ENVELOPE.
Application led July 24, 1922. Serial No. 576,916.
To, all whom t may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W..T0WN SEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester -and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in an Envelope, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is L a specification.
My` 'nvention relates to envelopes, and has for its object to provide an envelope that may be readily attached to the handle or knob of a door, or to any other simllar projection, so that the envelope with its 'contents will be directly called to\the ate tention of a person encountering the same. A Envelopes embodying my invention are particularly adapted for the delivery fof mail or other matter to hotel rooms or apartments in which the doors are ordinarily locked, so that the occupant of the room or apartment will have lhis attention called to the envelope immediately upon entering into, or emerging from the room or apartment. y f
lIn the accom an'ying drawings, y
Fig. 1 is a view showing the frontof an envelope embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view looking at the back of the envelope of Fig. 1, withithe closlng iap extended.v y
Fig. 3 is a view of the portion of a door, with my improved envelope applied'to the knob thereof.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing my invention embodied in a modified form of envelope.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different' figures. p
Referring to'Figs. 1 and 2, the body portion 1 of the envelope is provided near its upper end with an opening 2fextending" therethrough/from which radiate slits 3. The slits 3 are of such length as to permit the envelope to be slipped over the knob 4 of a door 5, as indicated in Fig. the shank 6 of the' knob 4i, then extending through the opening 2 and supporting the envelope at its upper end. J
As best shown in Fig. 2,.the b'ody portion 1 is provided at its lower end with a sealed Hap 7 and at its upper end with a closing ap 8 having a gummed portion 9. The Closing flap 8 is also provided with an opening 2a having radiating slits 3a which are adapted to register with thel openin y2 .and the slits 3 respectively when the ap is provided at the lower end of the envelope.
The envelope shown/in Fig. 4 is adapted to be appliedy to the knob of a door in exactly the same manner as the envelope shown in Fig. 1.
The front face of either the body portion 1 or the body portion 11 may be provided with suitable printing to indicate the person for whom the envelope is intended, .the lo-l cation of the room, Jthe time of the delivery of the envelope and the person by whom the envelope is delivered, as .indicated in/ Fig. 1.
From the foregoing then, it is apparent that by my invention I .have provided an envelope which is adapted to be readily applied to the handle or knob of a door, so that it will attract the attention of a person openingthe door. It is believed that hotels will find envelopes embodying my invention particularly useful for the delivery of mail,
and other matter, to rooms in which the occupant is either absent or asleep, thereby adding to the service rendered by the hotel to its patrons.
I claim,
1. A paper enclosure provided with anv yopening extending therethrough and slits radiating from` said opening, whereby the material surrounding the opening isadapted to yield and the enclosuremay be slipped over a projection larger than said opening, and supported on a reduced portion of said projection smaller than saidopening.
2. An envelope provided at oneend with a closing Hap, and having an opening extending through the body portion of the envelope and the closing flap, with slits radiating therefrom, whereby said envelope, with the flap closed, can be slipped over a projection having a portion larger than said rQ v l 1,529,381
opening, the material between and adjacent radiating therefrom, the material between l to the said slits being adapted to yield to said slitsand adjacent thereto being yieldpressure. able whereby said envelope, with the flapl 10 3. An envelope provided at one end with closed, can be attac/lied to a door knob larger 5 a closing flap, and having an opening exthan said opening, and having a lshank tending through the body portion of the smaller than said opening. 1 envelope and the closing Hap, with slits CHARLES W. TOWNSEND.
