W. R. HART PLAYING BALL COVER Filed Nov. 12, 1925 Inventor.-
1y I 71mm 3*M Patented Oct. 19, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. HART, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE A. REACH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed November My present invention relates to a playing ball covering, such playing balls being of the football, soccer ball, volley ball, Rugby football, basketball, striking bag, play 5 grormd ball, water pool balls, and the like.
lhe principal object of the invention is the provision of a covering for such a ball which will make a lighter ball than is at present in use, which will add to its elasticity or rebound quality, which will be of a superior strength, and which will allow the ball to hold and retain its shape for a much longer period of time. Obviously, the balls made of the covering of this invention may be inflated, stull'ed, wrapped, or otherwise filled, as desired.
To this end my invention consists in the provision of two layers of leather with an intermediate layer of fabric, located between the two leather plies, and cementing, fastening, or adhering the said fabric in place.
I have illustrated in the accompanying drawing, a preferred form of the invention, although obviously I do not wish to be limited to the exact form or material shown.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a foot-- ball made of the covering of this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of one sector showing the structure more in detail.
Referring now with particularity to the drawing, I have shown the outside leather ply at 1, and an inside leather ply at 2, with an intermediate layer of fabric at 3, suitably secured therein by any desired manner. I have found that these three lalninations may be readily cemented together.
As shown in the illustration the layer 1 PLAYING-BALL COVER.
12, 1925. Serial No. 68,567.
forms the outer covering of the football, and the lay J 2 the inner layer lying next to the w bladder in balls in which a bladder is used.
The layer 3 is preferably of fabric although, it may take the form of a rubberized fabric.
Sheets of this composite material may be out to any desired form and then put together to form the ball structure, as is the usual case, the composite material being handled as a single sheet.
The composite covering thus described will not chafe the bladder, where bladders are used, the layers will not creep upon each other, and to all intents and purposes it forms a unitary structure which has qualities not found in a single or several plies of leather, or even leather and fabric without the arrangement of leather and fabric being in the form shown.
In the claims where I have described the object as a playing ball, it is to be understood that this also covers such an article as a striking bag, the word ball being used for lack of a better term.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A covering for a playing ball comprising a plurality of plies of leather, and an intermediate sheet of fabric held therebetween.
2. A covering for a playing ball compris- 70 ing two plies of leather, and an intermediate sheet of fabric cemented on each of its sides to the overand under-lying leather plies.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature.
WVILLIAM It. HART.
