Description

June 7, 1927.
J. CHAMBERS TONG 5 Filed Nov. 27 1925 Patented June 7, 1927.
PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES CHAMBERS, OF PAVO, GEORGIA.
TONGS.
Application filed November 27, 1925. Serial No. 71,765.
This invention relates to tongs and contemplates a structure including a pivotally mounted jaw capable of permitting a tight grip to be obtained onrounded heads of bolts, and also capable of being used to good advantage in the capacity of a pipe wrench.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and
wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tongs partly in section.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one jaw of the tongs.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the other jaw.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 and 11 represent the handles of the tongs which are crossed and pivoted as at 12, the handle 10 being provided with the usual arcuate shaped slot 13 to allow the space between the jaws to be increased or varied.- The outer end of each handle is formed to provide a wrench 1t capable of being used with ditferentsized nuts. The handle 10 is extendedbeyond its pivot 12 and offset to pro vide a jaw 15, the inner surface of which is provided with'a series of transverse teeth 16, while the same surface at the outer end of the aw is formed with a series of teeth 17 arranged longitudinally or at right angles to the teeth 16. The handle 11 is offset at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees as at 18 and bifurcated as at 19 to accommodate the reduced portion 20 of a pivoted jaw indicated at 21. The oifsetportion 18 is provided with a beveled surface 1%, adapted to be engagedby a beveled surface 21 at one end of the pivoted jaw 21,:
movement of said jaw in one direction. When the jaw 20 is arranged ina true vertical position, it lies 7 wholly within the fixed jaw 15, and can be swung to assume difi'erent angular positions with relation to the latter, and alwaysar ranged beneath the jaw 15. As shown in Figure 2, this jaw has its outer. end formed 'oted, jaw when'in a vertical position being with a seriesof transverse teeth 22 to cooperate with the teeth 16 when the tongs are used in the capacity of apipe wrench or the like. This end of the jaw 21 is also formed with a series of longitudinally dis posed teeth 23, arranged at right angles to the teeth 22, and are used in connection with the'teeth 17 for gripping the round heads of boltsto prevent the latter from turning while applying or'removing a nut therefrom, as will be readily understood. The jaw 21 can be arranged at different angles with relationto the jaw 15, which in addition to the adjustment provided by the arcuate shaped slot13 allows the tongs to be easily and quickly adjusted for work of dif-' ferent sizes. 7
a While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood thatI do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may 7 be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of What is claimed. Having thus described the invention, What is claimed-as new, is
Tongs including a pair of crossed pivoted handles, one handle extending beyond the adjacent end 'of the other handle andformed with a right-angularly disposed. jaw, there being a series of transverse teeth formed on one side of, the jaw and a series of longitudinally disposed teeth arranged'on'th'e free end of the jaw, said adjacent end of the other handle being offset approximately forty-five degrees and bifurcated, said extension terminating within the confines of said fixed jaw,. and a pivoted'jaw including a reduced shank received by said bifurcation and pivoted therein andYhaving a transverse series of teeth and alongitudinal series of teethto cooperate with the corresponding series of teeth on the first mentioned jaw, said pivwholly disposed beneath said fixed jaw, said i offset portion of the handle having a beveled surface, and the adjacent endof said pivoted;
jaw having a, similar surface adapted to en-, 105 gage the beveled surface of the handle to limit the pivotal movement of the jaw in one direction.
