MULTIJ'ET CONDENSER.

To all whom, it may concern.
.Be it known that I, PAUL A. BANcnn', a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nutley, county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Multijet Condenser, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
ihis invention relates to low level multijet condensers, and one object of the inven-- tion is to enable air and gases to be convcniently withdrawn 'from the condenser especially in the case of excessive air leak age, thus avoiding the necessity of using larger amounts of water.
Another object of the invention is to permit the withdrawing of air and gases from the condenser while at the same time protecting the vacuum pump and preventing water and steam from entering theair withdrawal chamber and passing to the vacuum pump.
Further objects of the invent-ion will here? inafter appear, and the invention is shown in its preferred 'forms in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a condenser embodying the invena tion, and

' Referring to the drawings, thecondenser casing comprises the lower section or body A and'the upper section or head B suitably secured together. Within the head is provided a nozzle plate C having a plurality of nozzles D adapted to emit co nvergent jets or streams of water directed to the discharge opening E of the casing in the usual manner. The nozzle plate C is carried in a -watcr head F and water enters at the inlet G.-

"In the form of the invention shown, the convergent jetsof water are unprotected, so that the steam enters the-condenser from above and passes into direct and immediate contact with the jets, without the interposi-- tion of a combining tube. vanes or other apron and the walls of the condenser casing. This air chamber is located wholly above the discharge opening into the diffuser. The walls of the apron X preferably diverge or flare away from the discharge opening E and apertures or. spaces Z are provided at the lower portion of the apron, adjacent ,the discharge opening, for the passage of air and gases into the air chamber Y. Means are provided for withdrawing air from the chamber Y and as shown, a withdrawal pipe at is connected to the casingand communicates with the aperture 6 leading tothe air chamber. Any suitable form of pump, as a vacuum pump (not shown) withdraws air from the chamber.
The apron X prevents water and steam from passing into the air chamber and from thence into the pump, but air and gases may enter the air chamber through the apertures or openings Z in the lower portion of the apron and be withdrawn by the air pump through the aperture 6.
In the modification shown in Figure 2, the apron 0 is of substantially the'same type as'that indicated in Figure 1, except that the perforations d extend in several rows I claim: In a low level multi-jet condenser, the combination of a condenser casing, a nozzle plate having nozzles mounted thereon adapted to emit a plurality of unprotected convergent streams of water through the cham- 5 and a tail piece on the diffuser extending into the tank, an inlet to said chamber for the introduction of steam, a perforated protective apron in the lower portion of the chamber around 7 the discharge opening 10 forming an air chamber between the apron and-the Walls of the condenser casing, said apron being supported from the condenser casing independently from the 'mountlng tor the said nozzles, said air chamber being located Who-11y above the discharge opening into the difiuser, and means for withdrawing leakage air and gases from said air chamber beneath said apron.
