LOUIS J'. FREUNDT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINQIS, ASSIGNOR Ti) AMERICAN CAN COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. K, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED INTERXGR COLLAR CAN AND PAIL.
Application filed Januaryfl, 19%.
My present invention relates to interior collar cans adapted to be opened by removal of a side tearing strip and has. for a principal object the provision of means whereby said container may be converted into a pail after removal of the tearing strip.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for detachably carrying a bailupon an end of the container during shipment and prior to the time when it is re quired for use. I
While, from certain aspects of the invention, the present construction is intended to provide a' toy for use by children after the container has been emptied of its contents, it will be readily appreciated that it also may be adaptable to other and perhaps more important commercial. usages, such, for example, as a paint bucket, or the like.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a. preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevational view, partially broken away and shown in section, of a container in which my invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container with the bail applied after the tearing strip and cover have been removed;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken through the collar after the tearing strip and cover have been removed;
Fig. 4 is a top plan View; and
5 is an enlarged partial section taken sul'istantially on the line 5-5 in Fig. 3.
The container body 21 is closed by means of a permanently attached cover 22, which preferably is constructed to form an upstanding margin, and is provided with a separate interior collar member 23 beaded to said body, as indicated at 24. The body is provided with a side tearing strip, set off by score lines 25 and 26, said tearing strip being provided with an extended tongue 27 adapted to be engaged by a key, or otherwise, for tearing away the strip.
The overlapped ends 28 and 29 of the collar 23are, in the present instance, connected together by integral rivets 31 formed by perforatingthe material of said ends. A perforation 32 is provided in the collar 23, op-
Serial No. 685,108
is 1 that relatively slight indentations 35 are suflicient to hold it in place. These indentations may be readily formed mechanically and it will, of course, be understood that, if desired, the entire sear-n could be crimped inwardly, or, from the'broader aspect of the invention, said bail could be detachably held in place bv any convenient expedient.
it is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the sp' it and scope of the invention,
or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the term hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
l. A. container, comprising a body provided with a side tearing-strip, and an in ternal collar secured to the body and extend ing across'said tearing strip, said collar being provided with opposite perforations adapted to receive the ends of a bail, said perforations being covered by the body until said strip removed.
A container, comprising a body provided with side tearing strip, and an internal collar secured to the body and extending across said tearing strip, said collar being provided with means for receiving the ends of a bail, said means being located at the inner side of the tearing strip.
3. A container, comprising a body provided with a side tearing strip, an internal collar secured to the body and adapted to be exposed by removal of said tearing strip, said collar being provided with opposite perforations adapted to receive the ends of a bail, and a bail detaehably secured to the end of the container and adapted to be applied to iaptcd to expand against the seam 36 so said collar after removal of the end by tearin away said strip, said perforations being covered by the tearing strip and the can made tight until the strip is removed and said holes exposed for application of the bail.
4. A container, COIHPIlSiD' a bodyprovided with a side tearing strip, an internal collar secured to the body and adapted to be exposed by removal of said tearing strip, said collar being provided with opposite perforations adapted to receive the, ends or" a bail, and a bail detachably secured to the end of the container andvadapted to be applied toeaid collar after removal of the e -.l by tearing away s: id strip, one of said perforations being in the portien ot the collar in which the ends thereoff are overlapped, said perforations forming a rivet securing said ends together i 5. A; container, comprising a i)0(' ends permanently secured thereto, semi collar, or neck member, di I b: body and being provided ns ceive the ends of a bail, a tearing strip tori around the body so as to cover said bail-re ceiving means, and a bail det chably carri A; by one of the ends and adapted to be removed and applied to said collar to form a pail after the container has been opened by removal of said tearing strip.
6. A container, comprising a body having @lld'IHQll'lbGlS secured thereto, a separatecollar member secured within the body and proided with means for receiving the ends of a ball, and a bail detachably carried by one of said ends, said bail being held in place means fer attaching thereto the ends of a bail,
and a bail the ends or" which are adapted for attachment, the body being constructed 71th an )standin margin, and tlllfhill bein removabl y arranged within said margin,
and the latter being suitably bent over the bail tc'detachably confine it to the body.
