UNITED "STATES JOSEPH S. OF LOS ANGELEfi-CALTFORFI'IA.
COMBINED nooxnn ARMCHAIR AND nnsx.
Application filed October 4, 1926. Serial No. 139,393.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application is a chair adapted for use either as a rocker o'r castored'arm-chair provided with means designed, when desired, to serve asa desk or table suitable for writers, invalids or other persons.
The objects of the invention will become apparent as the detailed description thereof proceeds.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy invention with the desk-table structure shown in operative position;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail elevation of the mechanism for converting the chair from a rocker chair to a castored roller armchair; 1
Figure 3 is an elevational detail showing the desk-table members in folded position; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of a toggle locking joint forming part of the invention.
As illustrated in the drawings, my invention comprises a chair having legs 1, 2, 3, and 4 suitably framed with the usual rails and braces to form a seat 5, back 6 and arm rails 7. The lower ends of the legs 1 and 4 have a rocker 8 fixed thereto, and a similar rocker 9 is likewise secured to the lower ends of the legs 2 and 3.
Outwardly of the rockers 8 and 9, each leg is shaped to form an oifset lO and arecess 11 to receive a chair supporting member 12.
A pair of these members 12 are-shown in the drawing as hinged to the offsets 10 of the legs 2 and 3 to swing about the hinges 13, and are of such length that when fully seated in their recesses 11 their ends extend below the rocker 9 to support it out-of contact with the floor.
In order to swing the members 12 about their hinges 13 into and out of their recesses 11, a toggle linkagehas the ends 14 and 15 of its links 16 and 17, respectively, connected by hinges 18 to the opposed inner sides of the members 12 of the legs 2 and 3. These links are pivoted to each other by a common rule joint 19, which is provided with a clamping pivot nut 20 adapted to be operated to secure the toggle and the supporting members 12 in operative or inoperative position as desired. A ball castor 21,
of any suitable or desired construction, is secured to the end of each member 12 to enable the chair to be rolled wherev r d s ed,
in the usual way, when the supporting mem-' bers 12 are in chair supporting position.
' While the description so far has been limited tot-he showing of the chair-supports and toggle members. as connected to the legs 2 and 3 only, it is to be understood, of course, that the supporting members 12 on thc'legs 1 and 4 are similarly hinged to the,
offsets 10 and are operated by a toggle linkage similar to the linkage just described.
The desk-table parts of my invention comprise a board 22 connected to one of the arms near its front end, by a parliamentary Image 23 to project laterally of the arm 7 a suiiiclent distance to accommodate the board extension 24 when the said parts are in folded position (see Figure 3).
l/Vherethe distance between the desk supporting arms 7 is greater than the height of these arms above the rockers 8' and 9 or the ends of the members 12, when the latter are in chair-supporting position, it is necessary to make the board 22 shorter than this height, so as to permit this board to swing clear of the floor when it is moved to folded position, and to hinge to the free end of this board an extension" 26 of suflicient length to extend to the other arm 7 and serve as a support for the board 22. This extension 26 must, of course, be folded up against" the board 22, as indicated in Figure 3, and may be secured in this folded position by any suitable latch 27.
I The extension 2 1 is connected to the board 22 by pairs of double action hinges to adapt said extension to hang down and behind the board 22 when folded, or to be raised into operative. position, when desired. tensible bracket, having cooperative tele: scoping parts 29 and 30, has'its opposite An eX- ends pivotally connected to the leg 2 and Having thus describedmy invention,'what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A chair having rockers fixed to the lower ends of the legs thereof, said legs having oifsets at their lower end-s extendingv outwardly and laterally of said rockers to form support-receiving recesses, supports piyoted to said ofi'sets to swing" into and out of-sa-id recesses and of lengths sufiieient to raise the.
lower ends 01' the legs thereof, saidlegs having, oifsets extending: laterally from said ends to form recesses, supports hinged to said offsets to swing into or out of said recesses and of sufli'cient length to raise the chair w th its rockers out of contact With a 'flc or when swung into the recesses, and toggle linkages c( nn ectin;, the front and rear supports in pairs'to lock them in rocker raising. positions in. said recesses.
3. The chair as set forth in claim 2 in combination With means for locking said linkagesin any desired position.
In testimony whereof 1; have signed my name to this specification.
