Application filed December My invention relates to mixing machines employable 'for various purposes and in various relations. lt is employable for instance in a step ot the method set forth, described and claimed in my application for improvements in method o't conditioning printing inlr, Eierial llo. 74,774, tiled December 11, 1925, copending herewith. `My improved machine is also applicable in othcrrelations, ior instance, in grinding or mixing ingre dients for the preparation of prescriptions for medicinal use, and for other purposes.
lt is the object oit my invention to provide a mixing machine comprising a rotary stirrer or reducing tool having an axis of rotation at an angle between the vertical and horizon tal and coacting with a bowl having an i11- clined wall for retaining the material` being treated; further, to cause relative rotation `lrc'twccn said rota-ry reducing tool and said bowl; iturtlier, to provide novel means whercby to cause separation between the rotary reducing tool and driving means vfor the same; further, to provide novel means whereby to provide 'various coacting relations between the rotary reducing tool and nested bowls; and, turtlicr, to provide novel means for mounting the driving means.

The trame oi2 the machine as exemplified comprises a base l1, from which pedestals l2, 13, extend upwardly. These pedestals are provided with bearings lli, in which eccentric bearings l5 are journaled. A mixing bowl 17 is provided with trunnions i8, which are 'journaled `in the eccentric bearings. These trunnions are shown in the form of shoulder bolts, threaded into threaded holes in bosses 19 on the wall `o'lE the mixing bowl, arranged for readily disengaging and removing the mixing bowl and reasscmbling the saine on the iframe.
Each of the eccentric bearings is provided with an arm 2l, having a handle 22 extend- .ing therefrom, for shitting the eccentric bearings in order to raiseor lower the bowl. 1When the bowl 17, which may be referred to as the main bowl, is in raised position, the coaction of the tool therein takes place directly with the inner face of the wall of the bowl; which relation is illustrated in Fig.
3. The mixing bowl is arranged to be lowbe nested therein, as illustrated for instance, in Fig. 4, in which relation the tool, while retaining its path ot' rotation, coacts with the inner face of the inner bowl.
The bowl is lined in adjusted positions, as by providing each oi the handles 22 with a pull-pin 24. which is arranged to be selectively received in holes 25, 26, for posit-ioning the eccentric bearings. Each of the pullpins is normally urged into coaction with its hole by a spring 27, between a shoulder 28 on the pull-pin and a plug 29 at the outer end of a socket 30, in which the spring is located.

`The reducing tool is arranged to be driven by a pinionv 51, the hub 52 ot which rotates `in a, bearing 53, the pinion being held endwise in said bearing by a nut 54 threaded to l'said-hub', with theV bearing shouldered between said Vpinion and said nut. An internalgear 55 coacts with the pinion, and is exemplified as an annular Vbeveled rack having inclined teeth, with the pinion having a planetary movement about the annular rack.

A rotatable ring 75 is arrangedto rotate `on said pivoted frame, and is held thereto by a positioning ring 7G provided with an annular rabbet 77 in which an annular ing 78 of the rotatable ring is liournaled. The positioning ring is secured to the ring` structure, as by screws 79.
The bearing-"53 is located on a bracket 8l of the rotatable ring, and moves planetwise with the rotatable ring.
The axis of rotation of the pinion 5l and ot the rotatable tool rotating therewith is preferably at an angle between the `vertical and horizontal. rllhe bowl pieterably has a sloping inner wall, this inner wall beingsubstantially conical in shape and provided with a seat SQ for the inner end 83 ot' the rotatable tool. The slope ot the inner iace oli the wall of the bowl is represented at an angle dillering from the angle ot' thc axis ot rotation of the rotatable tool. The construction shown is such as to provide a iiatl'i ot' rotation ttor the outer face ot the tool which is also suhstantially conical toi' eoacting throughout. its length with the inner periphery ot the bowl.
The rotatable tool is in Fig. 3 exeinplilied as having` an outer periphery in the torni ot a roller 84.-, and in Fig. 4i is represented ot skeleton form, shown at 85, and as having a shank 86 ot small cross-section. provided with the reversely bent portion 87. Other forms of rotatable tools may also he provided. depending on the manner ot agitation, ,f njinding` action or mixing qualities desired. The inner end ot each ot the tools preterably is rounded like the sector of a ball, as shown at 83, and bears in the lower end 82 o'f the bowl. forming substantially ay step bearing for the rotary tool. Upward movement of the tool is limited by the pinion 5l.
The tool is thereby positioned endwise and by its connection with the pinion and its step bearing` is held toward the wall of the bowl in manner preferably to create a grinding etfeet and scraping action between the, outer periphery ot the tool and the inner wall of the bowl. This grinding etl'eet. when the tool takes the torni oi a roller. as in Figi 3, is substantially throughout the outer periphery ot the tool` and in a skeleton tool` such as shown in Fig. ll. is throughoutthe outermost portion of the outer periphery olf the tool, tor creating` intermittent grinding. rubbing` or scraping effects upon said inner wall and thereby pinching and disintegrating the material being ground or mixed hetween the tool and the wall oil the bowl. and scraping the material `troni said wall (o mix the ,v material. The coaction between the lower ends o'f the tool and bowl is similar to the .(oaction between a pestle and inortar Afor causing additional disintegration and mixing ot the materials.
The skeleton tool, as .shown in File'. El. may be provided with a scraping edge 8S and a roller section 89, which coact with the inner -Face of the bowl to scrape the saine and reduce the material.

A suitable number of such bowl stands is provided. rllhey are especially useful when it is desired to condition ditlerent n'iaterials, as when conditioning'printing inks oil ditl'er ent colors, which are intended Yl'or substan- All) tially simultaneous use. rlhe cabinet maybe provided with shelves 138 t'or supporting the bowlfstands, tools and other paris, and packages of materials, and be provided with hinged doors 139 for closing the same.
Having thus fully described my invention what le' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a mixing machine, the combination of a main frame, a gear-trame pivoted thereto, a ring-gear rotatable therein, a mining bowl pivoted to said main frame, and a rotatable tool in said mixing` bowl, said ring gear coacting with .said rotatable tool in said mixing bowl, and the pivotal axes ot said gear-frame and of said mii-:ing bowl being in separated relations to each other for non-interteringly tilting said gear-frame and said mixing bowl respectively.
2. In a mixing machine, the combination of a main trame, and a mixing` bowl and pivoted frame eoacting with each other and pivoted to said main frame', said mixing bowl and said pivoted trame comprisii'ig parts which are normally located in separated horizontal planes and which .move into a common horizontal plane when said mir:- ing bowl and said pivoted trame are pivotally moved into discharge positions, the pivetal. ini-.sg owl and nemend..
oted :trame being at angles with relation to each other for moving said mixing bowl out of the path of pivotal movement of said pivoted trame.
In a mixing machine, the combination of a main iframe, a mixing bowl therein, and a pivotal gear-trame having a substantially horizontal pivotal axis comprising gearing including a ring-gear about the upper end of said mixing bowl at one side ol said pivot and a motor at the other side of said pivot for driving said gearing and arranged 'lor counter-balancing said pivotal gear-trame.
4. In a mixing machine. the combination otl a. main i'rame` a bowl therein, a gear 'frame pivoted to said main traine on a aubstantially horizontal axis in a plane below the top ot' said mixingl bowl and arranged to swing upwardly and away trom said bowl, gearing on said geariiranie atone side ol' the pivot of said gear-trame arranged i'or op* erating a reducing tool. in said mixing bowl, and an electric motor on said gear-trame arranged to swing downwardly at the other side of said pivot whereby to counter-balance said geari`rame- 5. In ay mixing machine, the combination of a main frame, a mixing bowl therein. and a gear-frame coacting with said mixingbowl and provided with a pivot i'or swinging said gear-frame away from said mixing bowl, said gear-frame normally in substantially horizontal position, and said pivot located below the major portion ot the weight ol' said gear-trame when said gear-trame is in said last-named position, and arranged whereby to swing said gear-'trame a vay from said mixing bowl 'tor placing said major portion ol said weight of said gear-Frame at that side of said pivot removed from said mixing bowl.
6. In a mixing' machine. the combination of a main iframe, a mixing bowl therein. a gear-frame having a substantie.ll \v horizontal pivot on said main frame, gearing on said gear-frame arranged .t'or operating` a reduo ing tool in said mixing bowl and arranged to swing upwardly and away Alroin said bowl` said gearing located at one side ot said pivot, said gear-'frame comprising :i bracket at the other side ot .said pivot. and :in electrio motor under said bracket tor operating said gearing and arranged to swine' downwardly at the other side ot said pivot whereby to counter-balance said gear-trame.

9. ln a mixing machine, the combination of a mining bowl having a wall whose inner tace is substantially conical in shape, a re ducing tool whose outer periphery has a path et rotation which is substantially conical in shape and coaets with said inner tace, and means tor rotating said reducing tool comprising a pinion about the axis oi' rota tion ol3 said reducing tool and an internal gear meshing with said pinion substantially concentric with the end ol greater diameter olf said bowl, and constructed and arranged whereby to rotate said reducing` tool on an axis which is at an angle to the axis oil said niiztrng` bowl and to the sector ot' said inner lace nearest said reducing tool.
l0. ln a mining machine, the combination oit a mining bowl having a wall whose inner tace is substantially conical in shape, a reclining tool whose outer periphery has a path ol rotation which is substantially coni cal in shape and coacts with said inner face, and means itor rotatingsaid reducing tool comprising a pinion about the axis ot rotation ol said reducing tool and an internal gear meshing with said pinion substantially concentric with the end ot greater diameter oit said bowl, and constructed and arranged whereby to rotate said reducing tool on an anis which is at an angle to the axis ot said niiiriing bowl and. to the sector of said inner :tace nearest said reducing tool, and said axes intersecting at substantially the bottom oi" said mining bowl.
Ill. ln a mining machine, the combination of a mixing bowl having a wall whose inner iiace is substantially conical in shape, a reducingl tool whose outer periphery has an attrition iace which has a path ol rotation which is substantially conical in shape and which throughout said attrition tace contacts with said inner lace` and means where by the anis oit rotation ot said reducing tool gearing on said gear` and said mixing bowl, have a relative planetary movement between them, the axes ot rotation tor said planetary movement and ot said reducing tool and the apen o't `said inner tace having closest approach at 4,siibstantially coincident points. i
l2. ln a mining machine, the combination ol' a mixing bowl having an inner l'ace which tapers toward its bottom and is provided` lwith a seat at its botigoin, a rotatable reduce ing tool havingI an airis ot rotation at an angle to the axis ol said mining bowl, and whose outer periphery coacts with said inner iace and whose lower end is stepped `in said seat, gearing for rotating said reducing` tool, means whereby said reducing` tool is conlined lor liniiting` axial movement thereoll with relation to saitA seat, means for moving said gearing in axial direction away from said reducing tool, and a releasable connec; tion between said gearing` and said reducing tool.
13. In a mining machine, the combination oif a mining bowl having an inner seat in its` bottom, a reducing tool in said mining bowl having a lower end stepped in said seat, gearing, releasable driving connection between said gearing` and said reducing tool, means 'for releasingl said driving connection by movement away from said mixing bowl, and means whereby to tip said mixing bowl.
1d. lin a mixing machine, the combination of a mixing bowl having an inner seat in its bottom, a rediicing tool in said mining bowl having a .lower end stepped in said seat7 gear ing, releasable driving connection between said gearing and said reducing tool, means for releasing said driving connection by movement away lironi said mixing bowl, means whereby to tip said .mining bowl, and means for positioning said mining bowl :tor coactive relation between said reducing tool. and said gearing.

In a mixing machine, the combination of a mixing bowl, a gear-'l1aine above said nfiixing bowl comprising a ring structure, an internal gear-rack on said ring structm'e, a ring-gear coacting with said ring structure, a pinion meshing with said internal, gearrack and journaled with an inclined axis on said ring-gear, a reducing tool, in said mining bowl, and a releasable connection between said reducing tool and said ring-gear.

In a mixing machine, the combination of bowl supporting means1 an annular raclt and planetary gear structure above said bowl supporting means arranged tor imparting rotary and planetary movements to a reducing tool, nested bowls supported by said bowl supporting means, and means tor adjusting said bowl siiipporting means 'for coaction olf the inner walls oi said respective bowls with saidreducing tool.
17. In a mixing machine, the combination ot bowl supporting means, an annular raclr titi and planetary gear structure above sai-d bowl supporting means arranged for imparting rotary. and planetary movements to a reducing tool, nested bowls supported by said bowl supporting means, said yannular rack and Eof a `ifnixing bowl, a gear-frame above said mixing bowl comprising-'a ring structure, an internal gearracl; on said ring structure, a ringgear co-acti-ng with said ring structure, a pinion meshing with said internal gearrael and journaled on said ring-gear, a reducing toolin said mixing bowl, a releasable connection between said vreducing tool andV sai-d riniggear, and an annular shield on saidv Vring-gear extending over said internal geni rack.
19. In a mixing machine, the combination of a mixing bowl having a substantially conical inner tace and a seat in its bottoni, a driving gear, and interchangeable reducingl tools respectively having lower ends stepped in said seat, upper ends stepped by said dri v ing gear and outer periplieries provided with attrition faces having paths oi rotation of different diameters lengthwise oif the axes of rotation of said tools and which throughout their extents coaet with said inner tace, and the axis of said bowl, the axis of rotation oiFA said reducing tool and the apex oi said conical inner Mitace having closest approach at substantially coincident points for reaction between said tools and said inner face.
