Application filed October 19, 1928: Serial No. 142,658.
This invention relates particularly to door latches.
It is one object of my invention to provide a door fastening mechanism rendered operative or inoperative through manipulation of the door handle.
It is another object of the invention to provide a door fastening means wherein the dead bolt is eliminated and a handle operated latch bolt provided and wherein means is provided for fastening or unfastening the latch bolt by movement of a handle longitudinally of its axis.
It is still another object of my invention to provide a device of the character indicated wherein means is provided for preventing access to and movement of the handle from the side of the door opposite to that upon which it is mounted.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the character indicated that may be readily applied to standard member latches without the necessity of altering any of the latch bolt operating mechanism permanently assembled in the latch bolt casing.
Finally it is an object of the invention to provide a simple, economical and highly efiicient means for fastening and unfastening a latch bolt through a sliding movement of one of its operating pins, the fastening movement being inwardly toward the said.

Referring more particularly to the draw the reference characters 2 and 3 and the parts inserted therebetween, therefore a detailed description of said parts is not made.
The outer side of the door 1 is indicated by 'the letter A and the inner side by the letter B.
The outer handle or knob is shown at 5 having the bolt operating spindle member thereof as shown and spaced back a distance from its end.
A plate 10is mounted on the door 1 in concentric relation to the spindle member 6 and provided with an orifice 11 through -which the spindle member passes. The

The inner handle or knob is shown at 13 and fitted with the latch bolt operating spindle member 14 in the usual manner, the said knob having a slot 15 extending diametrically across the face of its shank por-.
tion as shown. This spindle member 14 is also fitted with a pin 16 extending a distance from opposite sides thereof and spacedv back a distance from its inner end. The said inner end of the spindle member 14 carries an extension 17 adapted to slidably engage the socket 7 in spindle member 6 and provided with a slot 18 through which pin 8 passes.
At 19 is shown a plate mounted on door 1 in concentric relation to the spindle member 14 and provided with an orifice 20'through which said spindle member passes. This plate 19 is provided with an outwardly extending annular flange 21 adapted to receive the slotted end of the knob 13 and has lugs 22 formed thereon diametrically opposite to each other and adapted to engage the slot 15 in knob 13. The inner escutcheon is shown at 23.
In assembling the device the two latch-bar operating spindle members 6 and 14 may be, joined by inserting pin 17 in socket- 7 and then inserting the pin 8 through slot 18. The pin 9 having been inserted in spindle member 6 the assembled parts may be passed through the socket 4 and the pin 16 inserted in spindle member 14. The parts 10 and 12 may now be secured in position and the knob 5 mounted on'spindle member 6. The parts 19, 23 and 13 are now placed in position with the latch-bar 3 extended as shown and the slot in knob 13 engaging the lugs 22 on plate 19. The parts 19 and 23 are now secured in the position placed, the s indle member 14 and knob 13 pulled out to isengage the slot from lugs 22 and the knob secured to the said spindle member 14.
While the parts are in the latter position it is obvious that the latch-bar 3 may be operated in the usual manner, but when the knob 13 and spindle member 14 are pushed inwardly the slot 15 engages the lugs 22 on the fixed plate 19 and these parts are secured against rotation. Since the spindle member 14 engages the socket 4 and holds it against rotation with consequent movement of the bar 4 the knob 5 and spindle member 6 are likewise secured against rotation. While -the parts are in this position, therefore,
neither knob may be rotated and the latchbar 4 is effectually fastened in an extended position but it may be quickly released by merely pulling the knob 13 out of engagement with the lugs 22.
By providing the connection 7, 8, 17 18 between the latch-bar operating spindle members 6 and 14 the devicecannot be unfastened from theoutside even though the parts 5, 10 and 12 be removed, because the pin 8 is inaccessible and the slot 18 permits the spindle member 6 to be moved forwardly or backwardly without imparting any movement to the spindle member 14. The ins 9 and 16 engaging the plates 10 and 19 limit the'longitudinal movement of the spindle members 6 and 14.
It is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described but one specific embodiment of the invention, changes in form, construction and method of assembly and operation may be made withinthe scope of the appended claims.

A device of the character described, comprising a latch-bar and an operating element operatively connected thereto to advance or retract the same, an operating spindle member engaging said element and movable relative thereto, a fixed support for said device, and interlocking means inserted between the fixed support and movable spindle member and rendered operable by movement of the latter relative to the suport. P 2. A device of the character described, comprising a latch-bar and an operating element operatively connected thereto and a supporting means therefor, a spindle member engaging each end of said operating element and having sliding engagement therewith and with each other, a handle for each spindle member, interlocking means inserted between the supporting means and one of said handles and rendered operative by movement of the handle relative to the said operating element.

A device of the character described, comprising a latch'bar and an operating element operatively connected thereto and a supporting means therefor, a spindle member engaging each end of said operating means and having sliding engagement therewith and with each other, means for preventing disengagement of said spindle members, handles for the-spindle members, interlocking means inserted between the supporting means and one of said handles and rendered operative by movement of the handle relative to the operating element.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a latch-bar and an operating element operatively connected thereto and a supporting means therefor, a spindle member engaging each end of said operating means and having sliding engagement therewith and with each other, means for preventing disengagement of said spindle members, handles for the spindle members, a plate mounted on the supporting means and encompassing one spindle member and means inserted in said spindle member for engaging said plate, a late mounted on the supporting means an encompassing the other spindle member and having an outwardly directed flange formed thereon and lugs formed on the .inner surface of said flange, means mounted on said last spindle member for engaging said flanged plate, and means formed on the adjacent handle for engaging said lugs.
5. A device of the character described comprising a latch-bar and an operating element operatively connected thereto to advance or retract the same, an operating spindle member slidably engaging said element, a fixed support for said device, a handle mounted on said spindle member and an escutcheon therefor, a plate mounted on the support beneath said escutcheon, and interlocking means inserted between said plate and said handle.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a latch-bar and an operating element operatively connected thereto to actuate the same, an operating spindle member slidably engaging said element, a fixed support for said device, a handle mounted on said spindle member and an escuteheon therefor, a plate mounted on said support beneath said escutcheon, means mounted on said spindle member on the inner side of said plate adapted to engage theplate and limit the movement of said spindle member and interlocking means inserted between the said plate and handle and rendered operative by an inward movement of the said handle relative to the late.
