PUMPING APPARATUS.

To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLARnNon WARNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dayton, county of Montgomery,
l State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Pumping Appara-tus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
'T his invention relates to pumping apparatus of the suction type, and has for its object the provision of a simple and compact pumping unit, tending toward a reduction in the number of parts.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein a preferred embodiment of o-ne forni of the present invention is clearly shown.

In the drawings, a power head frame 20 supports an electric motor 21 and encloses power driven mechanism which may be of the type disclosed in the copending application of G. A. Buvinger and C. Warner, Serial No. 626,174, filed March 19, 1923 (DL 147 An aperture 22is provided in end Wall 23 of frame 20. A cross head guide 24, supported within frame 20 receives across head 25 which is attached to a connecting rod 26 by a pin 27, the rod 26 being connected with the power driven mechanism referred to, whereby the cross head 25 is reciprocated within the cross head guide 24. Cross head 25 is provided with a threaded extension 28.
A pump frame 30 is provided with an eX- tension 31 being threaded adjacent the end thereof, and of such size as to be received by the opening 22 in wall 23 of frame 20. EX- tension 31 receives a nut 32 which when drawn up on extension 31 tightens the joint between wall 23 of frame 2O and wall 33 of ump frame 30. Frame 30 is provided with inlet chamber 35 having a vbaille 36 for keeping the pump valves under water to prevent drying out, and also for keeping the pump primed, and an outlet chamber 37 having a baille 38 for maintaining a column of water in the pump and also keep-ing the valves Serial No. 670,356.
under water. Removable plugs 39 and 40 are provided in frame 30 for priming of the outlet and inlet chambers 37 and 35frespectively when the pump is first installed. IVall 41 of inlet chamber 35 is provided with an opening 42 for receiving a` removable plug 43 for a purpose to be described, and chamber is adapted to be drained through means of a plug 43. Pipe connects inlet chamber 35 with a suitablesource of supply, and pipe 46 lconnects the outlet chamber 37 with suitable service pipes. `@utlet chamber 37 is adapted 'to be drained through means of a removable plug 46. Inlet and outlet chambers 35 and 37 respectively are connected by a cylindrical aperture 50 in alignment with aperture 42 in wall 41 between walls 51 and 52'c1 of pump frame 30, and a cylinder 52 is press-fitted between these two walls, and is internally threaded adjacentthe end thereof nearest the inlet chamber 35, for receiving a removable valve seat 53 having po- rts 54 and 55 which connect the cylinder 52 with the inlet chamber 35. A screw 56 is mounted in valve seat 53 and provides a support for a spring 57 which bears against disc valve 58 slidably mounted ou said screw, for normally resiliently maintaining valve` 58 on its seat 53, thereby controlling ports 54 and 55.
Tall 33 and extension 31 of pump frame 30 are provided with an aperture 60 in alignment with apertures 42 and 50. Aperture 60 permits reciprocation.therethrough of a connecting rod or plunger 65, one end of which has connection with the threaded` portion 28 of cross head 25, the other end extending into cylinder 52 and having threaded connection with a piston 74, comprising a valve cage 66 and a plug 75 having threaded connection with the valve cage 66. Connecting rod is of such size as to displace substantially one half of the volume of water which the cylinderV 52 is capable of holding during the operation of the pump. Plug is provided with an opening 67 connecting cylinder 52 with the interior of cage 66, and cage 66 is provided with outlet ports 68 and 69 leading into the interior of cylinder 52. An annular groove 77a in plug 75 receives packing 78 which is held in place between plug 75 and valve cage 66 when plug 75 is screwed into cage 66. Plug 75 provides a piston head and also a seat 75a for a valve 72 to be described. A

A springY 79 which surrounds boss 7l. bears against washer 72 and the wall S() of valve cage G6 `to normally resiliently maintain the valve '72 on its seat 75.

Rod 65 is provided with wrench holes 90 and 91 for a purpose to be described.
Mode of operation.

Then when the piston le is moved to the left, as viewed in Fig. l, the valve will be closed and valve 72 will be openefh thereby permittingv water to flow from the interior of' cylinder 52 through inlet openingo? and through outlet openings 68 and 69-into the outlet chamber 3T. up over battle plate 38 and down into outlet pipe t6 to the service pipes. However, inasmuch as the rodfor plunger is of such size as to displaeesubstantially one halt of the water which the cylinder 52 is capable of holding' during operation or" the pump, about one halt of thevw'ater in cylinder 52 will he discharged into the outlet chamber on the stroke of the piston 74 to the lett4 as viewed in Fig. l. The rod G5 may be removed through openinpT 42 in the pump trame 30 by removing' plug;` 43 and loosening vulve seat 53 from the cylinder 52. Removal ot valve seats 53 brings valve 58 with it in assembled relation. Piston 'T4 including head 75, valvi` enge (Sti and valve T2 may be removed :is a unit from the rod G5. Piston head 75may then be removed from valve cage 66, and valve 72, including' spring' T9, screw 70 and washers 72" and 72h may be lifted trom valve 'aac (36 in assembled relation.

`What claimed is as follows:

2. A pump of the class described co1nprising a hollow pump frame or casing llt) having a tubular extension at one end whereby the same may be attached to a power head, an opening at its other end located in line with said extension, and internal walls whereby an inlet and an outlet chamber are provided within said casing; said casing having an internal cylinder receiving opening in line with said first mentioned opening and with said tubular extension or' less diameter than that of said first mentioned opening; a pump cylinder held in place within said second mentioned opening and the ends of which open into said inlet and outlet chambers, and which cylinder is removable through said first mentioned opening; a valved piston operating in said cylinder; a plunger extending from said piston through said tubular eX- tension and whereby reciprocatory movement may be imparted to said piston; an inlet pipe leading into said inlet chamber; an inlet valve carried by said cylinder; and an outlet pipe leading from said outlet chamber.
3. A pump of the class described comprising a hollow pump frame or casing having a tubular extension at one end whereby the same may be attached to a power head, a cylinder located at a low level within said casing and in line with said extension, and internal walls whereby an inlet and an outlet chamber are provided within said casing, and which chambers extend above the upper limits of said cylinder and communicate one with one and the other with the other end thereof; a valved piston operating in said cylinder; a connecting rod extending from said piston through said tubular extension and whereby a reciprocatory movement may be imparted to said piston; an inlet pipe leading into said inlet chamber; and an outlet pipe leading from said outlet chamber.
4. A pump of the class described comprising a hollow pump frame or casing having a tubular extension at one end whereby the same may be attached to a power head, a cylinder located at a low level within said casing and in line with said eXtension, and internal walls whereby an inlet and an outlet chamber are provided within said casing, and which chambers extend above the upper limits of said cylinder and communicate one with one and the other with the other end thereof; a valved piston operating in said cylinder; a connecting rod extending from said piston through said tubular extension and whereby reciprocatory movement may be imparted to said piston; an inlet passage in said casing leading from a low point therein upward and into said inlet chamber above the level of said cylinder; a valve carried by said cylinder; and an outlet pipe leading from said outlet chamber -from a point below the upper end thereof.
5. A pump of the class described comprising a hollow pump :trame or casing having a tubular extension at one end whereby the same may be attached to a power head, a cylinder located at a low level within said casing and in line with said extension, and internal walls whereby an inlet and an outlet chamber are provided within said oasing, and which chambers extend above 'the upper limits of said cylinder and communicate one with one and the other with the other end thereof; a valved piston operating in said cylinder; a connecting rod extending from said piston through said tubular extension and whereby reciprocatory movement may be imparted to said piston; an inlet pipe through which liquid is supplied to said inlet chamber; an inlet valve carried by said cylinder; an outlet pipe leading from said outlet chamber; and baiiies, one in said inlet and another in said outlet chamber, whereby liquid operated upon caused to flow first upward and then downward in each ot said chambers.
6. Pumping apparatus comprising, in combination, a power head frame, a pump Ylrame removably secured thereto and including inlet and outlet chambers, a pump cylinder; a stationary valve supported by said cylinder for controlling communication between the inlet chamber and cylinder, a piston adapted to be reciprocated within said cylinder, a plunger extending from said power head i1 ame into the pump frame and connected with said piston; a valve carried by said piston igor controlling communication between the cylinder and outlet chamber; and means within Said chambers for keeping the valves submerged.
