ITHE GHAPHIBCO FHOTO-LITH.3S&4( PARK PLACEMY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. JOHNSTON, OF OTTUMWA, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,572, dated July 28. 1874; application filed January 23. 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. JOHNSTON, of Ottulnwa, in the county of Wapello and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Tie; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying; drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a metallic bag-tie, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my bagtie closed, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same open.
My bag-tie is made of three or more pieces, A, B, and O, stamped or pressed, of metal in half-round form, and hinged together at a and b, as shown. The piece Ais stamped with a hook, (I, at its outer end, and with projecting ears 6 on the sides. One of these ears is bent outward, and upon the same is pivoted a latch, j, which is to enter a slot in the other. The piece 0 is pressed to fit in the piece A, and has a series of holes, 00 m, pressed in it.
When this bag-tie is placed on the bag and pressed together the hook d catches in one of the holes at, thereby fastening the tie together 011 the bag. For better security the latch f is turned over the part 0 into the slot in the opposite ear 6.
The bag-tie may be made in as many pieces as desired, the end pieces being constructed, as herein shown and described, for the pieces A and 0.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the metallic pieces A B (J, hinged together, having hook d and slots 00 0c, and the latch f, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of January, 1874.
