Definitions

  • the articles to be wrapped are' advanced one at a time (by a continuouslymoving conveyor) past folding devices which operate to fold a wrapper about each article insuch manner as to form an openended pouch which encloses the forward end, the top and bottom, and the sides of the article, and which projects at its open end beyond the adjacent rear end of the article by an amount sufficient to allow of the pro jecting portion being folded down to complete the wrapping.
  • the articles are advanced along a horizontal support by an endless conveyor provided with upstanding ele-ments (hereinafter referred to as pushers') spaced apart and each adapted to engage the rear end of the article and to push the latter along the'support and between stationary guides which operate to fold a wrapper about the article in the manner described above.
  • the wrapper which is fed across the, path of the conveyor in a plane at right-angles thereto, ⁇ isengaged by the front end of the article and carried forward thereby past the guides aforesaid which perform the folding operations.
  • the partially wrapped article is then removed from the conveyor and the operations involved in folding down the open end of the wrapper then performed.
  • the conveyor is of the type provided with pushers adapted to make end-on engagement with the rear faces of the articles, it is essential that the partially wrapped articles be moved ahead of the conveyor at a speed greater than thel linear speed at which the conveyor is driven; otherwise the pushers as they reach the end of trie conveyor path would be liable to foul the projecting portion of the wrapper at the rear end of each article.
  • the present invention is concerned with means for removing the partially wrapped articles from the conveyor and with means for tucking in the sides ofthe projecting portion of the wrapper.
  • a kwrapping machine of the type hereinbefore described and having transfer members operable to engage in turn each partially wrapped article as it approaches the end of the conveyor and to move said article forward in advance of the conveyor, iscliaracterized in that the transfer members aforesaid are' arranged to vengage the rear end face of the partially wrapped article and to push the latter forward clear of the conveyor.
  • YAn advantage of the arrangement en bodying this invention is that the action of the transfer members (which malte a positive end-on engagement 'with each article) is independent of small variations in the width of the articles on which the zwrapping operations are performed.
  • the movement of the transfer members to engage the aforesaid end face of the partially wrapped article is effected in a direction (e. aslant the path of the cow veyor) such that the transfer nieinbers first engage.

APPARATUS FOR WRAPPING CAB/TONS, BLOCKS, AND SIMILAR ARTICLES IN PAPER OR LIKE IJIATERIAL.
Application filed January 21, 1926, Serial No. 82,812, and in Great Britain January 19,1925.
type in which the articles to be wrapped are' advanced one at a time (by a continuouslymoving conveyor) past folding devices which operate to fold a wrapper about each article insuch manner as to form an openended pouch which encloses the forward end, the top and bottom, and the sides of the article, and which projects at its open end beyond the adjacent rear end of the article by an amount sufficient to allow of the pro jecting portion being folded down to complete the wrapping.
In a typical machine of the above class the articles are advanced along a horizontal support by an endless conveyor provided with upstanding ele-ments (hereinafter referred to as pushers') spaced apart and each adapted to engage the rear end of the article and to push the latter along the'support and between stationary guides which operate to fold a wrapper about the article in the manner described above. The wrapper, which is fed across the, path of the conveyor in a plane at right-angles thereto,` isengaged by the front end of the article and carried forward thereby past the guides aforesaid which perform the folding operations. The partially wrapped article is then removed from the conveyor and the operations involved in folding down the open end of the wrapper then performed.
W'hen the conveyor is of the type provided with pushers adapted to make end-on engagement with the rear faces of the articles, it is essential that the partially wrapped articles be moved ahead of the conveyor at a speed greater than thel linear speed at which the conveyor is driven; otherwise the pushers as they reach the end of trie conveyor path would be liable to foul the projecting portion of the wrapper at the rear end of each article.
The present invention is concerned with means for removing the partially wrapped articles from the conveyor and with means for tucking in the sides ofthe projecting portion of the wrapper.
According to the invention a kwrapping machine of the type hereinbefore described and having transfer members operable to engage in turn each partially wrapped article as it approaches the end of the conveyor and to move said article forward in advance of the conveyor, iscliaracterized in that the transfer members aforesaid are' arranged to vengage the rear end face of the partially wrapped article and to push the latter forward clear of the conveyor.
In wrapping apparatus of the type with which this invention is 'concerned it has hitherto been proposed, for the'purpose of advancing the kpartially wrapped articles clear of the conveyor, to employ as transfer members a pair of rollers (havingy tucking elements-carried thereby) driven at a peripheral speed greater than the linear speed of the conveyor and arranged to engage the .sides of the partially wrapped article and by frictional engagement therewith to drag the latter forward clear of theccnveyor.
YAn advantage of the arrangement en bodying this invention is that the action of the transfer members (which malte a positive end-on engagement 'with each article) is independent of small variations in the width of the articles on which the zwrapping operations are performed. I
In the preferred form of the present invention the movement of the transfer members to engage the aforesaid end face of the partially wrapped article is effected in a direction (e. aslant the path of the cow veyor) such that the transfer nieinbers first engage. the sides of the projecting portion of the wrapper and close said sidesagainst the end face of the article, the transfer members thereby yconstituting tucking elements as well as means to' advance the article aheadL of the conveyor. Conveniently the transfer members are located .on opposite. sides respectively of the conveyor and are mounted for reeiprocatory'movement in a horizontal plane, the travel of each member beingsueh 'that it first enters the path of the conveyor (preferably in a slanting direction) then moves said path (during which time while the article is advanced clear of the conveyor.

A similar arraiigement of motion-transmitting members and link-work is provided in connection with the folder-blade which is provided on a bar 52L shewn on the upper portion of Figure 2; the said similar arrangement of members and link-work is shewn on the accompanying drawings, but
` we have not deemed it necessary to number all of the individual elements which coniprise the said similar arrangement.
One form of kconstruction of the aforementioned folding-blades and adjacently vdisposed co-operating members, in accordis shewn in Figtioned bottom- plates 21 and 21, and are ar- Y ranged one on each side of the path along which the articles 17 with their corresponding wrappers 6 are actuated to travel. The said retaining- bars 63 and 63 are adapted to retain an article 17 with its Wrapper 6 Vin the said path whilst the wrapper 6 of the said article 17 is operated on by foldingblades 64 and 64a. c f
lt will be understood that, in the arrangement I am now describing, the foldingblades 64 and 642L are carried respectively on the bars 52 and 52a.
rlhe folding- blades 64 and 64a are respectively provided with gaps or slots 65 and 65a, or are oi bifurcated shape (see Figures 7 and 9) so that the said folding- blades 64 and 64 can be actuated to fold (in a manner to be more particularly described presently) the projecting portions x, ai, of the wrapper 6, on to the end of the article 17, .i
without coming into engagement with the respective adjacently disposed retainingbars 68 and 63a. i* Y The folding-blade 64 is actuable, by means of the toothed bevel-wheel 29, cam

The function ot' the coil-spring 6l on the rod 59 is to impart yieldable pressure on the tolding-lilade 64, whilst a coil-sl'ning similarly arranged in respect of tlie"ifoldingblade 64iL imparts yieldable pressure on the said folding-blade 64, so that, in the event of anyobstruction presenting itself to either or to both of the said folding-blades V64,v
64a, the hereindescribed apparatus can continue to operate without the liability of damage to, or breakage of, the` constituent members thereof.Y
At the/same time as, or as soon as, convenient after, the folding 'of the portions of the wrapper 6 has been effected by Yio the hereinbefore ydescribed operation yof the folding- blades 64 and 64, and whilst the said folding- blades 64 and 64a are retained in engagement with and are. holding the vure `8) and thereby remove or convey the aforesaid pc rtially wrapped article 17, with its wrapper 6, in advance of, and away from engagement with, its corresponding travelimparting pusher 16, to the aforementioned vertically arranged chute. j
kIt may be stated here that, in accordance ,withmy invention, a lip-shaped projection 66 may be provided on each ofthe pushers 16, and adapted to engage with, and afi'ord support to, the.V underside ofthe respective article 17 which is actuated "by its corresponding pusher16 (see Figure l). U
. The ,aforesaid vertical chute comprises a pair of channel-'shaped members 67 and 67a supported respectively, each in a vertical position, on the aforesaid side- frames 1 and 2.
ln yproximity to the lower endof the said vertical chute a` plate 68 is-supported on the upper end of a bar`69. Y
A lever -70 is oscillatably supported on the top spindle 33 and a roller-arm 71, provided with a .roller 72, is oscillatably supported on the bottom spindle. 4 j
lhe bar 69 is connected. by means of a pinV V73 to the free-end of the lever 70, andy by s means of a pin 74 to the free-end of the roller-arm 71. A cam 75, secured to, and
rotatable by meanslof, the shaft 41 imparts suitablyy timed movements to the roller-arm 71, and the bar 69 with the plate 68 is therei byractuated to move up and down through ,a convenient distance.
The folding- blades 64 and 64 are operable (by means of the motion-transmitting members hereinbefore mentioned in connection therewith) to cause the. hereinbefore mentioned partially wrapped article 17 with.V
its corresponding wrapper 6 to pass through an opening 76 provided in the lower portion kof the aforementioned vertical chute, and to deliver the said article 17 and its partially v.folded wrapper' 6 yon to the plate 68 vwhich at this time occupies a lowered position relatively to the said vertical chute.
The folding-blades 64 and 64L retain the Y said article 17 with its wrapper 6 for a Vconsurface of the partially wrapped article 17, up'and on to the end of the article 17, (see Figure 12).
vThe said folding-blade 77 is provided on, or is secured to, the free-end of a lever 7 8 extending` from a boss 7 9 which isoscillatably supported ,on the spindle 33. A roller- -arm 8O extends from the boss 7 9, and is provided with a roller81. A cam 82, secured to, and `rotatable by means of, the shaft 41 imparts suitably timed movements to vthe roller-arm 80, and thereby to the lever-78 and folding-blade 77. v
In proximity to the lower end of the aforesaid vertical chute a pair of sets of package-retaining elements are provided,
The plate 68 is actuated by the motioniimparting members, already mentioned in connection therewith, to move in an upward direction and thereby. pushv the aforesaid partially wrapped article 17 with its wrapper6, past and above the package retaining elements. e Y
The said upward movement of the said partially wrapped articley 17 and wrapper 6, causes the lower edges 94 and 94a of the respective channel-shaped members 67v and 67a v(see Figures 12 and 13) rtocoact with the wrapper y6 to yfoldaportion of the wrapper 6 which is adjacent to the upperk surface of kthe partially wrapped `article17 in the vertical chute, lon, to these portions of the' wrapper v6 which have been folded already (by the vmeans and in they manner herein set forth) on tothe end of the article 17 so that the said article 17 with its wrapper 6 will be caused thereby to appear as shewn in Figure 4. e A modified construction of the said folding-blades and adjacently disposed members, also in accordance with my invention, is shewn in Figures 10 and 11. These folding blades and associated parts are adapted to replace the blades 64 and 64a.
A. pair of retaining` elements are arranged inl respect of each side of the herein before mentioned path 'of travel of the articles 17. i
'One pair of the said retaining elements and a corresponding folding-blade are operably provided in proximity to the channel-shaped member 67 of the. vertical chute and are shewn in the said Figures 10 and 1-1; a similar pair of retaining elements and a corresponding and similar foldingblade are operably provided in proximity to the channel-shaped member 67, but are not shewn on the accompanying drawings.
Extension arms 95 and 96 are provided on the channel-shaped member 67.
Retaining elements 97 and98 are respectively support-ed, iny pivotal mann-er by pins 99 and 100 on the fextension arms 95 and 96 and are parallel to the path of movement of the article to be wrapped. A spring 1011s arranged on ythe pin 99, and yieldably actuates the retaining element 97 to move ing element 98 in a similar manner.
The retaining elements 97 and 98 and the aforenientioned corresponding pair of retaining elements which are provided in respect of the channel-shaped member 67a are adapted to retainthe aforesaid article 17 with its corresponding wrapper 6 in the aforementioned rectilinear path of travel whilst the Isaid article 17 and its wrapper 6 are operated on by the folding-blade 103 and thesimilar folding-bladewhich operates in proximity to the channel-shaped member 67a to fold or tuck in the parts XX'shown in Figure 14.
' Gaps 105 are provided in conveniently arranged positions in the retaining` elements 97 and 98 in order to allow the folding-blade 103 toY come into, and withdraw from, operative engagement with the aforesaid article 17 and corresponding wrapper 6. v
j vIt will be understood that the shank-piece 1-04`of the folding blade 103 can freely pass to and fro in the space between-the edges yof ythe respective retaining elements 97 'and 98,
and the spring actuated and yieldable man- Y ner in which the said-retaining elements 97 and 98 are supported on their respective pins allows the folding-blade 103 to be withdrawn fromengageinent withthe'said wrapper G land article 17 yeven if, for any reason, the
folding-blade 103 is not, at the particular ing blade 64.
