Description
w. m.. TREAD WAY.
Gun-Sight. N0. 168,941. PatentedOCt-19J875.
O L THOGRAPHER ASHINGTON D 0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. TREADWAY, OF PORT HENRY, NEW YORK IMPROVEMENT IN GUN-SIGHTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [68,94l, dated October 19, 1875; application filed October 2, 1875. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. TREAD- WAY, of Port Henry, Essex county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Rifle- Sight, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 represents a rifle-barrel with my improved level for rifle-sights attached, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the barrel on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, showing a side view of the level.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved sight to be used on rifles for targetshooting, by which, when properly adjusted, a betteraim is obtained, as the rifle may be held at the same elevation at every shot.
The invention consists of an adjustable spirit-level, that is placed across the rifle between the sights.
In the drawing, A represents the barrel of a rifle, and B a level, which is supported on suitable bearings G, and applied across the barrel by a band, D, that encircles and fits the barrel. The level B slides along the barrel and may be adjusted at any point between the sights by a set-screw, E, or any other fastening device.
The level is set according to the distance to be shot at, the greater elevation of the sight requiring the moving forward, a lesser-elevation the moving backward, of the level,.which is placed between the sights so as to hide the pin-ball, producin g thereby the leveling of the rifle simultaneously with the aiming, so that the exact elevation of the same at every shot, and thereby closer shooting, is obtained. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improvement in rifle-sights, the combination, with the barrel of a rifle or gun, of a spirit orother level, adjustable thereon betweenthe sights, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM MILLER TREADWAY.
