Description
E. F. EDWARDS. 7 Machines for Setting Thimble-Skein s.
Patented Nov. 24,1874.
WITNEESEE INVENT'DF Md W f v UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD F. EDWARDS, OF PLAINWELL, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SETTING THlMBLE-SKEINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,094, dated November 24, 1874; application filed July 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. EDWARDS, of Plainwell, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Setting Thimble-Skeins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in thimble-skein setters; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of devices which will be more fully described hereafter, whereby a cheap and effective machine is produced.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a 0 represent two fiat circular plates, of any desired size, which are rigidly bound together by the bolts or rods d. Through the plate 0 is made a circular opening, in which is swiveled the ring 0, which has a screw-thread, g, formed upon its periphery, and an opening,
11., through it, of a shape corresponding to'the upon the ring 6 engages, so as to move the bar back and forth as the two plates carrying the bar are revolved around the ring and axle. Olamped to the bar at at any desired point, by means of the set-screw 1, is the slide 2, in which is placed the cutting-tool 3, for cutting the arm upon the axle, the tool being made adjustable, so as to cut difl'erentsized skeins.
In order to adjust the taper of the arm the opening 4 in the plate a is made elongated, and secured to the outer side of the plate is a small adjustable slotted plate, 5, through which the bar n passes. By means of the slotted plate and elongated opening the bar can be set to any taper desired. Projecting up through the plate 0 and bearing against the bar it is a set-screw, 6, by means of which the bar can be held in gear with the ring or loosened so that it can be moved freely back by hand. Passing through the plate a is a screw, 9, which both centers the axle and acts as a vise, in conjunction with the set-screws in the ears i, to hold it rigidly in position.
I am aware that a revolving 'frame similar to the one here shown, which passes over the end of the axle, and which is provided with a screw-rod for opera-ting the cutting-device, is not new; but in this case the screw'rod extends beyond the end of the frame, so as to require a separate support, and causes the power for revolv'ing the frame to be applied through the medium of a separate mechanism. I am also aware that a machine to be operated by hand, and which is provided with two gear- -wheels for operating a screw-rod, which rod carries the cutting-tool, is not new, as may be seen in Patents N 0. 129,486 and 137,316, and these I disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of plates a c, rods d, screwring 0, provided with the lugs t and screws l, with rock-bar n, carrying a cutting device, and screw 6, substantially as shown and described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of July, 1874. EDWARD F. EDWARDS. Witnesses:
JAMES RoUsE, WILLIAM COX.
