This invention relates to a new and im- 'proved rolllng mill construction and more' particularly to a rolling mill housin adapted for merchant mills, rod in-ills an other continuous mills. v o In the housings for such rol`l`s,i it is necessary to provide for Verticalf adjustment ofthe bottom roll, for support of the .upper roll, for lateral or axial `adjustment of both iii rolls, and further to provid'e for an upper bearing for the upper roll' and for convenient means for removing the rolls. Common means for Vertical adjustment ofthe bottom roll comp'rise wedges or'jacks operated by means of shafts extending upwardly through the housin'g. In case of the jack, it is necessary that each side of the housing be adjusted sep'rately. To accomplish this adjustment, it is necessary that the' operator .go upon both sides of the housing, and to go upon the inside of the milll theoperator must climb over and gobetween the moving parts and the drive gearing, which is quite dangerous. According to myinvention, the 'Vertical adjustment of the bottom 'roll is accomplished by means of completely enclosed jacks which are both operable from the same side of the housing which side is,
of course, the outside of the mill.
The general method of supporting the upper roll consists in four hang bolts extending through the housing. These bolts complicate the construction-and are difficult in adjustment. Furthe'r; the upper bearing for the upper roll usually comprises a casting held in-place by two'heavy head screws. In my improved construction the top' roll is supported upon an element which is carried upon levers pivotediii the housing. The top bearing'consists of a housing cap. whichis laterally movable into and out of horizontally extending recesses in-the housing. This presents a'much more easily adjustableconstruction than the-usual one, and
one which is composed of but few ar'ts, and
. which simplifies the necessary castings i It is necessary to provide lateral or axial adjustment of the rolls. In constructions' heretofore `in use, it vhas been necessary to make these adjustments from both the inside and theJ outside of the mill. Accordin to my invention, these adjustments are botv made from the outsideof the mill which results in a saving in time and 'avoids the necessity. for the o erator Climbing over tov the dangerous e of the mill.
It is an object "of'thepresent invention to provide a new and improved rolling mill construction comprising a housing having Vertical adjustment of the bottom roll entirely operable `from the' outside of the mill.
It is a further object to provide a construction providing a simple and readily adjustable support for the upper roll.
It is an additional object .to provide a 05 housing cap serving as an upperbearing 'for the upper roll which 'cap is vreadily removable and is retained in place without'l necessity for bolts and nuts. i
lit is also an object to provide a construci I tion having means for the lateral or axial' Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanyingdrawino's2 in which- .figura proved housing construction;
Figure 2 is a `ifrag'rnen'tary side' `elevation of the housing; and i Figure 3 is a section taken online 3-3- of -figure 1. o
The housing' comprises he base portion 7 and the side standards 8 and 9. The lower 1'oll'10 has the roll necks 11V and '12 fitting in. the opposite sides of the housing. As' shown in io'ure 1, the neck'll rests upon bearing 13 which bearing is supported upon block 14. J
The upper roll 15. is provided with roll necks 16 and 17. As shown in Figure 1, the vroll neck 16 rests upon block 18 which latter is supported in element 19.V The ends of this element- 19 are supported upon the inner end of the levers 20, these levers being'pivoted 5 f thrust upon the lcap tends to draw the stand- 11 ards together rather than to separate them. The yoke .'28 has the lugs 29 bearing l is an end elevation of my ini- 80 against the outer face of the bearing block 13. The bolts 30 and 31 extend through the housing standards and are provided at their outer ends with nuts bearing against the yoke 28'. I have shown in Figure 2 a similar yoke 28 provided with lugs 29' bearying against the bearing block 13' which rests upon the block 14 which is elevated by a screw jack indicated 4in broken lines in Figure 1. Both ends of the lower roll are supported in this manner, and the two screw jaeks are operated by the transverse shafts having the squared ends 40 and 4,3 shown in Figure 1. N
In .the use of my construction, the lowei` roll may be vertically adjusted by means of the rotation of the two jacks whlch rotation is accomplished by fitting suitableV cranks to the squared portions 40 and 43. This adjust-ment is carried out entirely from the same side of the housing which side, of course, would bc the outside of the mill.
The Vertical movement of the upper roll so as to bring its bcai'ing to property thrust against' the housing cap is accomplished by means of the screws 23. Downward movemcnt of these serews moves the outer ends of the levers 20 downwardly, thus lifting the inner ends and consequently lifting the element 19 and with it the roll and its upper bearing.
The houslng` cap 25 is readily rcn'iovable 'by a lateral movement in the 'recesses 26 sutlicient to bring` it clear of the recesscs. Latcral movement of the bearlngV members 13 and 13' is accomplished by corresponding later-al adjustment of the yokes which bear.
against these members. The yoke 28 is adjusted by loosening or tightening the nuts upon the-bolts 30 and 31. The adjustment of the bearing member 13'` is accomplished by moving the yoke 28 through loosening or `tightening the nuts 34. VVhile these adjustments only operate to positively move the bearing blocks inwardly, it willbe understood that since these blocks bear against the roll adj acent the roll neck, inward movement of one block will accomplish `any necessary outward movement of the opposite block when the requisite nuts are loosened to permit such movement.
My constructon is relatively simple and is adapted to permit rapld adjustment and assembly of the several parts. The Verticaladjustment of the lower roll and the lateral adjustment of both rolls ares all accomplished from the outside of the mill which results in a considerable saving in time and it avoids the dangerous work upon the inside of the mill. My improved honsing cap greatly simplifies the construction and ,makes it possible to more rapidly remove the .rolls when necessary. i
The embodiment shown is' to be under- Stood as illustrative only as I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made to adapt my construction to varying uses. It is my intention to cover all such modifications coming within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim: I
rolling millconstruction comprising a housing, a roll having necks supported in the housing, supporting bearings for a roll neck adapte'd to bear against the roll end to limit its axialmovement, a yoke engagi'ng each bearing at one end, t'hc yokes engaging the bearings at points thcreof on opposite HENRY w. WILSON.
