vcitizen of the United States, residingy at Hatfield, in the/"county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented newv and useful Improvements in AuxiliaryAir- Supply Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to auxiliary air inlet devices especially adapted for use on internal combustion engines.
Briey stated, an important object of 'this invention is to provide an auxiliary air inlet device consisting of a pair of spaced screens between `which the auxiliary air supply is admitted in suoli a manner that the same is thoroughly mixed with 'the fuel charge from the carbureter.
A further and equally important aim of the invention is to provide an auxiliary air inlet device having simple means whereby the auxiliary air supply may be controlled and cut off if desired.
Also an important aim is to provide an auxiliary air inlet device which is of highly simplified construction, simple to apply, and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate Vlike parts throughout the same,

1n the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown al preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a body of fibre or other slightly comressible material adapted to be arranged etween the fianges of an intake manifold 8 and a carbureter 9. Particular attention is directed to the fact that the fibrous body 5 does not require separate gaskets between itself and the flanges of the manifold and the carbureter.` This is so because the fibrous body can compress slightly to bring about a fluid tight connection. As illustrated in Fig. 2 the fibrous body is provided witha centrally arranged opening, the opposite ends of which are provided with screen cloth 6. The edges of; the screencloth are extended inwardly andfare cemented brotherwisefi-rmly secured" to the'iwa'lli'of dpening infthe bdy andg `this provides a "cirrn paratively smooth exterior btl-i' sides of the fibrous hdy.` The 1fuel mixture in passing through the first screen it encounters will be finely `broken up and mixed with a quantity of air which is admitted to the opening in the fibrous body by an air inlet member 10. The air admitted by way of the inlet member 10 readily mixes with the finely mixed and divided fuel charge and the resulting mixture is passed through the second screen and is finely vaporized so that a highly combustible mixture is produced. The presence of the spaced reticulated members 6 in the path of travel of the fuel charge arre'sts the progress of the heavier and more or less unvaporized fuel so that this is mixed with the air entering from the conduit 10 and thus a 'substantial saving in liquid fuel is brought about.
The air admitted by way of the inlet member 10 contacts with a concavo-convex spray head and valve 14 having a stem 16 movable through the member 10. When the auxiliary air supply contacts with the 'more or less mushroom shaped head 14 it is deflected and spread over -a comparatively wide area. to mix with the liquid fuel laden air. The head 14 may be engaged by an adjusting screw 18 threaded through the brous body and having a head 20. By the adjustment of they screw bolt 18 the position of the head 14 may be varied and if desired the head may be moved to closed position to cut off the supply of auxiliary air.
Fig. 3 illustrates that the air inlet tube 10 extends above the bottom wall of the opening in the fibrous body 5 and, |therefore, prevents the escape of anyliquid fuel which may settle in themanifold as a result of an over-rich mixture or the choking of the engine.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. An auxiliary air sup ly device comprising a slightly compresslble fibrous body having an opening, reticulated members Aarranged at opposite ends of said opening and secured to the walls of the same, an air inlet tube extending into said openlng and terminating above the bottom wall of the same, a combined valve and spray head of concavo-oonvex formation arranged at the outlet' end of said tube and adapted to spread the auxiliary air supply, and a screw bolt threaded through said fibrous body and adapted to engage 'said head to limit the opening of the same or kholdthe same in closed position.
2. .An auxiliary air supply device oomprising a slightly oompressible fibrous body having an opening, reticulated. members arranged at opposite ends of said opening and secured to the walls of the same, an air inlet tube extending into said opening and terminating above the bottom Wall 0f the same, a combined valve and 'spray head of eoneavo-convex formation arranged at the outlet end of said tube Aand adapted to spread the auxiliary air supply, and a Screw bolt threaded through said librous body and adapted to engage said head to limit the opening of the same or hold the same in closed position, said tube and said head being arranged between said retioulated members.
