This invention relates to wrenches of the flexible j aw type, and the said invention has for anobject the. provision of a flexible Carrier adapted to 'embrace an element to be turned, the said flexible element being associated with novel means for drawlng or Carrying the ends toward each other in Order that the 'fiexible wrench may be drawn tightly against the object 'which it is to Operateor-turn.
It is a further object ,of thisinvention to provide a fiexible element having friction producing means which will serve to securewrench is'manipulated.
It is a -stillfurther object :of this invention to Produce a flexible wrench'of the character indicated having interchangeableobject wrench may operate in conjunction with metalwhose surface need not be guarded from gripping marks, 'and' also by interchanging the flexible gripping elements the said wrench may O'perate 'in conjunction with metal rings or nuts having high finish, without liability of marring the surface thereoi' a It is a still further Object of'this invention to produce a wrench of the character indicated in which the gripping rings may be expeditiously manipulated for applying them to or, removing them from the object to be turned, and in which the said gripping elementsmay be expe'ditiously Changed for producing the difierent results stated.
With the foregoing and Other objects in view, the invention consists in'the details of construction, and ln the arrangement andj 'combination of parts .to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed In describing the nventlon ln detail, re-
said wrench';
Figure 3 illustrates a view of a modified clamping ring;
Figure 4: illustrates a view inside elevat-ion 'of a fragment of the wrench; and
Figure 5 llustrates a section taken On a the jaws to embraces;
parts 'in the several views, and in line .5-; 5 between the spring and the' latch,
looking in the direction of the handle."
In these drawings, 5 and 6 denote the'ends of pliers or 'tong-lke structures, having' handles 7 and 8, respectively, that are manipulated for causing the ends 5 and 6 to'apq proach or recede with relatio'n-'to' eaclrrother.
The handles 7 and' 8 are oscillatable on a pivotA. j
The elements 5 and 6 each has a recess such as 10, through whchpins 1 1 and 12 extend, respectvelyg The fiexible 'jaw or and it preferably terminates in eyes or loops band 13 may' be' any 'appropriate length V ly hold the object to be turned while the 14, through which'the pinsll and 12 exte'nd, for anchoring the fleXible band to the members 5 and 6. Preferably, the fleXible ele'ment has a pluralitytof jaws 15 secured to it, and these jaws 'have serrated surfaces 16 which are adapted to-frictionally engage .the object 'to 'be turned. The jaws, in' the present embodiment of the inventon, have flanges 17 and 18 at their ends and fastenngs 19, such as rivets or the like, extend through the flanges and through the fleXible band whereby they are held in assembled re- A lation to each other.
It will follow from an inspection of the drawing and from the foregoin'g description that as the handles are manipulated for.
pressingthe 'members 5 andtoward each Other, the flexible band will be contracted, and the: flexible band is capable of movement, within predeterrnined range, to cause en-gage-an object which the band As a means itor holdingthe handles at ydifierent 'pOsi-tions, the, handle 7 ;has a segmental 'armQOsecured to it, the' said arm passing'through *an aperture' 21. One edge Of'tl'le arm is provided with serrations 22 that are engaged by a detent23 for holding theghandles at different positions of adjustmentstud 24 anchored in the handleand a spring 25 is alsomounted onnthe stud interposed betweenthe 'detent and the handle 8, the said ;spring being operative to force the detent into engagement with the arm 20. r As here shown, the'spring has a slot 26 in its' end, whiohreceives the arm;20, and the detent 23 likewise 'has a slot 27 in its end to receive the said arm, (so that when the handle 8 is'movd the arm 20 acts 'as a The detent s secured On a bolt Ol' flexble band comprises a metal Core, 28 in the nature of a Wire and it has l Ops 29 and 80 atits ends, XVhiChRG intended t'oreceive the pins 11 and 12 When the modified 'can'ljping' ring is to he'substituted fer the 'naming' eleinent shown in Fig. 1. In this lnodi fied construction, the. Wire Or metal Core ''s Covered by a rubber sheathing 31 Which tends to grip against the sufaces of highly finished metal parts OI' the like, so that the manipulation of the WrenCh 'does not ln ure the surfaces *of the said parts.
