certain changes in form and construction may be made without departing from the spirit'and scope of the invention.
1. In a lock, a casing, a spur gear rotatable in said casing, a pinion in the casing meshing with said spur gear, locking bars extending from said casing and being extensible and retractable out of said casing, diametrically opposed pins on opposite sides of said spur gear, said locking bars having slots therein, said pins engaged in said slots, the spur gear when rotated arcuately extend ing or retracting said locking bars, and means for independently actuating said locking bars from either side of a door.
2. In a lock,'a casing, a spur gear rotatable in said casing, a pinion in the casing meshing with said spur gear, locking bars extending from said casing and being extensible and retractable out of said casing, diametrically opposed pins on opposite sides of said spur gear, said locking bars having slots therein,said pins engaged in said slots, the spur gear when rotated: arcuately extending or retracting said locking bars, said slots extending widthwise in the lockingbars, the pins on said spur gear passing from i one end of said slots to the'opposite end when said spur gear is rotated in retracting or extending said locking bars, and cooperating means extending from opposite sides of'the casing for independently actuating said spur gear from opposite sides of a door. 4. In a lock, a casing, a spur gear rotatable in said casing, a pinion in the casing meshing with said spur gear, locking bars extending from said casing and being extensible and retractable out of said casing, diametrically opposed pins on opposite sides of said spur gear, said locking bars having slots therein, said pins engaged in said slots, the spur gear when rotated arcuately extending or retracting said locking bars, said slots extending widthwise in the locking bars, the pins on said spur gear passing from one end of said slots to the opposite end when said spur gear is rotated in retracting or extending said locking bars, cooperating means extending from opposite sides of the casing for independently actuating said spur gear from opposite sides of a door comprising a key cylinder mounted on'one side of said casing, a round shaft extending from said key cylinder actuated thereby into the casing, said pinion having a square opening therein larger than said shaft, a sleeve slidable in the square opening of said pinion and rotatable on said shaft, said shaft being circular in cross section, a square end integral with and projecting from said shaft, said sleeve being slidable on said square end and when so positioned look ing the sleeve rotatably on said square end, and means for normally causing the sleeve to engage the square end of said shaft.
