PATIENT; osrrca; I
GARFIELD A. GARRETT, OF DORRANCE, KANSAS.
END GATE.
Application filed March 25, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARFIELD A. GARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorrance, in the county of Russell and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to end gates for wagons in which the end gate is hinged to one side of the wagon body one end, and is provided with a fastening latch at the other side of the wagon body; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed whereby the end gate is locked to the wagon body when closed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a wagon body provided with an end gate and a locking device according to this invention. Fi 2 is a lan view of the locking device, drawn to a larger scale, and in section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the locking device, showing the tongue in section on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
The wagon body has a bottom 5, sides 6, and an upright 7 at one end adjacent to one side. The end gate 13 is hinged to the other side of the wagon body from the up right 7 by hinges 4, and is arranged flush with the upright 7 when closed.
A plate 8 is secured in a horizontal groove in the upright 7, and has a rearwardly projecting lug 9 at one end. A pin 10 is secured in this lug and is arranged parallel to the plate 8. An operating lever 12 is pivoted by a pin 14 to the lower part of the upright, and extends vertically crosswise of the plate 8, and has a handle 15 at its upper A. latch 16 is secured to the middle part of the lever, preferably by a pivot 17, and has a log 18 at one end which projects rearwardly and is provided with a hole 19 which is slidable over the pin 10.
The end gate is provided with a handle plate 20 which projects under the free end portion of the latch 16, and forms a stop with which it interlocks when the end gate is closed. The latch is normally held in engagement with its stop by means of a helical Serial No. 18,142.
A guide for the latch is secured to the upright 7, and is formed of a block 24 having lugs 25 at its ends which straddle the latch, and a staple 26. The staple 26 extends over the latch and the lugs 25, which have notches 27 to receive it, and is passed through holes in the upright 7 and is secured by nuts 28. This guide retains the latch in position, and permits it to slide horizontally with facility.
The end gate is unlatched by moving the operating lever so as to withdraw the latch from its stop against the pressure of the helical spring 21, and then can be turned horizontally on its hinges and opened.
What I claim is: I
1. A wagon body provided with an upright at one side, an end gate hinged to the other side of the wagon body, a plate secured to the said upright and provided with a lug at one end and having a pin which projects from the said lug and is arranged parallel to the said plate, an operating lever having one end portion pivoted to the u right and projecting crosswise of the said plate, a latch carried by the said lever and having a perforated lug which is slidable over the said pin, and a spring encircling the said pin and arranged between the lugs of the said plate and latch and operating to hold the latch projected so as to engage with the end gate.
2. A wagon body having an upright at one side, an end gate hinged to the other side of the wagon body and provided with a latch stop at its free end, a plate secured to the said upright and provided with a rearwardly projecting lug and a pin which projects from the lug parallel to the said plate, an operating lever pivoted at its lower part to the said upright and projecting upwardly crosswise of the said plate, a latch carried by the said lever and having a perforated lug which is slidable over the said pin, and a spring arranged around the said pin between the lugs on the said plate and latch and operating to hold the latch on the latch and have notches in their tops, and a said stop when the end gate is closed. staple which engages with the said notches 3. The combination, with a wagon body and straddles the said block and secures it 1 end gate and locking latch as set forth in t0 the said plate on the upright. 5 claim 1, of a guide for the latch secured to In testimony whereof I have afiixed my the said upright and comprising a block signature. provided with flanges which straddle the GARFIELD A. GARRETT.
