WALTER E. HUDSON, OF AMAGANSETT, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR T0' HUDSON HEATING SYSTEMS, INC.,A OF NEW YORK, N. Y., CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
HEATING UNIT.
Application filed. March 5, 1924. Serial No. 697,030.
This invention relatesv to iinprovcn'ieiits in electrically energized heating units particularly of a type employed in boiler equipments for creating hot-water for heating or general uses or for generating steam for heating or other purposes.
The object of this invention is to provide an electrically 'energizedheating unit of the character described which is readily adjusted or removed from the boiler and which is constructed to withstand maximum electrical currents and maximum heat without destruc tion to the elements making up the unit. A A further object is to provide an electrically energized heating unit `ot the type described which embodies a means for distributing heat over the endsurfaces or heads of a boiler, of which the unit is a part, thereby distributing the heat generated by the heating unit and providing an apparatus which operates with a high degree of efficiency.
One form of apparatus embodying my insheet of drawings in which- Figure 1, is a side view of the heating unit showing the jacket of same partly broken away;
Figure 2, is a longitudinal section through center of same;
Figure 3, is an elevation, partly in section of aV boiler showing the application of the said heating unit. 4
Throughout the drawings like reference characters indicate like parts. 2 is a4 tube formed of any suitable refractory and electrically insulating material such as asbestos or a compound thereof. Over the ends of this tube are placed cylindrical heads or caps 1, l, of considerably larger external diameter, thereby forming a spool on which an electric conductor ot high resistance, such as the thin ribbon 4, may be spirally wound with the ends extending through perforations 3, 3, in the caps, or spool heads 1, 1. The coil l is then 'covered by a layer 5 of plastic refractory and electrically insulating material, which may be a composition of alundum and crystalon, and the` same baked or fused" in position as shown in Fig, 2. This layer forms a protection from the atmosphere for the conductors 4 by hermetically sealing them and also keeps the c'oils'thereof spaced apart and'in position so that no short circuit may occur in the coils, nor any ground contact with an exterior conducting material.
other approved material.
. tube and the completed spool built thereon as above described.
This heating unit is particularly designed for use in tubular boilers or water heaters such as shown generally at 7 in Fig. 3 wherein 8, 8, are the heads or tube sheets into which the ends ofrtubes 6, 6, are flanged in the usual way. 9 is the usual steam drum,10 a twin discharge or steam pipe, and 11 the return Water pipe connected to the bottom of the boiler by nipples 12, 12. The spool heads 1, 1, are made of a size to fit closely into the ends of the boiler tubes 6, 6, thereby forming closed annular air spaces in each boiler tube around the spool located therein.
The cross channels 2, provide a means of communication between the interior of the spool and tube 2, and compartments 13, formed at the boiler heads, by means of the cover plate 14, which may be'of asbestos or Any ysuitable insulating material, as 15 and 16, may be pro- Avided around the boiler and over the ends thereof as'. indicated in Figure 3.
The spool heads 1, 1, are allowed to pro- .ject into air 'spaces 13, 13, to help heat the air therein and also to bring the passages 2', 2', in communication with said spaces. When current is passed through coils 4, they become intensely heated. This heat is absorbed by the spools in which the coils are embedded and is,in turn,.absorbed from the spools by 'the air circulating around them in boiler tubes 6, and around the spool heads in space 13, and through the interiors of the spools and passages 2, 2. The heat thus absorbed by the air is then evenly distributed to the water in the boiler through tube walls 6, 6,
employed in this invention Without departing from the spirit of same and it is not intended to limit the said invention to the particular iorm shown.
What is claimed l. As a new article of manufacture an electric heating unit comprising a spool of refractory materials having heads of greater diameter than the intermediate portions of said spool, and in which latter portion a coil of high resistance wire is embedded, the heads of said spool having diametrically arranged air passageways communicating with the interior thereof.
2. As a new article of manufacture an electric heating unit comprising a spool ot refractory materials having heads of greater diameter than the intermediate portions ot said spool, and in which latter portion a coil of high resistance Wire isl embedded.l` the heads of said spool having diametrically arranged air passageways communicating With the interior thereof and of the same bore as said interior.
3. A hollow spool of refractory material adapted to support a coil of electric Wire, which spool has end caps of larger diameter than that of the body of said spool provided with diametrically arranged air passageways in said cap portions of the larger diameter communicating with the interior of said spool.
et. An electric heating unit comprising, in combination, a tube of refractory material, cnd caps for said tube of considerably larger exterior diameter than said ltube and provided with radial passageways connecting with the interior of said tube, a coil of high resistance wire Wound on said tube, and a protecting shell of refractory material enveloping said coil, said shell being of less exterior diameter than said caps.
5. A combination such as set forth in claim in which the ends of the conductor forming said coil project through .said end caps.
