UNITED STATES PATENT Grrron.
CYRUS A. WERDEN, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM B. WERDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,560, dated December 8, 1874; application filed October 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRUs A. WERDEN, of Waukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Window-Screen; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construc tion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a front view, part sectional, of my windowscreen, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. i
This invention has relation to window-frames which are adaptedto be snugly applied to frames of various sizes, for the purpose of excluding flies, mosquitoes, and other insects; and the nature of the invention consists in combining with the screen-frame a detacha ble block, fitting into a groove of corresponding size in the vertical edge of the said frame, and acted upon by springs, whereby the said block will be compelled to occupy and fill up the difference in width of a window and screen frame. as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, a to designate the vertical. and a/ a the horizontal, bars of the frame of a window-screen, A. This screen may be of mosquito-net or of wire-cloth, and is removably attached to the screen by means of vertical grooves b at each side of the frame, into which are fitted corresponding strips 1), as shown in Fig. 2. By removing these strips the net may be detached from the frame, for the purpose of repairing or renewing it, when worn out. Along one or both of the vertical edges to aof this frame a deep rectangular groove, B, is cut, extending from the top to the bottom thereof, into which is fitted a detachable block, 0, of corresponding thickness, between which and. the bottom of the groove helical or other suitable springs, s, are applied in any convenient number and manner. The block 0 is held and guided in the groove B by means of metallic strips 0, which are rigidly secured to the upper and lower edges of the said block, and are received into grooves z" in the upper and lower edges of the screen-frame. They are confined therein and prevented from casual detachment by means of a rod, (1, and their upturned ends 0, as shown in Fig. 1.
I apply my adjustable screen in thefollowin g manner, to wit: The lower sash is run up a sufficient distance to allow of the introduction of the screen frame in its place. The block 0 is then inserted between the guide-strips of the said sash, when, by cmnpressing the springs, the screen-frame is allowed to enter the window-frame, the recoil of the said springs forcing the other side of the frame into the space between the corresponding guide-strips upon the other side of the window-frame, securely holding it in place, and filling up all interstices.
I am aware that an adjustable block operated by a spring has heretofore been employed in connection with a wimlow-frame, and, therefore, I make no broad claim to such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The Window-screen A, provided with a longitudinal recess, B, end grooves i i, and rods (1 d, in combination with the detachable block 0, provided with metal strips 0, having their ends 0 upturned, and springs S S, constructed substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed myname in the presence of two witnesses.
CYRUS A. WERDEN.
