formed into some plaything when ceasing, V
temporarily or otherwise, to be used for carrying purposes.
Primarily, the object of the invention is to produce an improved device of the class aforesaid embodying the combination of a handbag and-an article of amusement, which can be readily changed one into the other through simple manipulation.
A secondary object is to provide a combination device of the nature mentioned comprising an integral article, such for example as a full-membered doll wearing a garment, partsof which can be folded to form a carrying bag therefor of appropriate configuration.
A third object is the production of a combined article and carrier of the type set forth admitting of joint dilation, whereby an extensible doll, for instance, may be drawn out of a bag and the latter correspondingly ex panded to constitute a suitable dress for the same.
A fourth object is the provision in a combined article and carrier of the character disclosed, of means enabling the doll or other thing to be contracted into a small compass, and the dress or covering thereof gathered over it in folds of proportionate reduction.
A special aim of the invention is to supply a combined carrier and article of-the kind referred to, especially distinguishedby its attractive appearance and. capability of affording wholesome amusement, as well as by the simplicity of its structural organization and moderate cost of production.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will in part be obvious, and in part be more fully brought out in the detailed description hereinafter contained.
The invention consists in the various com; binations or sub combinations of elements, arrangement and interrelative disposition of parts, and peculiar features of construction pertaining re the impress, device, as"
herein described, and defined in the appended claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing hereto annexe-d, wherein Figure I is a full face view of a'dressed doll of the: extensible type, apparently devoid of means for carrying the same, part of the doll and its h-abilimen-t being sectioned to show the interior construction;
Fig. II is a similar view, mostly insection, illustrating the manner in which certain portions of the doll and accoutrement thereof are contracted preparatorily to converting the entire article into a carrier; and.
Fig. III is a perspective View of a handbag produced by a complete inversion of the dolls attire, drawn over the head of the doll so as to conceal it completely.
Correspondingnumerals refer to like parts in the several views.
Briefly outlined, the invention as it exists in the embodiment thereof herein exemplified comprises a doll having a hollow body, with neck, head, face, shoulders, and arms of conventionalforms' and proportions. Flexibly attached to the lower part of the body are nether limbs, which may be either depending therefrom or inserted into its interior, according as towhether the doll is used in full lengthfor play, or else contracted for purposes of transportation. The means of attachment provided for the limbs consist of bloomers or kn-ickerbockers that come down over the knees and hold the pedal appendagesv properly suspended. Surrounding these is an under garment furnished with a drawstring at its'lo-wer edge and arranged to close upon the feet of the doll and their attaching means, when pushed inside the body. The latter'may be clad in any desired style, pursuant to fashion. In accordance with the invention, however, the. skirt of the do-lls dress and its associated parts are adapted for inversion from the perimeter of the closedundergarment and thence reach above the head of the doll, which they com pletely envelop as if it were enclosed in a separate handbag made specially {for this purpose. Drawstrings encased-in'a hem of one of the'main garments are used to close and-hold them over the (101118 head, in their inverted. and folded condition.
,Obviously, the greatestbenefit will be de. rived from the inventi' by using-it its entirety after the rnanner'hereiiiahove as pressed, although it may be noted that an operative device of acceptable design may be produced by employing a less number of parts, with correspondingly diminished advantages. Further, it will be observed. by experts familiar with. inventions of analogous lmport that the combined carrier and article herein disclosed is susceptible of varied modifications having the same end in view. Therefore, let it be understood that the annexed drawing is offered by way of example only, and is not put forth as representing the sole means of reducing the invention to practice.
As illustrated in the said drawing, the combination device constituting the present embodiment of the invention includes an article of amusement, which may be of any desired type and design, but preferably consists of a dressed doll, designated as a whole by the reference letter A, in Figures I and II. This doll has a hollow body or torso 11, associated in any approved manner with a neck 12, and a head 13. The latter may be given an infantile facial expression, and likewise supplied with dressed hair simulat ing that of a child, as indicated at 14c and 15, respectively. However, it will be understood that the invention is not concerned in the matter of physiognomy, and leaves it to the maker or buyer of the doll to determine whether it should symbolize some particular age, race and color, or any human being, or a lower animal instead. If a childish visage is allotted to the doll, as in the example shown, the body 11 thereof naturally will be supplemented on opposite sides with appropriately diminutive arms, as 16, 17 and tiny hands 18, 19.
From the lower portion ofthe dolls body are suspended its nether limbs, preferably by flexible connections, after the manner rcp iesented in Fig. I. As shown, hese limbs need be composed only of a pair of pedal extremities, as 21, 22, depending from tibiae 23, 24:, the upper ends of which are adapted to engage tubular members 25, 26, of some bifurcated vestment, such for instance as bloomers or knickerbockers. The limbs may be covered partly or wholly with fancy hosiery and shoes of the prevailing styles, as suggested at 27 and 28, respectively. The
vestment 25, 26 is made of silk or other suit I able fabric of sufficient firmness and pliability to afford a shapely means of suspension for the limbs, and at the same time enable them to be pushed upwardly for their entire length inside the body 11. This feature of the invention is illustrated in Fig. II, 'where the said limbs appear as having been retracted wholly within the body of the doll,
/ which latter is thereby contracted approxi- .mately one-half'in its, longitudina dimension. The tubular members 25, 26 aytzorementioned may then be converted ino inner shields or recesses for the limbs, in which case they must be turned inside out to regain their former positions. These members can also be pushed back into the hollow portion of the body 11 in a merely folded or collapsed condition.
A closure is provided at the lower end of the hollow body 11, in order to prevent the retracted limbs of the doll from working loose and sliding out of their resting place, with the enveloping bifurcations of the vestment above described. This is conveniently effected with the aid of an under garment 31, which encircles the open portion of the body and hangs loose for a certain distance therefrom, reaching down about midway around and by the sides of the suspending members 25., 26, when outwardly extended, as they are shown in Fig. I. A hem 32 is stitched at the lower edge of the garment, and a case 33 formed therein, through which is passed a draw-string 34-. By pulling the latter, the said lower edge and hemthereof are drawn centrally inward; the cloth composing the under garment is gathered over the pedal extremities 21, 22; and the open end of the body 11 becomes closed, all as indicated in Fig. IT, and also at the bottom of Fig. 111, to which further reference will presently be made. A bow-knot 35 is tied in the drawstring where it emerges from the case 33, after effecting the closure, as indicated in the view last named.
The dolls dress. previously referred to herein, may be indefinitely varied as regards material, cut, shape, style, finish, and ornamentation, according to the wishes and intent of either the vendor or the purchaser, as will be understood. For the purposes of this specification, however, it is suflicient to say that the dress may include a waist 37, covering the body or torso 11, and a skirt 38, extending therefrom down below the before mentioned limbsin their extended position, the skirt being supplemented, if desired, with an inner lining or petticoat 39. Both the, skirt and its lining or petticoat are preferably loose, as represented in Figs. I and TI. They are also of sufficient width and length to admit of being drawn up clear over the head of the doll, in such a way as to enclose the latter completely= Assuming that the doll s limbs have been inserted into the hollowbody and covered up by means of the closure hereinbefore described, the sin tire doll will then be inclosed as within a bag in the manner exemplified in Fig. III.
In order to facilitate the forming of the bag aforesaid, the lining 39, or in the absence thereof the skirt 38, is. provided with cases 4.1 and42,'at the front and back respectively, through which are. threaded draw-strings 43 and 44:- Both the skirt and the lining will be considered as an outer garment in this connection. The ends of the ii t) .iOO
strings may be tied to one another to form bow- knots 45, 46, at the opposite sides of this outer garment, when depending from the doll, as shown in Fig. I. These bowknots need not be undone, but by pulling the same outward, after inversion of the dress over the dolls head, as previously set forth, they will serve to gather it in and close fully the bag formed thereby, as Fig. III indicates. Thus is constituted a convenient and neat-looking handbag, well adapted to cover up a doll or other article which one may prefer to carry about in concealment in order to avoid the gaze of the curious, but yet is instantly available, by transmutation, for use and enjoyment at the appointed time and place.
In its broader aspects, the invention herein disclosed is not limited to the precise features of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, nor to any particular structural make-up or design by which it can be reduced to practice,'as numerous changes may be made in the details without departing from the principles of the invention, or even sacrificing any of its chief advantages.
Having now described my invention, what I I claim as novel therein, and desire particularly to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is
'1. A convertible carrier of the class described comprising a figure having a hollowed body, flexibly suspended limbs adapted for insertion therein, and garment parts arranged to inclose said body together with its said limbs when drawn thereover substantially counterwise.
2. A convertible carrier of the class described comprising a figure hollow at the lower end thereof, nether limbs pertaining to said figure, flexible connections intermediate the former and the latter enabling the body of the figure to receive said limbs through said end, and a garment around said connections foldable over the entered limbs so as to close said body.
8. A convertible carrier of the class deand out of the same, flexible tubular elements affording connections between said limbs and said open end of the body, and garment parts capable of being'drawn over the bodys top and lower end.
5. A convertible carrier of the class described comprising a figure open at the lower end thereof, nether limbs pertaining to the body of said figure positioned substantially centrally with respect to said open end, flexible tubular elements forming connections between said body. and said limbs, said elements being invertible to permit the limbs to be drawn in and out of the body, and means admitting of being pulled over the top ofthe latter and across the lower end thereof so as to enclose the figure in its entirety.
- 6. A convertible carrier of the class described comprising a figure with a body open at its lower end, nether limbs positioned centrally of the latter, tubular connections flexibly suspending said limbs from said open body so as to permit their insertion therein, and-a garment foldable' across said end of the body under the inserted limbs and connections.
7. A convertible carrier of the class described comprising a figure open at one end, nether limbs retractible therein, an under garment foldable transversely of said end beneath the retracted limbs, and a reversible outer garment capable of being folded from said under garment upwardly over theother end of said figure.
