MONOGRAM HOLDER.

This invention relates to improvements in monogram holders particularly adapted though not necessarily limited in its use, for attachment to door handles such as the handles of automobile doors and the like, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is adapted for ready attachment or detachment; thereby rendering it possible to attich an identifying monogram to a vehicle of this character without necessitating painting the same on the vehicle, with the result that the monogram can be readily removed or interchanged and the painting or en-ameling of the vehicle will not be affected.

A further object isto provide an improved holder of this character in which the monogram itself or the arrangement of the characters or letters constituting the monogram maybe readily changed or varied.

A further object is to provide an' improved holder of'this character embodying a removable background or plate arranged behind the monog am and which plate may be readily interchanged with others of different colors to provide the desired coloring which will harmonize with the coloring of the vehicle.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will ap.pear,thc invention consists in the features of noveltv in substantially the construction, combination and arrange ment of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a por tion of a vehicle showing a monogram holder constructed in accordance with the princi ples of this invention applied thereto.

The numeral 19 designates a plate like member which is of anydesired size and configuration but is preferably of the same size as the body holder 13 and of a configuration to conform thereto so, that when it is arranged against one face of the holder it will not project beyond any of the edges thereof. t

This member 19 is adapted to extend across the sight opening 14 and is provided with elongated apertures arranged adjacent the longitudinal edges thereof.

Certain of these apertures 20 are so .ar, ran ed that when the lugs orprojections 15 are deflected laterally as shown in Figure 8 they will pass through the apertures 20, after which the projections 15 may be bent down against the outer face of themember 19 so as to reinovably secure the same to the holder 13. s i

i The material from which the holder is constructed may be of any, desired thickness or gauge that when the member 19 is se cured in position there will be formed a recess 21 which opens through the face of the holder.

Character elements 22 are provided tocooperate with the member 19 and these elements 22 are in turn provided with lugs or projections 28, any number of which may be provided according to the character, which are adapted to enter the apertures and if desired the projections 23 may then be bent against the rear face of the member 19 so as to detachably secure the character elements to the member 19.

The elements 20 are preferably of a thickness substantially equal to the depth of the recess 21 in the holder 13 so that when the elements 22 are in position within the recess 21 the outer faces thereof will be substantially flush with the outer face of the holder 13,.thereby protecting the elements 22.

The member 19 is removably secured to the holder 13 so that it may be interchanged with other members 19 of different colors so that in assembling the holder a member 19 having a shade or color which will harmonize with the painting or finish 0f the vehicle may be employed. The character elements 22 are of such a size that portions of the member 19 will be exposed between and through the characters.

When the parts are assembled as shown in Figure 9 the holder may then be applied to the handle 11 of the vehicle by placing the body. portion of the holder against the outer face of the handle and then deflecting the formations 16 so that they will pass around the handle 1]. as shown more clearly in Fig ures "l: and 5. The portions 17 may also be deflected over the lapping ends of the formations 16 so as to prevent accidental disengagement of the holder from the handle.

With this improved construction it will be manifest that there is provided a monogram holder which may be readily attached to or detached from the handle of the vehicle and in which the monogram itself may be readily changed when desired.

llhile the preferred use of the inventioi'l has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that a monogram holder of this character is well adapted for various other purposes. and while the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described. it is also to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts, within the'scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.

What is claimed as new is 1-- 1. A device of the character described embodying a main holder having a sight opening therethrough and provided with ductile projections along the top and bottom of said opening, a character supporting member hav ing slots extending lengthwise thereof and spaced from each other in directions lengthwise and also transversely of the member, and character elements having projections at the top. and bottom thereof, the last said projection extending through the respective said slots and bent down against the back of the supporting member, the said projections on the said holder also passing through the respective adjacent said slots in the character supporting member and being bent down against the back of said holder slots and bent down against the back of the supporting member, the said projections on the said holder also passing through. the respective adjacent said slots in the character supporting member and being bent down against the back of said holder for removably securing the said supporting member to the holder, the said characters standing within the said sight opening and being substantially flush with the outer face of said holder.

A device of the character described embodying a main holder having a sight opening therethrongh and jn-ovided with ductile projections along the top and, bottom of said opening, a character supporting member having slots extending lengthwise thereof and spaced from each other in directions lengthwise and also transversely of the member, and character elements having projec tions at the top and bottom thereof, the last said projections extending through the respective said slots 2 id bent down against the back of the supporting I'Utlllbtl, the said projewtirms on the said holder also passing throngh the respective adjacent said slots in the character supporting member and being bent down again-st the back of said holder for rcmovably securing the said supporting member to the holder, the said 'irojections on the holder and character elements which enter the same slots in the said character supporting member being bent in opposite directions against the back of the said char actor supporting member.
