ELECTRIC FURNACE.

This invention relates to electric furnaces, and more particularly to electric furnaces -in which the tops or roofs may be removed combination of parts hereinafter described .gether b cross members 7.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the furnace body, and 3 desiginates the furnace roof. The furnace body 2 has the usual pouring spout 4, and slagging spout 5,. together with the usual hearth and fire-brick lining (not"- shown), and is mounted on a movable truck consisting of side vframes 6 connected t0- The truck A, is provi ed with flanged wheels 8, and is adapted to be propelled by a motor 9 along a` track 10 and track sections 12 ona tilting base or cradle B. p
The'cradle B consists of side beams 13 havin the track sections 12 thereon and connecte together by cross kmembers 14. Side frames 15 and 16 extend upwardly from the side beams 13 of the cradle and are joined 'at their to s. by cross beams 17.

The cradle Bf-isconnected by acrod 22 to a crank 23, which crank is preferably power driven to tilt the cradle B and furnace mounted thereon for slagging and pouring. Bumper blocks 24 are bolted or otherwise secured to the side beams 13 of the cradle to stop and center the furnace body 2 with respect to the furnace top or roof 3.
The furnace roof 3 is of the usual construction of fire-brick bound and reinforced by '28 which are frames 15 and 16 of the steel with openings 25 through which elec trodes 26 pass into the furnace. Suitable standard mechanism 26a is mounted on' the side frame 15 for raising .and lowering the electrodes 26.
The roof 3 is connected by adjustable and.
flexible links 27 to one 'arm of bell cranks pivotally secured to brackets `29 on cross beams-17. The other arms of bell cranks 28' are connected in pairs by connecting rods are connected'by a link'31 to one arm of an operating bell crank 32. The other arm of each of the bell'cranks 32 are connected by rods 33 to cranks 34, which cranks are keyed to a shaft 35 driven by a motor 36 through a speed reducer 37 pinion 38 and gear 39. The cranks 34, shaft 35, motor 36 and gearino above described, are all supported on the side frame 16 of the cradle.
A pair of guide castin s 40 are secured to y opposite points,
the roof 3 at diametrica and adapted to engage with guide castings 41 bolted or otherwise secured to the side cradle.v The guide castings 4() and 41 serve to hold the roof 3 in position when it is raised or lowered and also while the furnace is being poured.
Locking pins 42 are suspended by chains 43 or other suitable flexible members from the roof guide castings40: The pins 42 pass through apertured lugs 44 secured to the side frames 15 and 16, and engage in lugs 45 secured to the furnacebody 2.v The pins 42 and lugs 44 and 45 serve to lock the furnace body 2 to the cradle so as to prevent movevment of the furnace relative to the cradle B when the cradle is tilted.

A moved outof the cradle body 2 and truck 30, and each' pair of bell cranks and onto the track 10 for charging, as shown at C, Figure 1. The charge is placed on the hearth, and the truck A is propelled onto the cradle so as to aline with the roof 3. The roof .3 is then lowered into position on the furnace body 2 by operation of the bell cranks 28 and 32. As the roof 3 is lowered onto the furnace body 2, the locking pins 42 will enter the lugs 45, thus locking the furnace body 2 to the cradle B. The electrodes will then be lowered' into position and the charge melted. After the charge is melted and read to pour, the electrodes are raised and the urnace tilted by rocking the cradle B to slag and pour the metal. After the metal is poured the cradle will again be llo brought to a horizontal position,A and the roof 3 is raised, thus removing the ins 42 from the lugs 45, and freeing the furnace body so that it may be again ,moved ont the track 10 for charging. v
While Ihave shown one specific embodiment of my invention, it will be understood` that I do not wish to be limited thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as delined in the appended claims.

1.'I1 1 an electric furnace, comprising a tilting base, tracks on said base, a frame extending upwardlyV from said base, a wheel supportedl furnace body adaptedto be run on said tracks into and out of position in said frame, a vertically adjustable roof carried by said frame, means for adjusting said roof, and means for locking said furnace body in position i'n said frame.
2, In an electric' furnace, comprising a tilting base, tracks on said base, a frame extending upwardly from said base, a wheel supported furnace body adapted to be run on said tracks into and out of position in said frame, a vertically adjustable roof carried by said frame, power operated mechanical means for adjusting said roof, andmeans suspended from saidY roof and cooperating. with other means on said frame and said furnace body for locking said furnace body in position in said frame.
3. In an electric furnace, comprising a tilting base, tracks on said base, a frame extending upwardly from said base, a wheel supported furnace body adapted to be run on said tracks into and out of position in said frame, a vertically adjustable roof carried by said frame, power operated mechan-v ical means for adjusting said roof, locking pinssuspended from said roof and sldably mounted in blocks secured to saidframe, and apertured blocks secured to said furnace body, said pins being adapted to enter the apertures in said blocks on said furnace body and lock said furnace body in position in said frame. y

plurality of bell cranks pivotallysupported on said frame, adjustable flexible supporting members connected l'to 4said bell cranks and to spaced points of said roof, and power means for rocking said bell cranks to adjust said roof." i

Inan electric tilting base, tracks on said base, tending upwardly from said base, supported on said tracks into and out of position in said frame, a vertically adjustable roof, a plurality of bell cranks'pivotally supported on said frame, adjustable flexible supporting members connected to one armof each of furnace, comprising a a.- vwheel a frame exfurnace body adapted to be run v said bell cranks and to said roof, said bell cranks being connected in pairs' by connectpower means for rocking said bell cranks to raise and lower said roof.
