This invention relates to a flue end connection which is especially adapted for use in boilers of the fire-tube type, such as are employed in locomotives, marine boilers and the like, for attaching the flue ends'to the tube sheet of the fire box end of the boiler An'object of this'invention is to provide a connection between the flue end and the tube sheet, which is of such character as to insure the formation of a tight joint which is capable of withstandingthe strain due to expansion and contraction to such an extent as to reduce to a minimum the possibility of loosening of the joint. thereby obviating leakage of the jointto a large degree.
With the foregoing objects in view. to-
gether with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the inven-- tion consists generally in forming a flue sheet 7 With a. flue end receiving opening, the inner margin of which opening is countersunk to provide a recess to form the inner rim of' the opening, and in providing a flue end section comprising a tube-which is adapted tothe invention particularly residing in proy viding a shoulder at the base of the reduced end portion of the flue section consisting of an annular flange projecting in the direction of the reduced end portion, which flange seats in the recess in the flue sheet and encircles and surrounds the inner end portion of the asket.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:

More specifically, 7 indicates the tubular flue end section, 8 denotes the flueon which the end section is fixed, and 9 designates the flue sheet having an opening 10 to receive. the outer end portion of the flue end section; 11 indicating the rear orwater side face of the flue sheet, and 12 designating the front or fire box side of the flue sheet.
In carrying out my invention, an annular recess 13 is formed alongthe margin or rim of the opening 10 on the inner face 11 of the flue sheet, which recess constitutesa counterbore and affords a countersunk shoulder 14 in the wall of the opening 10 spaced from the rear surface of the flue sheet. The flue, end section is formed with an intermediate body nortion 15 of an external diametersubstantially corresponding to that of the flue 8 and is provided with a reduced rear end portion 16 adapted to extend into the flue 8 and having. an external diameter substantially corresponding to the internal diameter of the flue 8; the flue 8 being shrunk onto the reduced end portion 16 of the flue end section and being aflixed' thereto by a weld joint 17 as is Well known in the art.
The essence of the present invention resides in forming the outer end portion of the flue end section with a reduced end portion 18 of an external diameter lessthan the diameter of the opening 10 in the flue sheet through which the end portion 18 is designed to extend in spaced relation to the walls of the opening 10. A shoulder 19 is formed at the base of the reduced portion 18 on which is formed an annular end flange 20 which is adapted to seat in the recess 14 in the flue sheet with the outer end face of the flange 20 abutting against the bottom wall or shoulder of the recess and with the peripheral face of the flange 20 snugly fitting the side wall of the recess 14. The inner face of the flange 20 being spaced from the outer periphery of the reduced extension 18 provides an annular channel 21 the bot tom wall of which is adapted to span the gap formed between the Walls of the extension 18 and of the opening 10. An annular gasket 22 formed of relatively soft metal such as copper, is positioned to encircle the reduced opening 10, as particularly shown in Fig. 6,
with the outer end of the gasketextending substantially flush with the outer face 12 of the flue sheet. reduced extension 18 is beaded over the outer tat-e12 of the flue sheet, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6; the bead completely covering the outer end portion of the gasket 22.
