7 Application filed June 22, 1926. Serial No. 117,777.
This invention relates to an improved draw bar construction and it has reference to the type'of draw bar which is composed of sections; for instance a main central section and a pair of end sections, the end sections being capable of being folded over'on top of the central sections to provide a comparatively small device such as may be easily drawn through gate ways and other restricted openings.
My principal aim is to generally improve upon devices of this class by providing one of comparative simplicity and durability wherein positive means is associated with the sections to hold them firmly in operating position.
.One feature of construction is the novel hinge connection between the central section and the end sections together with the cooperating means which is adapted to bridge the gap between the sections to hold them in horizontal alignment.
A further feature of construction is the draft means which is arranged to equalize the pull in order to evenly distribute it to the several sections. v
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawing.
In the drawing V Figure 1 is a top plan view of a draw bar and draft equalizing appliance constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross section taken approximately on the plane of the line 22 of Figure 1, and v Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the end connection between the sections.
Referring to the drawing in detail, itwill be seen that the reference character 1 designates the central section of the bar structure, and the reference character 2 the duplicate end sections, these end sections may be arranged in the same plane with the central section or they may be folded on top of the central section, whereby to make the structure either wide or narrow according to requirements. Under ordinary conditions the sections 1 and 2 are made of wood and at the adjacent ends of the respective sections are metal reinforcing strips 3 and 4. In other words there are two pairs of the strips 3 on the intermediate section 1 and one pair of strips 4: on the inner ends of the two end sections 2. It will be noted as shown better in Figure 3 that one of the strips 3 oneach end of the main section 1 and a comleg and this arrangement of parts provides 2 a special hinge connection between the end sections and the central sections, permitting the end sections to be swung up and over on top of the central section to provide a comparatively small package in order to reduce the width of the structure for permitting it to be drawn easily through narrow gate ways. In order to maintain the sections in horizontal alignment U-shaped members 8 are fastened to the sections, as shown. The central portion of each U shaped member is provided with a short arch 9 through which a connecting bar 10 passes slidably. One or more of the arches may be provided with a set screw 11 for securing the strip in place. Obviously, this strip is adapted to bridge the space between the adjacent ends of two' of the sections shown in the drawings tohold the sections in horizontal alignment. By removinq the strip the hinge connections come into play to permit the end section to be swung up and out of the way. The draw bar is provided with rigidly fastened connectors 12 and 13. Moreover, appropriate hooks 14 are provided for connecting the entire draw bar structure with the drag in a well known manner. v
As before stated, novel means is employed for connecting the source of draft to the improved draw bar. In this connection it will be noted that the connectors 12 are bolted to the opposite ends of the central section 1 of the draw bar while the connector 13 is bolted to the centre thereof. It follows that a flexible chain 15 is connected with the connector 13 and with a ring 16. Also connected with this ring at their outer ends are rods 17 which are in turn connected at their inner.
ends with the connectors12. This applies the-line of draft directly to the central section of the draw bar. For distributing the pull equally however additional rods 18 areconnected with the ring 16, with small rings 19 and with the connectors 12 through-the medium of links 20. Also connected with the rings 19 and adjustable brackets 21 secured to the ends of the end sections 2' are supplemental rods 22. Itis clear from the foregoing that the' power or pull is uni,-
fo-rm'ly distributed by this mechanism in order that there will be no tendency for the end sections of the bar to lagor to break their hinge connections with the central sections. I
The construction and operation of the i111} proved structure will doubtless be clear froin the description and drawings, and a more lengthy description is therefore thought un- Minor changes oming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if de- .Having thus described the invention, what I claim as neW and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v In a draw bar, a central section, a pair of end sections hingedly connected to the ends central section, the rods of the inner pair being connected at their outer endsto the corresponding ends of said central section, small rings carried by the outer ends of the outer rods, link COIiIIECtlO'IlS between the small rings and the ends of the central section adjustable brackets connected to the outer ends of the end-sections, and COI'1I18C-.
tions between the small rings and said brackets.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature.
