CONTAINER-CUTTING MACHINE.
Application filed. February The invention relates'to a container for1ning and cutting machine, and has for its object to provide a device of this character particularly adapted for placing incisions a in opposite sides of a strip of paper and for severing the strip when desired whereby strips are formed which may be easily and quickly bent to cylindrical form, and interengaged by the opposite slits for forming a plant shield or container. The device is particularly adapted for forming plant shields.
A further objectis to provide a machine wherein a plurality of strips may be fed through the same simultaneously and simultaneously cut.
A further object is to provide superimposed feed rolls through which the strips pass, and by the rotation of which feed rolls the strip may be fed through the machine.
A further object is to provide pivoted members on the knives, which members limit the downward movement of the knives and v the length of the incisions in opposite sides of the strip and when pivoted upwardly and held allow the knives to sever the strip into sections.
with the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is 36 claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an end elevation of the machine.
4K0 Figure 2 is a side elevation of the machine.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the plant shields formed from one of the strips.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the machine.
Figure 5 is a plan view of one of the strip sectionsbefore bending to cylindrical form.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the frame of the machine which is rectangularly shaped as shown, and provided with supporting legs 2 which may be anchored to the floor in any suitable manner. Rotatably mounted within the frame 1 is a feed roller 3 with which a superimposed weight roller 4.- cooperates, and between 11, 1927. Serial No. 167,473.
which rollers the plant shield strips 5 extend and are fed when the operator rotates the roller 8 by means of a crank 5. The plant shield strip 5 ext-ends rearwardly over the guide plate 7 and to paper rolls 8 from which they are fed, and which rolls are sup ported preferably on transversely disposed rods 9. It will be noted that four rolls 8 are shown of strip paper, however it is to be understood that any number desired may be used, and four are shown for purposes of illustration only. By providing a plurality of rolls 8, it is possible by the mechanism hereinafter set forth to sever and cut a plurality of strips 5 as shown in Figure 5 for forming the plant shield 10 shown in Figure 3.
Pivotally connected at 11 to one side of the strips is a knife 12, which knife is adapted to be grasped by the operator and moved downwardly for cutting a slot 13 in the adjacent side of the strip at any desired point, and pivotally connected at 14 to the opposite side of the machine is a knife 15 adapted to be moved downwardly for cutting a slot 16 in the opposite side of the strip of material. The slots 13 and 16 extend substantially to the longitudinal center of the strip whereby when the strip 5 is formed and bent to cylindrical form, said slots may be placed in interengagement for forming the cylindrical plant shield 10 adapted to be placed around plants for protecting the same.
Pivotally connected to the knives 12 and 15, are arms 17,which arms, when the knives are moved downwardly engage adjacent parts of the machine and limitthe movement of the knives whereby they will not sever the strip entirely across, however after the forming of the slots 13 and 16 said strips may be severed entirely across for forming the members 5 by swinging the members 17 upwardly with the finger where they will not engage any part of the machine and limit the movement of the knives, consequently the strips may be transversely severed in the desired lengths. Extending beyond one end of the machine is a tray 18 into which the strips may drop or be deposited as they are severed.
From the above it will be seen that a strip cutting and severing device is provided which is particularly adapted for cutting strips of material to be used as plant shields, but which may be used for cutting strips to tween said cutter bars, means for rotating said feed rollers for feeding strips longitudinally and knives pivoted at opposite sides of the strip and cooperating with the cutter bars, said knives having limiting means thereon whereby in cutting slits in opposite sides of the strips they will be limited in their movement such limiting means being movable for allowing unlimited movement of the knives whereby said strips may be entirely severed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
ALBERT M. ROSS.
