PUSH BROOM.
Application filed April 30, 1925.
T0 f/ZZ 107mm t may concern.'
Be it known that l, ALBERT A. CALLAIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at lzjlaquemine, in the parish of Iberville and State of Louisiana. have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Push lrooms: and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in push brooms of the type used on dry floors and having' a horizontallv elona'ated rigid back from which an inclined handle projects. Brooms of this character commonly have the mass of bristles of uniform quality throufrhout,r soft hair being; usually employed. llt is well known however that as this hair must carry the entire weight of the broom back, it very soonbecomes seriouslv distorted so that clean sweeping' with the broom is impossible and it must be discarded. lt is the object of my invention to malte simple and inexpensive provision for carrying); the weight of the broom back, this weifrht-carryina means being' adapted to slide along' a floor being swept. By thus supporting the weicht of the back, independently of the soft sweeping bristles, the effective life of the broom is greatly increased and moreover', it will at all times retain its proper shape.
With the foregoing' in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being' supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is a perspective view of a push broom constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view.
In the drawing' above briefly described, the numeral l designates a rigid, horizontally elongated back which is preferably formed of wood. Projecting upwardly from the intermediate portion of this back, is the usual inclined handle 2.
Serial No. 26,990.
il compact mass 3 of soft bristles, preferably haii', projects downwardly from the back l and is secured thereto in any well lrnown manner, the mass 3 having two continuous-walled recesses l from the aforesaid baclr to the lower surface of the mass.
These recesses It are near the ends of the mass 3 but are spaced inwardly from the sides and ends of the latte vStiff fillings 5, of bristles, are located within the recesses 4 and are secured to the back 1 in any desired manner, said fillings terminating in a plane above the lower surface of the mass 3. These stiff fillings 5 are adapted to slide along' a floor being` swept, and they carry the entire weight of the back l. Thus, the soft bristles 3 are relieved of such weight, with the result that they will not be distorted. Consequently, the life of the broom is greatly increased and at no time during such life, will it lose its proper shape and effectiveness.
Excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed and they are therefore preferably followed. However, within the cope of the .invention as claimed, slight modifications may be made.
l claim:
ln a push broom having a horizontally elongated rigid back and an inclined handle extending from the central portion of said baclr; a compact mass of soft bristles projecting downwardly from said back and l aving two continuous-walled recesses from said back to the lower surface of the mass, said recesses being; near the ends of said mass but spaced inwardly from the sides and ends of such mass, and stift| members in said recesses secured to the broom back and terminating in a plane spaced above the lower surface of said mass of soft bristles, said stiff members being' adapted to slide along a licor being; swept to carry the weight of the aforesaid back thereby relieving the soft bristles of such weight and prevent-ing distortion of said soft bristles.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
ALBERT A. CALLAIS.
