This invention relates generally to papermaking apparatus, and in particular toapparatus for cleaning and scraping the sur face of a revolving roll, cylinder, or the like; and more particularly to apparatus of the character commonly termed a doctor.
One of the principal objects of-this invention is to provide apparatus of this character which is of simple construction, more effective in operation, and in which the parts subject to wear may be easily and quickly replaced.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

As illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is disclosed in the drawing a doctor comprising, generally a body portion 10 and a removable blade portion 11. The blade 11 cooperates with the surfaceof a rotatable roll 12, which may be a drying cylinder, press roll, or other roll. The doctor is mounted upon suitable supporting frame work indicated at 14, which frame-Work may also support the roll 12, the construction of the bearing supports of this roll and the sup porting frame-work being of conventional character and not illustrated in detail. The doctor is shown as pivotally mounted upon the supporting frame-work, suitable bearing brackets 15 bolted to the frame-work 14 serv-,-

The doctor is free to swing about its pivotal mounting, and as shown the blade .portion 11- is held against the surface of the roll 12 by the weight of the parts. It is obvious that other types of mounting for the doctor can be employed in accordance with this invention, and that set-screws or other means can be provided in association with the supporting frame-work to maintain the blade of the doctor against the roll with a positive force other than that of its own weight, as is well known.

The blade portion 11 isadapted for detachable posi tioning within the groove 30 and is provided with a transversely extending reinforcing strip 33 rigidly fastened to the blade portion by a number of screws or bolts indicated at 34 having loosely fit withinthis groove; As shown the channel 31 struction is such that the reinforcing strip provides a lower flat surface which is adapted to cooperate with the upper surface of the plate member 24, while the projections channel thus forms a forwardly and downwardly projecting lip portion indicated at 32 in the block 28, whichlip portion cooperates with the projections 35 to prevent out of'engagement with the body portion.
The blade portion 11 maybe of any suitable as sufiicieutflexibility for desired operation is obtained. As shown the blade portion comprises a flexible metal member 40 which is fastened at one edge to the body portion 10 and at .its other edge is riveted to the blade portion proper or scraper 41 which actually contacts during operation with the roll. This construction serves to prevent the blade port ion from sliding endwise out of operative position. In actual practice. a clearance is provided between the. heads 35 of the attaching means 3i to permit the ready insertion of the blade portion. and the desired rigidity of the parts in operative position is obtained by the weight of the body portion pressing down upon the inserted blade portion.
\Vhen it is desired to replace the blade of the doctor, it is only necessary to unscrew and remove the set-screws 45 and to withdraw the blade portion 11 endwise from its interfitting engagement with the body portion 10. A single operator can conveniently and easily do this by removin the set-screws 45, and then withdrawing the blade portion. lVith this construction, the heavy portion of the doctor is permanently secured to its mounting and the replacement of the blade can be effected without disturbing this mounting. The removable portion of the doctor is relatively light and can be conveniently handled by a single operator. During endwise removal of the blade portion, the end opposite that which is being carried by the operator is supported and guided by its inter-fitting engagement with the body portion.
Upon replacement of the blade portion of the doctor, the operation is merely the opposite of that described for removal. The blade portion is supported so that its cooperating interfitting surface or projection may be inserted endwise within the cooperating groove within the body portion, the blade portion is then moved endwise into operative position, and the set-screws inserted in place.
Preferably the blade portion is constructed in replaceable units, so that an additional or auxiliary blade portion may be readily kept on hand for replacement purposes. Thus when an old blade portion is removed, a new blade portion can be immediately inserted in position, the entire operation requiring only a few minutes, whereby the necessity of a long shut-down of the machine is avoided.
The present construction of doctor operates more effectively in actual use in that the tendency of the doctor to vibrate excessively or chatter during operation is effectively overcome.
lVhile the form of ap aratus herein described constitutes a pre erred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A doctor of the character described comprising a body portion, and a separate blade portion having interlocking engagement with and detachably connected to said body portion.
2. A doctor of the character described comprising a metal plate body portion, and a separate relatively light flexible blade portion having interlocking engagement with said body portion to prevent 't'rontwise disengagement, said blade portion being detachably connected to said body portion.
3. A doctor of the character described comprising a body portion, a blade portion, said body and blade portions having cooperating interfitting and interlocking surfaces whereby said portions may be assembled in operative position, and means for detachably connecting said portions in said operative position.
4. A doctor of the character described comprising a body portion, a blade portion, one of said portions having a transversely extending groove therein, a cooperating projection formed on said other portion, whereby said portions may be moved relatively to each other endwise into interfitting engagement, and means for detachably connecting said portions together in said interfitting engagement.
5. A doctor of the character described comprising a metal plate member, a reinforcing block extending transversely of said late member and attached thereto, said lock having a transversely extending groove formed along the length thereof; a separate blade portion, a projection on said blade portion adapted to be received within said groove to prevent the blade portion from sliding forwardly out of said groove but permitting said blade portion to be moved endwise into operative position within said groove, and means for detachably connecting the blade portion to the body portion in said operative position.
6. A doctor of the character described comprising a metal plate member, a reinforcing block extending transversely of said plate member and attached thereto, said block having a transversely extending groove formed along the length thereof with a U-shaped channel in one face thereof; a separate blade portion, a transversely extending reinforcing strip, and projecting attaching means connecting said reinforcing strip to said blade portion, said blade portion being adapted to be moved endwisc into operative position within said groove with said reinforcing strip adjacent the said plate member, and said projecting attaching means extending within said Ushaped channel to prevent the blade portion from sliding forward- 1y out of said groove, and means for detachably connecting the blade portion in said operative position.
7. A doctor of the character described comprising a metal plate body portion, a flexible blade portion connected to said body portion adjacent the front end of said body portion,
and a rigid transversely extending reinforcing bar substantially thicker than said metal plate portion attached to said metal platel erative position relative to said body por tion, said parts having cooperating uiding surfaces adapted to direct said bla e portion into proper operative position relative to said body portion, and means for detach tiveposition.
