sarnnnnm rasrmrm "Application Med December 20, 1934. Serial No. 757,160.
This invention aims to provide an improved separable fastener.
In the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of the fastener showing underlying parts in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, being partly in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the socket;
Fig. 4 is an elevation view of the studengaging part of the socket before it is seecured to a support; and I Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the attaching part of the socket.
eferring to the drawings, I have shown a snap fastener which may be used as a curtain fastener, glove fastener or the like.
The stud as illustrated is secured to a rigid support 1 by the usual attaching screw 2 and presents a socket-engaging head 3, a neck 4 and base portion 5 as besti lustrated in Fig. 2.
The socket includes a stud-engaging part pressed from a single piece of metal and presenting a plurality of contractible and expansible stud-engaging fingers 6 havmg 1nwardly bent, reversely bent neck-engaging portions 7 formed substantially as shown and described in the co ending application of Moses F. Carr, Seria No. 757,161, filed herewith.
The stud-engaging part also presents, at its outer periphery, an anvil ortion 8 and clench port-ion 9, as illustrated 1n Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The stud-engaging part, as illustrated, is located entirely beyond the inner face of its carrying fabric 10 and is secured thereto without cutting a hole in the fabric as is the usual practice in connection with many other known makes of snap fasteners. In this instance, I have shown in (Fig.2) the studreceiving part of the socket located at the inner face of the fabric 10 and secured thereto by a plurality of attaching prongs 11 which are presented by a front plate 12. The front plate is located at the outer face of the fabric 10 and the prongs 11 pass through the fabric and are bent outwardly against the clench portion 9 by the anvil portion 8, thereby securing the socket to the fabric 10.
The stud-engaging fingers 6 extend directly from the base portion 13 of the stud-engaging part, away from the flexible carrying medium so as to provide for reception of the head of the stud which, when engaged with the socket, does not extend beyond the inner face of the carrying medium.
While have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I have done so for purposes of clarification and not for limitation, my invention being best defined in the following claims.
Claims:
1. A fastener socket comprising a onepiece body portion having at its outer periphery prong-receiving and clenching means and a plurality of contractible and expansible stud-engaging portions extending in one direction only, that direction being away from said bod portion and an attaching plate located at t e outer face of a flexible socket-carrying medium, said plate presenting a plurality of attaching prongs adapted to pierce the carrying medium for engagement with said prong-receiving and clenching means presented by the body portion at the inner face of the carrying medium, thereby to secure the socket to the socket-carrying medium.
2. A fastener socket comprising a studengaging part located at the inner face of a flexible carrying medium and presenting a plurality of resilient stud-engaging fingers extending away from the carrying medium, receiving and clenching means formed at the outer periphery of said stud-engaging part and an attaching plate located at the outer face of the carrying medium, said attaching plate presenting a plurality of prongs passing through the carrying medium and engaging the clenching means to secure said stud-engaging part to the carrying medium.
. 3. A fastener installation comprising a socket having a base portion attached to a socket-carrying medium, 'a single tubular stud-receiving portion of substantial length extending from said base portion and located entirely beyond the inner face of the carrying medium, said tubular stud-receiving portion being divided by a number of slits which ill occurring along lines passing between the ends of the slits in the base portion and neckengaging jaw portions located at the free ends of said fingers.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification. I
FRED S. CARR.
