' N. L. MARTZ CAP Filed April 16. 1926 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented May 22,1928.
UNITED STATES NICHOLAS L. MARTZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
car.
Application filed April 16, 1926. Serial No. 102,537.
This invention relates to certain novel. improvements in caps and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly etlicient in use and economical in nnumfacture.
The present invention, contemplates the construction of a cap wherein the cap is capable of stretching to fit various sizes of heads without deteriorating the appearance of the same.
The ordinary cap of this general type, with which I am familiar, prior to my invention, has a continuous rim turned outwardly upon the body portion of the cap covering the head. As this rim forms an extension of the body of the cap at its head receiving port-ions I have found that in turning down a port-ion of the rim to cover the ears and the nape of the neck the ear covering portions are held outwardly from the ears leaving a space for the entrance of cold winds, snow or rain and do not entirely cover the ears and properly protect the same. This is due to the fact that the fold between the upturned rim portion and the down turned rim portion tends to draw the ear covering port-ions away from the ears. It is, therefore, one of the many objects of the invention topro'vide a cap constructed in a manner to eliminatethis objection. f
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter describedv and claimed. I
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of my invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the cap in applied position illustrating the rim thereof turned up upon the body of the cap.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the cap illustrated in Fig. 1 showing the rim turned down over the ears.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the cap illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the blanks from which the side sectors of the cap are formed.
Figs. 5 and 6 are. plan views of the blanks from which the central sectors are formed.
The cap embodying my invention is formed of two side sectors 10 and 11 formed of non-elastic material and adapted to be disposed on opposite sides of the head of the wearer of the cap. Y
Each of these side sectors has a triangular portion 12 cut away providing opposite outwardly diverging edge portions 13. These edge portions 13 are placed contiguous each other and secured together by stitching 14 in a manner well known in the art. By thus securing these edge portions together the blank from which this sector is formed will take the proper curvature and contour to fit over the side of the head from a central top point thereof as indicated at 15, Fig. 3. The edge portion 16 of each of theseside sectors issecured by stitches to an edge portion 17 of an-elastic fabric sector 18 hereinafter set forth. The edge portions 19 of each of these sectors are likewise secured by stitches to the opposite edge portions 20 of a sector 18.
Referring particularly to Fig. 4 of the drawing it will be noted that the corner portion'21 of each of'the sectors 10 and 11 is slightly curved inwardly of the body of the sector for reasons hereinafter set forth and the curved edge portion 22 of this corner portion-as well as the edge portion 22 of the sector is covered by a suitable piping 23 secured to the sector by suitable stitches 23.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated the blanks 25 from which the central elastic back and front sectors 18. and 18 respectively are formed.
Each of theseblanks is of smaller dimension thanthe other and is cut to define at its opposite end portions 26 triangular end portions 26. Each of these blanks is folded centrally upon itself and is incorporated as a part of the cap as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive in the manner herein set forth.
As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing a portion of the rim A at a point where the curved edges 22 of the rim merge into an upturned portion D of the elastic sector 18 is secured to the body proper of the cap by buttons B. It will thus be seen that the forehead covering portion 27 of the rim A of the cap cannot be turned or drawn down over the forehead of the wearer.
The cap is normally worn with the rim A in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. In this view it is manifest that the cap structure provides a neat appearing cap. During cold weather the rim is turned down and extends rearwardly along the head from the buttons B. By reason of the elastic condition of the central sectors 18 and 18 these sectors and adjacent portions of the side sectors 10 and 11 fit snugly over the nape of the neck. These side sectors extend forwardly and then upwardly forwardly of the ears. As will be noted in Fig. 3 the rim portion 28, adjacent the buttons B, folds over itself in its extension to covering position forwardly and over the cars. This in addition to the elastic condition of the rear elastic sector 18 tends to pull the ear covering portions 28 against the ears. As the secured rim portion 27 cannot be drawn down by this pulling action of the rear sector 18 it is manifest that the rim portion 27 cannot be drawn over the eyes as is usual of the ordinary cap of this general t pe.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variations and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
The invention having been set forth, what I claim as new and useful is:
1. In a cap, a body including side sections formed of non-elastic material and intermediate sections formed of elastic material extending from the forehead covering portion of the cap to and over the base of the head, said non-elastic sections and said elastic sections providing a continuous rim turned outwardly and upwardly against the body of the cap, and means for securing the forehead covering'portion of the rim to the non-elastic sectors.
2. In a cap, side sectors formed of nonelastic material and having triangularly shaped portions cut therefrom the edge portions defined by the triangular cut out portions being secured together by stitches, said edge portions when secured together tending to shape the side sectors for positioning on opposite sides of head of the wearer whereby to dispose apexes thus formed in opposed relation with respect to each other, elastic sectors each formed from a blank folded upon itself, said elastic sectors being disposed between the side sectors and having apexes disposed in opposed relation, and means for securing adjacent edge portions of the side sectors to the elastic sectors.
3. In a cap, a body including-elastic sectors extending from the forehead covering portion of the body to and over the base of the head of the wearer, said sectors each being formed from a blank having triangularly shaped end portions and folded'upon itself to dispose the apeXes of the end portions in superimposed position, said sectors when incorporated in said body being dis posed with the apeXes of each blank adjacent each other, and side sectors formed of nonelastic material and disposed on opposite longitudinal sides of the elastic sectors, and means securing adjacent edge portions of the non-elastic and elastic sectors together.
4:. In a cap, a body having a rim portion formed of non-elastic and elastic material, said elastic portions of the rim being disposed to cover the forehead and base of the neck of the wearer, said base covering p0rtions having unsecured edges, said. rim being normally turned outwardly against said body, and means for securing the elastic forehead covering portion of the rim to the body, the unsecured edge of the base covering portion and non-elastic portions of the rim being adapted to be turned outwardly and downwardly from the body.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
