. G. A. BLUE GRAVE ARKER Filed pt. 8, 1925 Tir;
12 i if i Patented Aug. 24, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
GLENN A. BLUE, OF TWIN FALLS, IDAHO.
GRAVE MARKER;
Application filed September 8, 1925. Serial No. 55,005.
morial tablet a space to receive a card. or
other data concerning the deceased, and this construction has been found very impractical because of the fading and deterioration of such an inserted card, so that my invention contemplates the use of a permanent marking plate having the indicia diestamped thereon so as to be impervious to weather conditions and always readily visible to the observer. I
In other constructions it has also been the practice to assemble the marking plate and stake before the driving ofthe latter in its proper position to indicate the grave to be marked. This often defeated the securing of the stake in hard or rocky ground as it was not provided with suitable means by which a tool could be applied for driving purposes. I have therefore devised a construction in which the stake is separable from the marking plate and provided with,
means for driving the same and also with anchoring devices to prevent its withdrawal or displacement.
The marking plate is further formed with means to interlock with the upper end of the stake which is so inclined at an angle to the vertical as to dispose the plate in a position'to be easily read by the observer on looking downward. In the ordinary construction of such plates they are disposed in the same vertical plane as the stake and it is necessary to bend down in order t read the indicia inscribed thereon.
In the use of a plate to be die stamped it becomes important to separate the plate member from the other elements of the supporting back and stake in order to properly perform the stamping operation, and the structure presented permits the plate member to be entirelydetached and subsequently applied to the supporting back and interlocked with the stake.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved constructionv comprising a stake member and a marking.
plate or tablet provided with means to embrace the upper end of the stake member and for interlocking therewith.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of stake having an interlocking connection at its upper end for the marking plate and also a driving shoulder together with anchoring means adapted to secure the stake in position when driven. y 7
Another object of the invention is to prdvlde a construction embodying a sheet metal marking plate adapted to receive die stamped indicia and supported by a backing member interlocked with an angularly disposed extension from a supporting stake.
Other and further objectsand advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof definedby the appended claims.
In the drawing: 7 e
Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention; i
Figure 2 is a horizontal section through the upper portion of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is. a detail perspective of the stake;
Figure 4 is a central vertical section through Figure 1 Figure 5 is a similaroview of a modified form of the invention; and
Figure 6 is a sectionv on the line 66 of Figure 5.
- driving lug 13 adapted to cooperate'with a suitable driving tool for the purpose of forcing the stake into the earth. This lug may also be utilized-to. carry indicia designating '85 Like referencenumerals designate corre-- the lot or grave number, as shown at 14 in Figure 1. The lower portion of the stake may be provided with outwardly bent spurs or anchors 15 formed from the body thereof and adapted; to be forced inwards in' the driving operation but to exert an outward friction against any effort to withdraw the stake from its driven position.
Cooperating with the head 11 of the stake is the marking plate or tablet 16 whiiclrhas.
, a substantially plane body portion 17 to receive the indicia relating tothe purpose ofthe marker. For instance, when used for grave. designating purposes; a portion of' supporting base for that purpose. The plate 1t} is formed with a depending flange 18 about its edges and: the flange; ad acent the stake is formed with a projecting body; 19
r having bendable-ears 20 adapted to be folded into' engagement with the angular portion 11 of the stake. Such engagement with the wedge shaped portion Would substantially retain. the plate in position but this may be further secured by the use of rivets or bolts 21 passing through the ears 20 and aper tures 22 in the head 11 of thestake.
Cooperating with the nameplate a back plate 23 is provided which is formed with a circumferential up-turned edge 24 passing within the flange 18 from the name plate.v
The lower flange'24' is formed with any aperture 25 adapted to receive the interlocking projection 12 carried by the head ofthe stake.
In assembling the construction shown in Figuresl to 4- the flange 18of the name plate extends over the cooperating flange 24' of the back plateas shown in Figure l and the lower portion of this back plate receives the interlocking extension from the stake. The extension. 19 from. the, name plate is then brought into contact with the wedge shaped head of the stake and theears 20 folded into position beneath. the same so as to embrace and interlock the stake and plate thus permitting the use of an all-metal: name plate of sufficiently. light material to be conveniently die stampedand its application'to the stake after the latter hasv been drivento proper position.
InFigures. 5 and 6 a modified form. of the invention is: shown in-which the. name plate 26 is'mount'ed upon a' stakemember 27'by a slightly different. form of: interlockedconnection. This member 27" 'isformed with the behind. the. entire body of the name." plate which carries the die stamping 30 similar to that shown in Figure 1. The back plate 31 is formed at one end with an inturned flange 32 having a rebent free end 33 apertured to receive the upper end of the interlocking extension 29 from the stake while the opposite endof the back plate is flanged inwardly at 314; and rebent at 35, both of these members being apertured to permit the passage of the stake. extension 29 therethrough. This extension is formed at its lower portion with locking spurs 36' of resilient material preferably formed from the body of the extension and adapted to be compressed when the'extension is inserted between the plates and to laterexpand and lock it in position as shown in Figure 6. The marking plate is provided with a peripheral flangeyone side 37 thereof being extended to partially embrace the flange 32 of the back and form an interlocked connection for the plate 26 and the opposite side flange 38 of this plate is apertured to permit the passage of the ex tension 29 therethrough. By this means the plate ispositively interlocked with the back and bothof these members rigidly supported upon the extension from the stake.
The invention presents a grave marker of durable metallic material in which the inscription is clearly legible under all conditions and practically permanent so asto be conveniently read. The construction bywhich the main plate and stake may be as-' senibled after the driving of the latter provide for-a proper securing. ofth'e stake and also the convenient manipulation of the plate for the production of thedie stamp indicia thereon. This separable construction.
also forms an important factor in the packing, storage and shipping of the article.
While the specific construction ofthe several parts hasbeen shown and described, it
will be obvious that changes and alterationsmay be-made therein without departing-from the spirit of the invention as; defined by the appended claims. i
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-is:
1; In a marker, a stake member provided with a laterally enlarged head having interlocking means, and a marking plate formed with bendablemembers adapted to embrace and interlock with said head.
2. In amarker, a Stake member provided at its upper end with a head and interlocking-projection, a marking-platehaving at its base an extension adapted to enclose said head, and a back plateapertu'red to-receive saidprojection 3. In a marker, a stake member provided at its upper end with a laterally disposed head a marking-platehavingat itsbase an extension adapted to embrace saidhead, and support the plate man-inclined position and a driving lug upon said stake having a horizontal face disposed at the head portion thereof.
. 4. In a marker, 21 stake having an enlarged angularly disposed head portion, a back plate adapted to interlock Withan extension from said portion, and a nameplate mounted upon said back plate and provided With means to embrace said stake head.
5. In a marker, a stake having an enlarged angularly disposed head portion, a loack plate adapted to interlock With an extension from sa1d portion, a name plate mounted upon said back plate and provided With means to embrace said stake head, andsecuring de' 1 vices extending through said embracing means and apertures in the stake head.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
