CYLINDER-BORING momma Application filed August 23, 1923. Serial No. 658,993.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. FARTHING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paducah, in the county of McCracken and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder- Boring Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Th object of the present invention is the provision of a machine for borin truing cylinders and the like, and WhlCh' is simple, effective and readily operable.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a post or standard provided with a base 2, whereby it may be bolted or otherwise secured to a suitable support. The upper end of the post or standard 1 curves laterally, as indicated at 3, and terminates in a vertical sleev 4. to be operated from a suitable source of power in a manner well understood- A boring shaft 12 has a snug fit within the bevel gear wheel 9 and is rotatable there with by means of a feather'or spline connection. The upper portion of the boring shaft 12 is reduced and externally screw threaded, as indicated at 15, and cooperates with a feed nut 14 mounted in the sleeve 4, whereby to control the feed of the boring tool. A combined retainer and guide bracket 15 is secured to the post 1 above the gear wheel 9 and engages the latter and prevents vertical displacement thereof. The boring shaft 12 passes through the bracket 15.
A guide bracket 16 is secured to the post 1 and receives the lower end of the boring shaft 12 and steadies the same. A work table 17 is bolted or otherwise attached to' the post 1 and receives and supports the cylinder or other part to be bored. Suitable clamps 18 are provided upon the work table 17 to engage and hold the cylinder 19 or like part to be bored.
A centering block 20 is mounted upon the boring shaft 12 and serves to center the work 19. The-centering block 20 is of tapering form to adapt itself to the bore or opening of the cylinder 19 or like part.-
A countershaft 21 is mounted in bear ngs at one side of the post 1 and is provided with a stepped pulley 22 and tight and loose pulleys 23. The drive belt, not shown, cooperates with the pulleys 23 in a manner well understood and the stepped pulleys 11 and 22 provide for changing the speed of the boring shaft. Obviously the machine may be operated by hand or power as 7 required.
The numeral 24 designates the body of the tool holder, the same snugly fitting upon the boring shaft 12 and eld thereon by means of set screws 25 and 26, the latter also serving as means for adjusting the bit 27. A loop 28 formin a part of the tool holder and disposed re atively at the front side thereof, receives the bit or cutting tool 27 which is held in the required ad usted position by means of a set screw 29. The set screw 26 passes through a portion of the tool holder and a transverse opening of the boring shaft 12 and is disposed in line with the bit or tool 27 and engages the inner end thereof and serves as --means for adjusting the tool as required. When adjusting the tool 27, the set screw 29 is loosened, and when adjusted, the tool is made secure by tight- ..ening the set screw 29.
- 12 is rotated and lowered to advance the tool as "the boring progresses. After the parts'have been properly adjusted, the shaft 7 is rotated and imparts a corresponding rotary movement to the boring shaft 12, the
latter being lowered to feed the cutting tool by means of the nut 14 which is manipulated by hand. The boring shaft 12 vis supported against lateral displacement by means of the bracket 16, sleeve 4, gear wheel 9 and bracket 15. The boring is true and may be accurately adjusted by means of the set screw 26 in the manner stated.
What is claimed is;
1. A boring tool of the character specified including a boring shaft, a tool holder 'including a sleeve mounted upon the boring shaft, and a set screw mounted in the sleeve and passing through theshaft for securing the tool holder to the shaft and also operating to adjust the tool.
2. A boring tool of the character specified including a boring shaft, a tool holder thereon, means carried --by the tool holder for securing the tool in the required ad- I justed position, and a set screw passing through a portion of the tool holder andthrough the shaft for securing the tool holder to the shaft and serving as adjusting means for the tool.
3. A boring tool of the character specified comprising a boring shaft, 9. tool holder mounted upon the boring shaft and provided with a tool receiving loop, a set screw justed position, a secondset screw for securing the tool holder to the shaft, and a third set screw passing through a portion of'the tool holder and through the shaft and adapted to engage the tool to effect adjustment thereof.
