Be it known that I, GEORGE N. Cave- Nanci-r, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Faribault, in the'county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to malre and use the same I My invention relates to water filters for cisterns, and moreparticularly to such filters adapted to be interposed in a conductor pipe leading; from aroof to a cistern, and has for its object to improve the same in the several particulars hereinafter noted.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indi cate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
1 is a view principally in taken on the line 1--1 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a view principally in taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 3 indicates a casing having a filtering compartment 4, av clear water compartment 5, and an overflow compartment 6. The filtering compartment 4 is at the bottom of the casing 3. the clear water compartment 5 is at the front of said casing, and the overflow compartment 6 is at the back thereof. Said clear water compartment 5 and overflowcompartment 6 are located above the filtering compartment 4t.
The improved filter, as shown, is inter posed between the upper and lower sections 7 and 8, respectively, of a conductor pipe which may be assumed to lead from one of the gutters of a building to a cistern, not shown. The lower end portion of the upper pipe section 7 extends from the top of the casing 3 completely through the overflow compartment 6, at the center thereof, and is arranged toempty into the filtering compartment 4. The pipe section 8 leads from the filtering compartment 4, and its upper end is closed and is located within said compartment materially above the bottom thereof. I

The partition between the clear water compartment 5 and overflow compartment 6 terminates below the top of the casing 3 and when the water in said clear water compartment rises to the top of said partition,
it will spill thereover into the overflow compartment 6 and from there it will be conveyed to the lower pipe section 8 through a pair of inclined pipes 12 that extend through the filtering compartment l. The receiving end of the'pipes 12 open through the bottom of the overflow compartment l, and the delivery ends thereof extend into the upper end of the lower pipe section 8, close to the closed top thereof.
In the top of the casing 3, forward of the upper pipe section 7, is an opening normally closed by a hin ed cover 13 and which opening affords acbess to the interior of the clear water compartment 5 and the overflow compartment 6. In the bottom of the filtering compartment 4 is a screw cap equipped clean-out opening 14. Water, in flowing through the pipe section 7, will be precipitated into the filtering compartment 4 and the heavy particles of dirt therein will settle on the bottom of the filtering compartment 4. All other dirt remaining in the water will be removed therefrom by the filter as'the water passes upward therethroug'h from the filtering compartment lto the clear water compartment 5 in seeking its the dirt removed therefrom by the filter, is
precipitated onto the bottom of the filtering compartment 4, thus keeping the filter clean. The accumulated dirt e in the filtering compartment 4 may be removed .from time to time by removing the screw cap from the clean-out opening 14 and allow the body of water held in the compartments 4%, 5 and 6 and pipe section 7 to flow therefrom and thereby flush the filtering compartment 4.; r i
The arrangement of the compartments 4, 5 and 6 and pipe sections 7 and '8 is such as to cause aneasy flow of the water: during thefiltering action, and at the same time produces a structure that is very compact so that all parts are accessible and easily cleaned. The screen 10 and cloth 1]. may also be removed through the coverequipped opening in a the casing 3, and cleaned. The arrangement of said compartments and pipe sections is also such that the water in passing from the filtering compart-' ment 4 to the clear water compartment 5 has a direct flow, and the water in the overflow compartment 6 has a direct flow into the lower pipe section 8 through the pipes 12.
The above described filter has been put into commercial use and found highly efficient for the purpose had in view.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with upper and lower water conducting pipe sections, of a casing interposed between said pipe sections, said casing having a filtering compartment, a clear water compartment and an overflow compartment, said clear water and overflow compartments being above the filtering compartment, a filter between the filtering compartment and clear water compartment,
and a partition separating the clear water Lia racer? compartment from the overflow compartment and terminating below the top of the casing to permit the water in the clear water compartment to spill into the overflow compartment, said upper pipe section being arranged to discharge into the filter ing compartment, said lower pipe section becasing having a filtering compartment, 21
clear water compartment and an overflow. compartment, said clear water and overflow compartments being above the filtering compartment, a filter between the filtering compartment.and clear water compartment,
a partition separating the clear water compartment from the overflow compartment and terminating below the top of the casing to permit the water in the clear-water com f partment to spill ino the overflow compartment, said upper pipe section extending through the overflow compartment and arranged to discharge into the filtering compartment, the upper end portion of the lower pipe section being within the filter- V-ing compartment and terminating above the bottom thereof, and a pipe leading from the bottom of the overflow compartment and opening into the lower pipe section within the filtering compartment 3. The structure defined in claim 2 in which the casing is provided with a coverequipped opening affording access to the clear water and overflow compartments, and a clean-out opening in the filtering compart ment.
