JOSEPH S. BLINN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SUPPOSITORY INJECTOR.
Application filed February 24.-, 1923. Serial N'o. 620,996.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. BLINN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Suppository Injector, of which the following is description. p
My invention relates to an injector or applicator for the insertion of a supposito'ry in a cavity of a human body.
The general object of my invention is to provide a device for the indicated purpose so formed and arranged as to insure the proper insertion and application of the suppository while eliminating the possibility of producing injury, distress or discomfort in the placing of the suppository.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the body of the injector or applicator, the plunger being omitted and a suppository shown inserted therein;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the plunger inserted in the body of the injector and the suppository forced to a forward position ready for ejection, the plunger being shown in elevation;
Figure 3 represents an elevation of the cylinder and tip of the injector body;
Figure f1 is a front elevat-ion of the iujector body on an enlarged scale;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the injector with a protective cap thereon as when the injector is not required for use.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example an injector body is provided, consisting of a cylinder 10 adapted to receive a plunger 1l. The injector body includes a rearwardly flaring bell mouth 13 secured by threads 14 to the cylinder 10. The plunger has its rear end in the form of an eye 15 for receiving a linger in the operation of the plunger.
The cylinder 10 is provided with a tip composed of resilient elongated members produced by forming longitudinal slits 16 in the front tapered terminal of the cylinder, the slits being at angles to each other and preferably disposed so as to quarter said tip, thereby producing a plurality of resilient members 17. The front end of the tip` is given a ball formation by producing enlargements 18 on the resilient fingers 17, the enlargements presenting externally rounded lines so that jointly the enlargements are approximately of ball formation particularly when the fingers are not distended. In use the plunger is withdrawn from the cylinder 10 and a suppository A placed in the rear end. rlhe plunger 11 is now inserted in the cylinder 10 through the flaring bell mouth 13 to advance the suppository A to the front end of the tapered terminal of the cylinder 10 as shown in Figure 2 so that the suppository is disposed between and lightly gripped by the resilient fingers 17. The device is now inserted in the cavity of the body and the plunger 11 moved forwardly to force the suppository A through the tip of the cylinder 10, the resilient members. 17 yielding to the pressure. The enlargements 18 in the insertion of the injector into the body, prevent any possible priclring or laceration of the internal walls of the cavity. The resilient members 17 have the further function of preventing the suppository from being pressed back into the device. Said resilient members normally slightly converge and therefore the front edges of said members at the enlargements 18 have a slight tendency to dig into the material of the suppository and prevent its retrograde .movej ment.
The flaring bell mouth 13 constitutes a stop limiting` the insertion of the device into.
the cavity to be treated. The bell mouth 18 is formed rigid with a forwardly extending tubular element 12 and the threaded connection 14 permits of the longitudinal adjustment of the tubular element 12 on the cylinder 10, thus varying the effective length of the device. The adjustment of the element 12 on the cylinder 10 is independent of the plunger and the varying of the length of the body formed jointly by the cylinder 10 and element 12 does not vary the forward movement of the plunger 11 because in all cases said forward movement is limited by a Shoulder or collar 111 contacting with the rear end of cylinder 10.
When the injector is not in use a cap 19 is .placed on the front end thereof. Said cap 19 has a tight tit on the tapered surface of element '12 of the bell mouth 13 and in addition the interior of the cap at the front end is formed ofy reduced diameterI as, at V2O,
