ANTIGLARE ATTACHMENT FOB HEADLIGHTS.
Application filed February 2'7, 19%. Serial Ito. 91,135.
This invention relates to an antiglare attachment for headlights.
The object of the invention is the construction of a simple and eflicient device for the entire elimination of glare from a headlight, such as is used on motor vehicles, and in connection with this invention, I desire to state that thi is an improvement on my prior invention as disclosed in the co-pending application Ser. No. 56,500, filed Sept. 15, 1925, upon Antiglare attachment for headlights.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of my antiglare device, shown in a headlight.
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of my antiglare device, showing the same in position in a headlight.
Figure 3 is a rear view of my antiglare attachment or device.
Figure 4: is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the device.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the device showing particularly one of the spacing prongs.
Figure 6 is a rear view of an embodiment of the device, while Figure 7 is a vertical transverse sectional view of this embodiment.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the headlight, 2 is the glass lens, and 3 is the fabric. cord usually interposed between the lens 2 and the outer edge of the body of the light.
My antiglare device or attachment comprises a front plate t and a back or inner plate 5. The front or outer plate 4 is preferably provided with four outwardly eX- tending angular spacing fingers 6. These fingers 6 hear at their outer ends against the lens 2, Figure 1, so as to allow suiiicient Space for the blades 7 which blades extend outwardly towards the lens 2. At the top and bottom of the outer plate 4; are integral anchor prongs 8. These prongs 8 are bent against the outer edge of the body of the headlight 1, and extend into or under the cord 3 for assisting in anchoringthe antiglare device inplace.
The inner or rear plate 5 is provided with outwardly extending slats 9, and these slats are positioned between the space plates at and 5, as is clearly shown in Figure 1. The plates l and 5 are held in their spaced position by means of spacing elements 10, which are preferably prongs, having bodies 11 with reduced tongues 12. The bodies, at their ends, constitute shoulders, and the tongues are passedthrough elongated apertures in the plates and then are bent back upon the plates, as clearly shown in Figure 1 for holding the plates in a true spaced position, and allowing the slats 7: and 9 to be placed close together, and resembling a slightly overlapping position, so that the rays from the bulb 12 will be reflected clownwardly at A, Figure 1, from the under face of one slat to the top face of the contiguous slat and thence the rays B will be reflected outwardly upon the roadway, thus preventing any glare from occurring, as would be the case if I did not use a double spaced plate structure, as shown.
As seen in Figure 2, my antiglare device does not occupy the portion C of the headlight 1, permitting a little of the light to pass around the edge of the device, yet the intense center rays from the bulb are covred and have to pass through my slatted de vice, thereby preventing a glare.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 6 and 7, the back or inner plate 18 is provided with angular slats 14, corresponding to similar slats 15 on the front plate 16. Integral spacing prongs 17 are formed upon the back plate 13, and these prongs 17 have tongues 18 that extend through the front plate 16 and are bent back upon the same, Figure 7. The front plate 16 is provided with the spacing fingers 6, as hereinbefore mentioned,
in connection with the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 5.
The parallel position of the slats on the two plates, and the extending of the same outwardly, as clearly shown in Figure 1 prevent any possible glare from occurring in a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. The fingers 6 space the plate 4 from the lens 2, and the spacing elements 10 space the rear or inner plate from the front plate.
I found it of material help to form the anchoring flanges 8 upon the device, because when placing the device in the headlight, with the prongs engaging the cord 3, this materially helpsin properly positioning the anti-glare device in the headlight.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a front plate provided with outwardly extending spacing fingers, said front plate provided with anchoring prongs and with slats, said front plate provided with tongue receiving apertures, a back plate provided with slats positioned parallel to the slats of the front plate, and spacing elements on the back plate and provided with tongues extending through the tongue receiving apertures of the front plat-e and bent back upon said front plate.
2. An antiglare device comprising plates, means for spacing said plates apart, slats on said plates and extending in the same direction, and slightly overlapping each other for throwing rays downward, and one of said plates provided with outwardly extending spacing fingers and with cord engaging and anchoring prongs.
3. An antiglare device comprising plates provided with slats, said plates provided with sets of registering tongue receiving apertures, a plurality of spacing elements between said plates, each spacing clement registering with apertures in each set, said spacing element comprising acomparatively broad body with reduced tongues at its ends, and said tongues extending through the registering apertures of each set and bent back upon the plates for fastening the plates together in a spaced position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature,
HARRY L. GORDQN.
