DOOR-LOCK-MORTISE MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lViLLrs J. BELLOWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Longview, in the county of Cowlitz and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Door-Lock-Mortise Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a portable mortising machine, and aims to provide ma chine of a novel construction which may be readily and easily secured to a door or the like in a manner to insure against movement thereof while the machine is in operation.
Another important object of the inven tion is to provide means whereby the cutting tool may be automatically fed to its work.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for cutting the walls of the mortise evenly insuring against rough edges being formed by the cutting blades.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a portable mortising machine constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View thereof.

Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on line 55 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of the machine.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the support or body portion of the device, which includes spaced side members 6 connected at their forward ends, the space between the members 6 being such as to permit the device to be readily and easily positioned over the edge of a door or the like, in a mannor as clearly illustrated by Figure 4 of the drawings.
The body portion is formed with guides 7 through which the rods 8'move, the rods 8 being carried by the gear supporting mem ber to he hereinafter more fully described.
Guides 9 are also provided on the body portion and accommodate the feed screws 10 which have their threaded extremities 11 moving through the nuts 12 secured to the body portion at 13. Thus it will be seen that as the feed screws 10 are rotated, the gear support will be moved towards the body portion.
Setscrews indicated at 14 extend through the members 6 of the body portion and are designed to engage the door under operation to clamp the body portion thereto so that movement of the machine, while in operation will be absolutely prevented.
The gear support is indicated generally by the reference character 15 and includes a circular member 16 having one surface thereof cut away to provide a clearance for the gears 17 that are mounted on the forward ends of the bits 18 to rotate them. The main or operating gear 19 is also supported in this space, and is mounted on he shaft 20 positioned in suitable openings in the gear support, so that rotary movement of the gear 19 will result in relative movements of the gears 17 to rotate the bits 18.
The gear 21 is mounted on the shaft 20 and is engaged by the ring gear 22 that is mounted on the stub shaft 23 extending outwardly from the disk 24 that acts as a cover for the gear casing. This disk 24 is secured into position by means of the screws 25 that are shown as passing through the circular member 16.
Mounted on the feed screws 10 are gears 26 that are also in mesh with the ring gear 22 so that upon rotation of the ring gear, to operate the bits 18, the feed screws will be simultaneously operated to feed the gear support and bits carried thereby to their work.
As clearly shown by Figures 4; and 5 of the drawings, the bits 18 are mounted in the elongated casings 27 that have their forward ends tapered as at 28 to provide cutting edges for trimming the edges of the openings formed by the bits 18 to square the opening. The casing 27 is formed with a head 28 that is fitted in a suitable cut out portion formed in the gear support 16.
In order that the ring gear may be conveniently operated a handle 29 is mounted on the stub shaft 23, the handle being also secured to the ring gear at 30 so that as the handle is rotated, the ring gear will be rotated to impart rotary movement to the gears meshing therewith.
It might be further stated that openings 81 are formed in the bit casings 27 so that material dislodged by the bits may be fed from the casings through the openings so that rotary movement of the bits will not be retarded In the operation of the device, the body portion is clamped to the edge of a door or article to be mortised, and the bits positioned on the edge of the door. The handle 29 is now rotated, causing rotary movement of the bits 18 and feed screws 10, the bits cutting the mortise, while the feed screws act to move the gear support towards the door, to the end that the bits are moved for- \vardly within the door. It is obvious that when the mortise has been properly out, the ring gear is reversed, to the end that the bits are backed off, and the body portion may be removed from the door.
I claim Ina mortising machine, a body portion, guides carried by the body portion, a gear casing, guide rods carried by the gear casing and adapted to move through the guides, feed screws carried by the gear casing, nuts on the body portion through which the feed screws are moved, bits carried by the gear casing, and means for rotating the bits and feed screws simultaneously.
