BUOYANT CHAIR.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, ANToNINo Assnnzro, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buoyant Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my present invention is the provision of a buoyant chair adapted to comfortably support a person in the water in such manner that the person is enabled with the assistance of a paddle to conveniently move himself about in the water.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a buoyant chair susceptible of being reduced to a package of small compass so as to be conveniently carried as baggage.

Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

Figure 1 is a view showing the preferred embodiment of my invention in use.

Figure 2 is a view showing the improvement as reduced to a compact passage.

Figure 3 is a perspective showing the improved chair per se in readiness for use.

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section of the chair bottom, taken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 3.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.

Among other elements my novel chair comprises a foldable bottom 1. The said bottom 1 is made up of spaced sections 2 of light wood or other appropriate material and a flexible covering 3, preferably of textile material, the opposite layers of the said covering 3 being stitched or otherwise connected together at 4 in the spaces between the sections 2. Constructed as described the bottom 1 is manifestly adapted to be folded or rolled into a small package.

In addition to the bottom 1 the chair comprises stirrups 5 on pendent straps 6, connected at 7 to the forward portion of the bottom 1.

The bottom 1 in accordance with my invention is suspended 'from an inflated tube 8 of general U-shape in plan, the said tube 8 in addition to rendering the chair buoyant being adapted to afiord a back and arms for the chair as Will be readily understood from Figure 3. The said tube 8 is provided at 9 with a nonsreturn inflating valve, and when deemed expedient an air pump 10 may be connected with the said valve tube 9. The pump 10 is detachably connected and there fore when desired the chair may be, when disassociated from the pump 10, as appears in Figure 1.

Straps 11 are utilized to suspend the bottom 1 from the tube 8. The said straps 11 receive the tube 8 and are held thereon by keeper strips 12; and it .will also be noted that in the preferred embodiment of my invention the straps 11 are provided with snap hooks 13 for cooperation with eyes 14 on the bottom 1 and thereby coupling the inflated tube 8 to the said bottom 1.

The straps 11 are preferably varied in length as illustrated so that the rear portion of the chair bottom 1 will be disposed in a horizontal plane below that of the forward portion thereof, this being desirable because it conduces to the comfort of the person occupying the chair and lessens the liability of the chair turning over.

Manifestly when a person is seated in the chair, and the chair is disposed in the water, a person may conveniently maintain him self in the chair, and with his feet in the stirrups 5 can move with facility through the water, the feet being moved for such purpose when desired. It will also be understood from Figure 1 that the occupant of the chair is positioned so as to conveniently wield a paddle designated by 15. The said paddle 15 may be and preferably is formed of two detachably connected sections 15*.

When it is desired to pack the chair for convenient transportation thereof, the tube 8 is deflated, and the straps 11 are disconnected from the bottom 1 after which the chair is rolled or folded into a compact package such as designated by 16 in Figure 2, encircling straps 17 being preferably employed to retain the chair in the package stated.

Notwithstanding the practical advantages ascribed to my novel chair, it will be appreciated that the chair is simple and inexpensive in construction, and is susceptible of being readily prepared for use, and is adapted when used to afford a considerable amount of pleasure to adults and children pleasuring in the water.

' I have specifically described the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the disclosed structure, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which structural changes may be made without departure from my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. In a buoyant chair, a U-shaped buoyant member, a bottom spaced below and suspended from said buoyant member, and means extending downwardly from the forward portion of the bottom and adapted for the engagement of the feet of the user.

2. In a buoyant chair, a U-shaped inflatable member, in combination with'a bottom spaced below and suspended from said inflated member, and stirrups suspended from the forward portion of the bottom.

3. In a buoyant chair, a U-shaped inflatable member, in combination with a bottom spaced below and suspended from said inflated member, and stirrups suspended from the forward portion of the bottom; the said bottom being foldable, and flexible suspen sion being interposed between the inflated member and the bottom and detachably connected to the latter.

4-. A buoyant chair comprising a U-shaped inflated member adapted to form a chair back and arms, and having means for facilitating-its inflation and deflation, straps retained about the inflated member and having pendent portions, and a bottom connected to said pendent portions of the straps; the said bottom being foldable and being detachably connected with the pendent portions or the straps and being equipped on its forward portion with stirrups-straps and stirrups, and the whole being adapted to be reduced to a package of small compass.
