UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CAM- SHAFT CONTROL.
Application filed June 18, 1926. Serial No. 116,938.
Ihis invention relates to internal combus tion engines, and aims to provide novel means, whereby the maximum speed of the engine which is determined by the relative position of the cam shaft and crank shaft of the engine, may be increased at the Wlll of the operator.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for moving either the exhaust valve, cam shaft or the intake valve cam shaft peripherally with respect to the crank shaft, while the engine is in opera-' tion.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for setting the cam shafts in such a way that the motor may be made to operate in either direction.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combinat-ion and arrangement of parts .and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure '1 is an elevational view illuscrating a cam shaft and a cam shaft setting mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention. I 1
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the actuating mechanism, a portion there of being shown in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line of Figure 2.
Figure 1 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the attachment to be secured at one end of a cam shaft and Figure 5 is an elevational view of the cam shaft operating sleeve.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the usual cam shaft, which is supplied with .the usual cams 6 that engage the valve lifters 7, all of which form a part of the usual internal combustion engine structure. V
The device forming the essence of the present invention embodies shaft 8 that is provided with an elongated opening 9 extended therethrough, one end of the shaft being reduced at 10 to be fitted in a suitable bore formed in one end of the cam shaft 5,
where it is secured as by means of a pin 11.
The shaft 8 is formed with bearings 12 and 13 disposed adjacent to the ends thereof, which bearings provide supports for the sleeve 14 that is fitted thereover. Elongated openings 15 are formed in the sleeve 15 and are disposed on opposite sides there of, the openings being suitably. inclined in opposite directions for thereception of. the pin 16. i
This pin-16 also extends through the opening 9 to connect the shaft 8 and sleeve 14 in such a way that rotary movement of the sleeve 14; will produce a rotary movement of thelshaft 8 and cam shaft 5 connected there- Wit 1.
An actuating sleeve is shown as positioned over the sleeve 14 and is indicated by the reference character 17, the sleeve 17 being provided with an offset portion 18 disposed intermediate its ends, whicholfset portion accommodates the connecting pin 16.
An opening is formed in. the offset portion l8'of sleeve 17, whichopening is of a diameter to permit the pin 16 to be slid into position, whereupon the opening is closed by means of the threaded plug 20.
The timing gears are indicated generally by the reference character 19 and are of the usual and well known construction. A suitable operating lever or governor controlled mechanism, not shown may be connected to the actuating sleeve 17, for moving the sleeve 17 longitudinally of the sleeve let to accomplish the purpose of the invention.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that should .it be desired to change the relative positions of the cam shafts and crank shaft of an engine, it is only necessary to move the actuating sleeve 17 longitudinally of the sleeve 14, whereupon the pin 16 engages the wallsof the inclined openings 15 transmitting a rotary movement thereto, which at the same time, rotates the cam shaft 5, through the shaft 8, to change the positions of the cams 6 with respect to the crank openings formed therein, an actuating sleeve mounted on the first mentioned sleeve and having an offset portion, a pin mounted Within the offset portion and extending through the curved opening of the first mentioned sleeve and through the elongated opening of the second mentioned shaft,'and
said actuating sleeve adapted to move the pin through the openings to rotate the cam shaft. 7 U
2; in combination with a cam shaft of an engine, a shaft connectedwith the cam shaft and having an elongated opening, a sleeve positioned on the second mentioned shaft and'having curved openings formed in opposite sides thereof, an actuating sleeve mounted on 'the first mentioned sleeve, a pin car; ried by the actuating sleeve and disposed within the openings of the sleeve and shaft, and said actuating sleeve adapted to be moved longitudinally of the first mentioned sleeve to rotate the cam shaft.
3. In combination with a cam shaft of an engine, a shaft connected with the cam shaft and having an elongated opening, a sleeve mounted on the second mentioned shaft and having curved openings disposed in opposite directions, a sleevemounted on the first 35 mentioned sleeve, a pin carried by the sec- 0nd mentioned sleeve, means for mounting the pin Within the second mentioned sleeve to permit the second mentioned sleeve to rotate around the pin, and said pin adapted to operate to transmit rotary movement to the cam shaft. y
i. In combination Witha cam shaft of an engine, ashaft connected with the cam shaft and having an elongated opening, bearings at the ends of the second mentioned shaft, a sleeve mounted on the second mentioned shaft and adapted to operate on the bearings, said sleeve having curved openings, a pin extending through the openings, a sleeve engaging the pin and adapted to move the pin through the openings of the first men tioned sleeve, and second mentioned shaft for rotating the cam shaft.
In combination with a cam shaft of an engine, a shaft at one. end of the cam shaft and having an elongated opening, a sleeve mounted on the second mentioned shaft and having a curved opening, an actuating sleeve mounted on the first mentioned sleeve, said actuating sleeve having an offset portion defining a circular groove, a pin'disposed With- 1n the groove and extended through the openings of the first mentioned shaft and first mentioned sleeve, and said actuating sleeve adapted to be moved longitudinally of the shaft to rotate the cam shaft.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ailined my signature.
HOWARD MILLER FEY.
